Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Truly I tell you, it will be hard for a rich person to enter the kingdom of heaven.

Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.”

When the disciples heard this, they were greatly astounded and said, “Then who can be saved?”
²⁶
But Jesus looked at them and said, “For mortals it is impossible, but for God all things are possible.”

Then Peter said in reply, “Look, we have left everything and followed you. What then will we have?”
²⁸
Jesus said to them, “Truly I tell you, at the renewal of all things, when the Son of Man is seated on the throne of his glory, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
²⁹
And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or fields, for my name’s sake, will receive a hundredfold,

and will inherit eternal life.
³⁰
But many who are first will be last, and the last will be first.

“For the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire laborers for his vineyard.

After agreeing with the laborers for the usual daily wage,

he sent them into his vineyard.

When he went out about nine o’clock, he saw others standing idle in the marketplace;

and he said to them, ‘You also go into the vineyard, and I will pay you whatever is right.’ So they went.

When he went out again about noon and about three o’clock, he did the same.
⁶
And about five o’clock he went out and found others standing around; and he said to them, ‘Why are you standing here idle all day?’
⁷
They said to him, ‘Because no one has hired us.’ He said to them, ‘You also go into the vineyard.’
⁸
When evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his manager, ‘Call the laborers and give them their pay, beginning with the last and then going to the first.’

When those hired about five o’clock came, each of them received the usual daily wage.

Now when the first came, they thought they would receive more; but each of them also received the usual daily wage.

And when they received it, they grumbled against the landowner,

saying, ‘These last worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the day and the scorching heat.’

But he replied to one of them, ‘Friend, I am doing you no wrong; did you not agree with me for the usual daily wage?

Take what belongs to you and go; I choose to give to this last the same as I give to you.

Am I not allowed to do what I choose with what belongs to me? Or are you envious because I am generous?’

So the last will be first, and the first will be last.”

While Jesus was going up to Jerusalem, he took the twelve disciples aside by themselves, and said to them on the way,

“See, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be handed over to the chief priests and scribes, and they will condemn him to death;
¹⁹
then they will hand him over to the Gentiles to be mocked and flogged and crucified; and on the third day he will be raised.”

Then the mother of the sons of Zebedee came to him with her sons, and kneeling before him, she asked a favor of him.
²¹
And he said to her, “What do you want?” She said to him, “Declare that these two sons of mine will sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your kingdom.”

But Jesus answered, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I am about to drink?”

They said to him, “We are able.”

He said to them, “You will indeed drink my cup, but to sit at my right hand and at my left, this is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared by my Father.”

When the ten heard it, they were angry with the two brothers.

But Jesus called them to him and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones are tyrants over them.
²⁶
It will not be so among you; but whoever wishes to be great among you must be your servant,
²⁷
and whoever wishes to be first among you must be your slave;
²⁸
just as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many.”

As they were leaving Jericho, a large crowd followed him.
³⁰
There were two blind men sitting by the roadside. When they heard that Jesus was passing by, they shouted, “Lord,

have mercy on us, Son of David!”

The crowd sternly ordered them to be quiet; but they shouted even more loudly, “Have mercy on us, Lord, Son of David!”

Jesus stood still and called them, saying, “What do you want me to do for you?”
³³
They said to him, “Lord, let our eyes be opened.”
³⁴
Moved with compassion, Jesus touched their eyes. Immediately they regained their sight and followed him.

When they had come near Jerusalem and had reached Bethphage, at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples,

saying to them, “Go into the village ahead of you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her; untie them and bring them to me.
³
If anyone says anything to you, just say this, ‘The Lord needs them.’ And he will send them immediately.

This took place to fulfill what had been spoken through the prophet, saying,

“Tell the daughter of Zion,
       Look, your king is coming to you,
           humble, and mounted on a donkey,
               and on a colt, the foal of a donkey.”

The disciples went and did as Jesus had directed them;
⁷
they brought the donkey and the colt, and put their cloaks on them, and he sat on them.

A very large crowd

spread their cloaks on the road, and others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road.
⁹
The crowds that went ahead of him and that followed were shouting,

       “Hosanna to the Son of David!
           Blessed is the one who comes in the
              name of the Lord!
       Hosanna in the highest heaven!”

When he entered Jerusalem, the whole city was in turmoil, asking, “Who is this?”
¹¹
The crowds were saying, “This is the prophet Jesus from Nazareth in Galilee.”

Then Jesus entered the temple

and drove out all who were selling and buying in the temple, and he overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those who sold doves.

He said to them, “It is written,

    ‘My house shall be called a house of
              prayer’;
           but you are making it a den of
              robbers.”

The blind and the lame came to him in the temple, and he cured them.
¹⁵
But when the chief priests and the scribes saw the amazing things that he did, and heard

the children crying out in the temple, “Hosanna to the Son of David,” they became angry
¹⁶
and said to him, “Do you hear what these are saying?” Jesus said to them, “Yes; have you never read,

       ‘Out of the mouths of infants and nursing
             babies
           you have prepared praise for yourself’?”

He left them, went out of the city to Bethany, and spent the night there.

In the morning, when he returned to the city, he was hungry.
¹⁹
And seeing a fig tree by the side of the road, he went to it and found nothing at all on it but leaves. Then he said to it, “May no fruit ever come from you again!” And the fig tree withered at once.

When the disciples saw it, they were amazed, saying, “How did the fig tree wither at once?”

Jesus answered them, “Truly I tell you, if you have faith and do not doubt, not only will you do what has been done to the fig tree, but even if you say to this mountain, ‘Be lifted up and thrown into the sea,’ it will be done.
²²
Whatever you ask for in prayer with faith, you will receive.”

When he entered the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came to him as he was teaching, and said, “By what authority are you doing these things, and who gave you this authority?”

Jesus said to them, “I will also ask you one question; if you tell me the answer, then I will also tell you by what authority I do these things.
²⁵
Did the baptism of John come from heaven, or was it of human origin?” And they argued with one another, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will say to us, ‘Why then did you not believe him?’
²⁶
But if we say, ‘Of human origin,’ we are afraid of the crowd; for all regard John as a prophet.”
²⁷
So they answered Jesus, “We do not know.” And he said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things.

“What do you think? A man had two sons; he went to the first and said, ‘Son, go and work in the vineyard today.’
²⁹
He answered, ‘I will not’; but later he changed his mind and went.

The father

went to the second and said the same; and he answered, ‘I go, sir’; but he did not go.
³¹
Which of the two did the will of his father?” They said, “The first.” Jesus said to them, “Truly I tell you, the tax collectors and the prostitutes are going into the kingdom of God ahead of you.

For John came to you in the way of righteousness and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and the prostitutes believed him; and even after you saw it, you did not change your minds and believe him.
