“Jesse, you be quiet! You’re making my head so big it’ll explode, and then who’ll do the cooking!”

“You make a strong point, Mrs. V. I will never compliment your cooking again, cross my heart and hope to pie. What, pie? Why would I say ‘pie’? That’s weird. That’s like a Freudian thing. Must be craving that delicious dessert I smelled baking when I walked in. Blueberry, right? If that’s not blueberry, I don’t have a nose. And if you’ll take a look – I’m talking to you, too, Cody – you’ll see that I absolutely do have an unmistakable, world class, proboscis.”

“What’s that mean? Proboscis?” asked Cody.

“It means I can balance two beach balls on this thing without leaning back.”

“Spider,” said Brandi, interrupting.

“Yeah?”

“It’s good to see you,” she said.

Spider took a long look at Brandi, waiting for a sarcastic follow up, or maybe for her eyes to roll. But there was nothing to see. Just Brandi, looking back at him, with an almost imperceptible smile on her face.

“You too,” he sighed.
