The Red Zone

Mack Mahoney is hot, popular and used to getting exactly what he wants…until he sets his sights on the new girl, Kaija Bennett. She’s an exchange student from New Zealand and attending Nelson High for three months. Mack’s never been one for love at first sight, but this chick has him feeling things he never knew existed within him and, in spite of her feisty rejections, he’s determined to get to know her.

Kaija Bennett did not escape her New Zealand high school only to be dragged into the popular crowd at Nelson High. She’s on the run from a past she wants to forget, and the attention of the gorgeous quarterback is not helping. Can she resist his pulling power and keep her secret safe? Or will the dynamic football captain unearth the truth and make her fall harder than she ever has before?

Note from the Author

I don’t know that much about football. Having been raised in a country where football isn’t played, it left me kind of blind to the sport. But I’ve read some excellent high school football stories, and I really wanted to try one out. Thankfully, my amazing brother is just a little obsessed with the sport and has been instrumental in helping me form the team and create game scenes that were exciting and so much fun to write. Mark—thank you for your time and attention to detail. I love you so much.

I’d also like to thank Cassie, Rae and Beth, my amazing critique readers and editor. You guys are so important to me. Thank you so much for helping me make this story something special. I have loved working on this project, and part of that joy comes from interacting with you guys. And while I’m thanking amazing people for their input into this book, I’d also like to thank my cover designer, Matt—you totally captured my vision! My logo designer, Kate—I love you. And my proofreaders and advanced review team—your insights, eagle eyes and valued opinions mean the world to me. Thank you so much!

I also want to say a special thank you to Susan Kaye Quinn. Her book
For Love or Money
was an inspiration to me and helped me find my way. She is one of the nicest authors I’ve had the privilege of chatting with online. It was a real treat.

And lastly, I’d like to thank God and my family for their constant support and encouragement. Writers are often plagued with doubts and second-guesses. Having you guys in the background cheering me on and believing in me is what helps me keep going.

The Playmaker
started out as a ‘we’ll see how it goes’ kind of project, and I ended up completely falling in love with Tori and Colt. Tori’s quirks make me smile and Colt is just the kind of guy I would have fallen for in high school…but more than that happened. I ended up getting to know Finn, Mack and Tyler as I wrote this book, and their stories have come to life while I’ve been working on
The Playmaker
. I can’t wait to share them all with you.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read this story. Thank you for giving my work a chance. I hope you come to fall in love with the Nelson High Raiders as much as I have.

xx

About the Author

Jordan Ford is a New Zealand author who has spent her life traveling with her family, attending international schools, and growing up in a variety of cultures. Although it was sometimes hard shifting between schools and lifestyles, she doesn’t regret it for a moment. Her experiences have enriched her life and given her amazing insights into the human race.

She believes that everyone has a back story…and that story is fundamental in how people cope and react to life around them. Telling stories that are filled with heart-felt emotion and realistic characters is an absolute passion of Jordan’s. Since her earliest memories, she has been making up tales to entertain herself. It wasn’t until she reached her teen years that she first considered writing one. A computer failure and lost files put a major glitch in her journey, and it took until she graduated university with a teaching degree before she took up the dream once more. Since then, she hasn’t been able to stop.

“Writing high school romances brings me the greatest joy. My heart bubbles, my insides zing, and I am at my happiest when immersed in a great scene with characters who have become real to me.”
