On the sofa, Claudia relaxed back against the warmth of Nick, who wouldn’t take his arms from around her. He sprinkled the top of her head with kisses as he lazily watched

and she flicked through her guide books. Joe was snoozing quietly, his Santa hat falling over his eyes, while Christine snored loudly from the opposite armchair. Flippers lay upside down in front of the fireplace, his belly toasting happily.
Claudia rolled over to face Nick. ‘You know last night, when we were behind the Christmas tree?’
‘Mmm-hmm,’ he smiled sleepily.
‘You said something. Do you remember?’
‘I said a lot of bollocks, sorry about that.’
‘But there was one other thing. You said you loved me.’
‘That I did.’
‘Was that bollocks? I mean, we haven’t been together long – I don’t blame you if you haven’t fallen in love.’
‘I haven’t fallen in love,’ he yawned. ‘I’ve loved you for years.’
Claudia stretched up and pressed her face against Nick’s, giving him a happy kiss.
He dragged over the tin of Quality Street. ‘Here, I saved you all the strawberry creams.’
‘You did? You can have one.’
‘Nah, that’s okay, they’re your favourites. Can I have some of the toffee pennies?
She knew she shouldn’t base an entire relationship upon Christmas chocolates, but it was one heck of a way to start.
