A
lthough the characters and events in this novel are fictional, the story takes place in the real town of Banff, Alberta, with the backdrop of the Banff Springs Hotel, completed in 1888.
In 1926, when the original structure burned to the ground, it was replaced by the current steel and stone hotel, even more massive and magnificent than the first. William Cornelius Van Horne, the president and visionary of the Canadian Pacific Railway and its hotels, was later knighted for his achievements.
The park reserve, which is now called Banff National Park, has grown to many times its original size.
As businesses changed hands throughout the years, property disputes persisted.
Banff continues to be a thriving tourist destination, and will always be one of my favorite places.
