Chapter 20

Oh but it feels like years ago now!  That endless day when all things narrowed down to a point.  A point so finite it could have burst the bubble I was living in.

It’s been just over 18 months give or take.

There were trails and publicity.  I had to do my own version of, ‘the whole truth and nothing but’, I knew in the end they would see what had
really
happened.

I also knew that the ‘top ten’ past, present or ‘ever fucking future’ would want things to dry up and go away fairly bloody quickly.  I was quite prepared to blab if I had to about the limo date I had seen one to them have if it would save my friends.

Out of the people in the lot that day there was Casey, the ‘She-man’ of the Chain guardians, and Heidi who did some jail time.  Heidi’s second trail, for the shooting of Sarah Steiger earned her an involuntary manslaughter stint.  She did three months, they offset what she did against the fact the rest of us would have been dog meat had Sarah got back off the ground.

I think she liked it.  Gave her time to get a better agent and sort out the interview slots she was booked for.  She’s been busy ever since.  Last word via email was that she had been approached by a producer for the rights to her story so they could make a movie out of it.  I don’t think she’s ever been happier.  Heidi and Sky both.  I miss them fiercely, but they chose to stay in LA.  Can’t blame them.  They dig the lifestyle and beaches, its in their veins.  You know what’s in my veins?  Ice-cream.  With chocolate sauce on top.

I learned what they had done to her breasts.  I wonder if that wouldn’t make me a touch crazy.  Then I remind myself she was a fucking self-obsessed loon already.  Cutting her nipples off just gave her the excuse to go off on one that would have ended in us all being dead.

I like Heidi, in the end we did some soul searching and between us sorted out how she was going to defend herself.  She never said she was blameless and to her credit, she knew I respected her for that.  Sometimes a bad deed is done, it can’t be changed or undone,
but you can atone for it!

I atone for a lot myself these days.  I think of all the women I saw.  All the tattoos.  The sneers.  I bet laser removal was raking it in for a while there in LA.  Someone on the inside blabbed what they were for.  I’ve never had one.  In the end I got more than a tattoo.

I got her.

My angel.

She sits out on the deck sometimes and just watches the sky shift and change.  Colours the likes of which she has never seen before.  The gulls soar and scream around her and she smiles.  It’s all new to her.  From the rain in the mornings sometimes to the tones of grey in the sky that warn of impending hailstones.

She isn’t well enough to work yet.  Its been hard for her, but I will stay by her side, the life she has now she gifts me with.  I didn’t stay away,
as I said I would!

I never understood as much as she did you see.  I just had the blood yammering rage that made me no different than Denise.  I could so easily have ended that day in a box.  Rosh too.

We belong here now.  Light years from LA.  When I asked Rochelle where she wanted to go I told her I would take her anywhere,
anywhere
she wanted.

When she said she wanted to live in the cheesiest tourist trap we had in Blighty I knew just the place.

We’re happy people.

And at night when the lights of the tower are lit I walk with her along the promenade, she tells me I’m a ‘fucking idiot’, that ‘its freezing’.

But she’s always smiling when she says it.
