âI promise. Kiss me good night. And don't be long.'
He sat on the edge of the bed and took her in his arms and kissed her on the mouth. He felt a pain in his body, and it was the pain of leaving her. It wasn't fear at all.
âI love you, Terese. I have always loved you. Never forget that.'
âI won't,' she whispered. âI love you too.'
He got up and went to the door; before he opened it, he turned and looked at her once more.
âSleep now,' he said. âDon't wait for me.'
He opened the door and stepped outside; it was a bright moonlit night and he started to walk slowly ahead into the open space. Shadows among the surrounding trees detached themselves and began to move towards him. There was a short burst of shots, and then silence. The boy in the office didn't bother to come out and look; he thought it was a car backfiring and went on reading his paperback.
