he journey home was a
long one, and I nearly feared we would not make it home before dawn shone its
revived light across the land once more.
With Niccolò leading the way,
Giuliana and I strode towards the villa, her hand in mine, smiling giddily at
one another. I knew we both were anticipating getting better acquainted in
every way possible.
Upon entering the villa, we
were enthusiastically greeted by Vincenzo. “Master, please allow me to help
you—”
His words were promptly cut
off by the sound of Giuliana’s gasp. His eyes turned to her, seeing her hands
thrown over her mouth, her eyes wide in disbelief.
“Giuliana?” he affirmed in
shock.
“Vincenzo!” she exclaimed, I
could sense her body ready to spring into his arms. Then noticing the startled
look upon Niccolò’s face, she quickly drew herself back. “Vincenzo… what a
delightful surprise finding you here,” she said striving to preserve her
composure, albeit her voice still perceptibly shaky.
Vincenzo’s eye darted to
Niccolò and then back to his former female lover, rapidly assessing the
situation. “A surprise indeed, it is!” he replied, also attempting to keep the
excitement from his voice.
At once I perceived what
‘twas had just occurred.
Of course, this is
Giuliana’s lost love of which she spoke. What a coincidence it would be
Vincenzo and that she would meet me and have me bring her back here so that
they could be reunited!
Niccolò cleared his throat,
drawing all eyes back to him. “I presume you two are acquainted?”
Vincenzo tried to hold back
his smile. “Yes, we are. In fact, Giuliana and I worked together at
Sanguelascivia
.
She had only been there a couple weeks prior to my departure to come here with
you.”
I studied Giuliana’s face as
she took in this information, the missing piece to her mystery. I wondered
whether she would be able to forgive him fer abandoning her or would she hold
it against him, his leaving voluntarily as that?
“Yes, that is correct,” she
chimed in smoothly. Vincenzo and I had the occasion to meet just briefly.
Niccolò raised a brow at
them, and I could see that he was not altogether buying their story. I
wondered to meself whether he had already read the true story in their
thoughts. Still, the fine gentleman he was, he played along. “Well,
wonderful! Then no introductions shall be necessary!”
