“Me? Never. The guy I’m looking for just doesn’t exist. Besides, I think there are some people who are meant to be alone.”
“Maybe the guy you’re looking for is closer than you think?”
There was something in his voice she’d never heard before and she brought her gaze back to his face. Their gazes met and held.
“Kyle Wilder, are you flirting with me?”
He shrugged. “What if I am? I remember a time when you wouldn’t have minded.”
Dana smiled, but oddly enough, she felt a little out of breath. There was something deep and brooding in his eyes that thrilled her. “I was sixteen, inexperienced, and incredible naïve. I’m surprised you put up with my crush for as long as you did.”
“I was flattered.”
Dana made a face. “You were polite.” The turn of conversation began to make her feel like that sixteen-year-old again: gauche, shy, and awkward. Her and Kyle? Never. He was her best friend. Her confidante. My God, she knew everything about him. All about his ex-girlfriends, his dreams, his fears. Could best friends turn into lovers? Where would the spice of life be?
No way, she thought. They had passed their point of no return. Besides, sex ruined friendships and she would never do anything to spoil their relationship.
“Speaking of flirting,” she said, glancing past his big shoulders. “I think Edward and Kate’s mom are conducting a little interlude of their own.” Kyle turned his head and saw the older couple sharing a couple of glasses of champagne on the porch. He looked back into Dana’s eyes.
“I think you’re right. And my compliments on your smooth change of subject.”
“Upset?” Dana grinned.
“At you? Never.”
“Good. Now drop this nonsense, and let’s go dance.”
