“Holy Shit, Lori…I figured that there was a hot, passionate woman under that professional demeanor, but I never expected this,” Matt said softly as he held her, toying with her hair.

“Why me?,” she asked, still wondering why this had happened.  It was the best, mind- blowing sex she had ever had, but she had to wonder why.  “You’ve never shown any interest in me before.”

“I’ve always wanted you,” he sighed, sounding a little disgruntled.  “But you had a live-in boyfriend and I knew once I had you that I would never share.  I could hardly stand the thought of you going home to him every night.”

“He was a mistake.  I was lonely,” she admitted.  “But he didn’t care about me.  I got swindled.”

He kissed her tenderly, gently.  He stroked her cheek as he looked into her eyes and smiled.  “You know I’ll help you.  Whatever it is that you need, I’ll help you.”

She smiled.  Lori knew that she had found what she needed.

They dressed silently, both at a loss for words after what had just happened.

Her legs were still a little unsteady as she brushed down her skirt and picked up her purse from the floor.

Matt was trying to knot his tie in a small wall mirror.  He was dressed in a different shirt that he had pulled out of a small closet in the corner of the office.  He  had flipped the other one with the ripped off buttons into the trash.

“See ya tomorrow?,” she queried lightly as she kissed him on the cheek.

“Tomorrow,”  he agreed as he watched her walk towards the door.

Lori had her hand on the doorknob when he called softly, “Hey Lori?”

“Yes?”  she turned back, looking over her shoulder.

“I restocked the petty cash.  Would you mind grabbing some twenties so that we can discuss it tomorrow?” he questioned hopefully.

“Certainly Mr. Walker.  Whatever you say,” she told him as she flashed him a cheeky smile and a wink as she slipped out the door, closing it behind her.

**********

Matt grinned into the mirror as he finished his tie and pulled on his suite jacket.  As he left the office, he checked the petty cash, holding his breath as he opened the box.  A hundred dollars was missing.  He smiled all the way home, knowing tomorrow couldn’t come quickly enough.

She was finally home!

Maddie Price raced across the open land on her beloved horse Sheba at a breakneck gallop, her blonde hair flying even though it was covered by a tan Stetson to shade her light skin from the sun.  Nothing could contain her joy at finally being home after four years away from her grandpa and his small, hobby ranch.

She had grown up here.  She belonged here.  This was home. Four years of living in the city for college had been stifling.  Too many people, too much noise, surrounded by concrete.  It was confining for a woman who had grown up in the wide open spaces.

Well...now she had her degree in English Literature.  She could stay at the ranch forever and write, hopefully following in Grandpa's footsteps.  Her grandfather had an impressive writing career and she hoped to do the same.

Grandpa needed her.  All they had was each other now that her parents and Grandma were gone.  He had undergone two heart surgeries and his heart was slowly giving out.  He was fragile…even though he would deny it.   The ranch had a great cook/housekeeper and men to look after the livestock, but he needed his only family member home.

Maddie slowed Sheba to a walk as she pulled in a breath of fresh air, filling her lungs and her soul with the smell of home.

“Good girl.”  She patted Sheba's neck as she praised her.

After four years of being away, Maddie tried to familiarize herself with her surroundings.  She turned her horse towards the west and knew she had crossed the boundaries of Grandpa's land about a half mile back when she had jumped a fence with Sheba.  She was on Flying J property now.  Just about anything beyond Grandpa's property belonged to the Flying J.  She wasn't entirely sure of their total acreage, but they were one of the biggest cattle industries in the country.

Taking in the familiar landmarks as she guided her horse slowly, she knew she was headed in the right direction.  Maddie was anxious to rediscover her old "thinking place."  She used to retreat there nearly every day before she had gone away to college.  It was a beautiful area where the stream ran through the property, one of the few areas surrounded by woods and trees.  As she looked to her left...she saw it.  Her patch of woods and serenity.

She signaled Sheba with her thighs to increase her speed.  There was a fence between her and the trees so she encouraged Sheba forward and took the jump.

Maddie had probably taken the leap with her horse a thousand times before, but for some reason, Sheba's leg didn't get high enough and slammed against the bottom rung of the fence.   Dismayed, Maddie reined Sheba to a halt and looked back at the fence.  It must have been loose because a good fifteen foot section had toppled like dominos.

She lead her horse forward and let out a sigh of relief as she examined her leg.  Sheba wasn't favoring it and there was no abrasion.  It must have been her hoof that caught the edge.

She walked over to the fence, checking the wood.  It looked like it had been repaired in other sections, but this section was rotted and probably had been ready to collapse.  It had only taken a nudge to down the whole section.

