Olive Oil Usage Guidelines

FIND YOUR FAVORITE OLIVE OIL

I AM OFTEN ASKED
about my favorite olive oils, and each time I hesitate because … first of all I must ask: “For what use?” Is it for drizzling on food or cooking? For around the house? For massaging your partner or the dog? I generally use extra virgin olive oil for most everything; however, check the following charts, Suggested Types of Olive Oil for 100 Uses and Suggested Types of Olive Oil for Cooking, and, using your own judgment, you will discover what is best for you.

The next question is: What is your favorite extra virgin olive oil? I answer that one’s preference in olive oil is really a matter of personal taste. I know people who buy
only
one specific brand of extra virgin olive oil; I am more experimental in my approach. I belong to several olive oil clubs and receive different imported estate olive oils and olive oils from California each month. I also buy olive oil from producers and retailers that I know and trust. My favorite tends to be a high-intensity extra virgin olive oil, in terms of fruitiness, bitterness, and pungency.

Some Guidelines for Buying Extra Virgin Olive Oil

1. Always check for a producing country’s seal of authenticity—for example, the
COOC
from California;
DOP
from Italy;
AOC
from France;
DOP
from Greece;
DO
from Spain.

2. Check the “use by” date.

3. Check for the winners of olive oil competitions—for example, the worldwide competition, hosted each year at the Los Angeles County Fair. These oils will have additional seals, signifying Gold, Silver, and Bronze medals on the bottles.

My Best Advice

Ask the official tasters at olive oil competitions (by checking the award results online), or quiz your trusted retailer. Then, after experimenting and tasting, ask yourself … what do you personally like?
