Chapter Ten

After today’s events I’m calling a cab and going to the city for New Year’s Eve, alone. I don’t want to be around anyone I know. It’s too late to get ahold of Shelly to get a flight back tonight, so I just have to wait it out for a couple of days. I don’t know how someone can say one thing and do another that quickly. How could he be wanting to run away with me and skip out on marrying Rebecca, then the moment she rushes through the door he’s all hers again. None of it makes sense. I don’t even know what to think or feel. I wish I’d never come home.

My phone has seven missed calls and eleven text messages from Stephen. I ignored every single one of them. I don’t even know what I was thinking, fooling around with an engaged man. Stephen had changed. He was a huge douche now. If he’d cheat on his fiancé, I don’t know why I’d think he wouldn’t be unfaithful to me if we were to ever be together. I’m stupid. I’m so fucking stupid.

The cab pulls up to the curb out front of Club Country, it’s the hottest western country night club in Iowa. I walk in and glance around the crowded place, couples of course, all dressed in jeans and long sleeve flannel shirts or white t-shirts, with cowboy hats and boots. I walk up to the bar and sit down on the seat, which is a horse saddle. It’s probably the coolest seat I’ve ever seen. But goodness is it awkward to sit on.

The bartender looks over and asks for my order. “Surprise me. Just make it strong, nothing girly either.”

She smiles. “Sure thing, sweetie,” she says in a raspy voice, like she smokes about eight packs of cigarettes day. “How does a nice double-shot of Jack and Coke sound?” the bartender asks as she slides it in front of me.

“Thank you.” I take sip.

“You here all by yourself, hon? You’re too pretty to be sittin’ alone at a bar on New Year’s Eve.” I look up at her and then back down at my drink. I don’t want to sit here and talk to this woman. Someone save me!

“Honey, I got all night. We can talk about it if you want to,” she kindly offers.

“I’m fine, really. But thank you.” I slurp down my drink and ask for another. I grab the second drink and walk over to the dance floor.

I’m young. I’m beautiful. I’m twenty-four. My mom was right. I have a whole life ahead of me and one of these days someone, somewhere, will come along and sweep me off my feet when I least expect it…I felt someone bump into me and a sudden shiver zips through my body, due to a nice icy cold beer that drenches my shirt along with my ice cold glass of Jack and Coke.

“OH MY GOD THAT’S COLD!” I yell.

“Oh! I’m so sorry! Here, take my shirt,” says a tall, dirty blond haired man with scruff on his face. I couldn’t help but be distracted by the tattoos that cover his beautiful muscly arms.

“Thank you!” I laugh, and grab his shirt and put it on. It was warm from his body heat, and smelled of delicious cologne, alcohol, and cigarettes.

“What’s your name, and what were you drinking? I’ll get you another one, Miss.”

“Double shot of Jack Daniel’s and Coca-Cola.”

He walks to the bar and places our order. Gets the drinks and then comes back over to me. “Let’s go set these down at the table over there, that way we don’t spill ’em,” he says over the loud music.

“Okay, I’ll meet you back here. I need to go to the lady’s room.” I head to the restroom.

When I come back, Sexy Tattooed Man is gone. Sure enough, there sits one lonely drink at the table we were just at and he’s nowhere to be found. I chug the drink and start dancing by myself to Blake Shelton singing “My Eyes
.

The music stops and everyone gathers around for the countdown.

“FIVE! FOUR! THREE! TWO! ONE! HAPPY NEW YEAR!” Everyone shouts as it turns midnight. I feel a large hand grasp my shoulder and spin me around. A kiss is planted right upon my lips, okay it was more like a kiss was drunkenly slopped upon my lips. The kiss is absolutely horrific, but there was something about it I loved.

“HAPPY NEW YEAR! And will you tell me your name yet?” Sexy Tattooed Man yells over the cheering and the music. I’m completely caught off guard. This really may have been the most disgusting romantic thing that has ever happened to me.

“Addison, but you can call me Addi. What’s your name?”

“Lucas, but you can call me Luke.” He says with a slight smirk.

“It’s nice to meet you, Lucas.” I reach for his hand to shake it, but I feel my phone vibrate so I pull my hand back to see who’s calling, it’s Stephen. I tap ignore, put my phone back in my pocket, and reach out to shake Lucas’s hand. He grabs my hand and instead of shaking it, he puts his other hand around my back and he starts dancing with me.

“It’s nice to meet you too, Addison.” He looks nervous, and it’s hot. “I’m sorry, Addison, I normally don’t just go around kissing strangers and letting them go home in my shirts.”

“I find that hard to believe, it was all too suave.” I say sarcastically.

“Okay then, Miss Addison. Wanna make a bet?” He pulls me in a little closer to him to where our lips are practically touching.

“Why the hell not?” I whisper. I feel his breath on my lips. My heart starts to beat faster. I don’t know if it’s the alcohol or if it’s Lucas making me feel this way. There is a bar full of people and somehow I feel like it’s only us in the room.

“I bet you $300 we can go on thirty dates without kissing or having sex.” He whispers and we stop dancing. He takes a small step back, looks me dead in the eyes as serious as can be. In this moment, I would have never imagined he even had a lick of alcohol, but I’m sure we’ll both forget this by morning, and even if we don’t, I deserve an adventure and Lucas is an adventure I’d like to go on.

“Deal.”