Standing with her hands on her hips she muttered, "Well...hell.  What should I do now?"  She couldn't leave the fence that way.  There were no cattle in this particular area at the moment, but they could wander out if they made their way this direction.  The main house of the Flying J was miles away, but there was nothing for it.  She was going to have to go and let them know the fence was down.  With a longing look at her patch of woods she turned to remount Sheba.

"Well...if it isn't Ms. Maddie Price," a low, graveled voice spoke from directly behind her.

Startled, Maddie took her foot out of the stirrup and rounded to see a face she hadn't seen in years.

Jason Sterling.

Holy crap...he hadn't changed much.  He and his daddy owned the Flying J and Jason was the last person she had expected to see riding the fences.  There were plenty of hands to do that.

"Jason," she nodded politely.

He approached the distance separating them on his huge black gelding and gracefully dismounted.  "Welcome home, Maddie."

Maddie had always been intimidated by Jason and she could tell that hadn't changed because her stomach dropped to her feet as she surveyed him.  She couldn't say they had ever been friends.  By the time Maddie had been old enough to have playmates, Jason was away at college.  By the time he had returned, she had her own friends and was starting high school.  He and his daddy had come to visit at the ranch occasionally, but she had rarely spoke to him.   When she visited at college breaks, they had never run into each other.

She had always considered Jason ruggedly handsome.  He was big.  She wasn't exactly sure how tall he was but he towered over her own five-foot- three inch height and made her feel like a runt.  He had a muscular body that showed to advantage in snug blue jeans, a t-shirt and brown cowboy boots.  His toffee colored hair was still topped by his ever-present black Stetson.

She might have been intimidated by him in high school, but she had also had a severe case of teenage adoration.  She had carried the schoolgirl crush on him from the time she was sixteen until she left home for college.

Her heart pounded wildly as she looked up at his rough, unsmiling face, made harder by the five-o’clock-shadow dark stubble on his jaw.  Some things never changed.  Jason still had the power to take her breath away.

You’re not a teenager anymore, Maddie.

Maybe not, but Jason Sterling still had a way about him that made her feel like one.

Jason frowned as he surveyed the downed fence.  "What did you do to my fencing, Maddie?"

"I'm sorry, Jason.  Sheba clipped it on a jump and it fell.  That portion was rotted and--"

"It just fell right over?,"  he gave her a skeptical look.

Maddie shivered.  His light drawl was as smooth as a fine whiskey.  "It was already falling over, Jason,” she answered him indignantly.

"We have "no trespassing" signs for a reason.  I know for a fact you probably passed several of them on your way here."  He crossed his arms over his chest as he glared at her.

"Jason...we've been neighbors since I was born.  I've always ridden over this land.  What--"

"Not anymore," he answered bluntly.  "We're losing cattle. Stolen.  Somebody is downing a small portion of the fence and loading them up at night."

Maddie strode forward until she was close enough to touch him.  She planted her hands on her hips and she met his eyes.  Unfortunately, she had to crank her neck back to see him. "Surely you don't think I have anything to do with that.  I just got home a week ago."

"You still have your fair share of friends here," he drawled.

"I've barely even seen any of my old friends yet.  Jason, you know this was just a little accident,"  she quipped with exasperation.

"I don't know anything except you're trespassing and my fence is down.  I need to call the police and let them investigate this.  At the very least it's trespassing and destruction of property."  As he finished he pulled out his cell phone.

"Don't!  Jason, if Grandpa hears about this he’ll be upset.  You know his heart is bad.  He can't take much right now.  He's fragile.”  Damn. Stubborn. Cowboy.  His expression didn’t give an inch as she continued,   “He always says you and your daddy are so good to him and watch out for him.  This will upset him,"  she finished, still wearing an expression of disbelief.  Was he bluffing, or was he really going to follow through?  Jason had always been a tease…but it was hard to tell when he was serious and when he was joking.

Jason Sterling was something of a mystery…a fact that had always intrigued her.

Jason started to toss his phone up and down, catching it easily and watching her out of the corner of his eye.  "So, what do you suppose we do, Maddie?  I don't want to upset you're grandpa...but I'm not happy about this.  You should have known better than to come trespassing when you saw all of the signs."

"Grandpa didn't tell me about the cattle thefts.  I didn't know,"  she told him with remorse.  Had she known, she wouldn't have set foot on their property until the case was resolved.  Cattle thefts were serious business in this part of the country.  "I just wanted to see my old thinking place again,”  she finished in a mournful voice.

"And where's that?" he questioned, still methodically tossing the phone up and down.  It irritated her, but she bit her lip.  It was better to stay cordial until she could figure out what he was thinking.  Looking at his stoic face, she was beginning to wonder if anyone could ever truly understand what lie beneath his cool, perplexing exterior.
