“I don’t know. Are we?” Sandra turned her attention towards Gabe and me.

“Well, can you navigate this thing? Are we going around Long Island? We need to think of some plan that will work.”

“I can’t navigate. I can drive, but I wouldn’t know what to do in open water.” Sandra shook her head.

“Then we hug the coast. That’ll get us to New York City. With three quarters of a tank, we should make it as long as we coast a lot of the way. We can always try to stop and siphon gas.”

“New York City will be a nightmare,” I said. The thought of all those people turned eaters made my stomach churn. Or maybe it wasn’t just the thought. Oh no. I spun around and vomited off the side of the boat. My body shook as air pushed its way out, burning the back of my throat and my nose.

“Seasick?” Liam asked when I sat back down.

“I guess.” I shrugged.

“Take a nap, Lana.” Gabe scooted down the bench and pulled me down so my head rested on his lap. He ran his hand through my sweaty hair. I wrapped my arms around my body and shivered. But not from the cold.

Someone put a blanket over me. Through the bars on the side of the boat, I saw just a pinprick of the orange glow of the flames. They were far in the distance now as we drove out to sea.

Jim was back there, most likely figuring out we had escaped. I wondered if he’d come and find us. I wondered if he even cared. I fell asleep to the sound of Gabe’s hushed whispers as they tried to come up with a plan. We were safe now. But I felt shattered inside.

This book was quite the adventure to write and like nothing I had written before. It took a lot of work, moving out of my comfort zone and trying something new, and I couldn’t have done it without some amazing help.

I have to give a shout out to my creative writing class at NCC. I workshopped the first chapter twice in the class and with their, and Mrs. Peterson’s help, the ideas really flourished. I’m not sure I would have even written this without the class’s help.

Danielle from Narrative Ink Editing was a big help, as usual. She not only edited the first round of this novel, but created the cover for this book and its sequel.

Mary Beth, I came to you in a crunch for a second round of editing/beta reading and you were an astronomical help, finding typos and errors and overall giving me invaluable feedback. Now that I have your number, be prepared for more!

Special shoutout to Lavati’s Little Helpers (my street team). This is the first book that they’ve been a part of with my new team and I’ve had a blast getting to know the new faces. Love you guys: Kat, Cu, Natalie, Paige, Darlene, Karlin, Riley, Randi, Sarah, Shirin, Maddie, Lea, Abigail, Vicky, Debra, Missy, Melissa, Lucy, Mercedes, and Victoria. <3

My husband, Chris, deserves a major pat on the back. I actually bounced ideas off of him for this book and he completely changed parts of the book (for the BETTER!). I think this was the first book he was interested in since it wasn’t all gooey and lovey. LOL. But you can thank HIM for the ending!

And everyone who has read, reviewed, promoted, talked about, loved, shared, liked, tweeted, or just enjoyed the book in the quiet of your living room. You’re the reason my eaters are alive and murdering. Keep on reading and rocking on!

If you liked The Last Legacy, I suggest reading A Reliant Love next!
