He closed his eyes. “Watch it,” Javier said. “I really don’t
want to disappoint you, but I’m not going to make it inside you if you keep
that up.”

Emily grinned and put on the condom.

“Open for me,” Javier whispered.

She winked and opened her mouth. Javier pinched her earlobe.
“I can’t hold back long enough to give you another spanking. Open your
legs
,
Emily.”

She obeyed, her long, tan legs spreading with the poise and
control of a ballet dancer. He managed to appreciate the view for about a
second before climbing on top of her and burying himself inside her with a
groan.

She wrapped around him with muscular limbs, her legs locking
behind his back and her arms circling his neck. “I feel like I’ve been waiting
forever for this,” Javier said.

“Wow, how badly do you whine if someone makes you wait a
week?”

He licked the end of her nose. “Brat.” Javier returned a
mischievous grin to rival hers and set about transforming her sass to sighs of
pleasure. He ground his pelvis against hers until she gasped and nibbled down
each side of her neck.

He tried to pull all the way out so he could torture her
with a slow slide back in. Emily prevented this by holding him in place with
her legs. They engaged in a silent tug of war. “I want you
inside
me,”
Emily cried. The complaining tone in her voice made Javier collapse in helpless
laughter against her chest. His body’s shaking wiggled his cock inside her,
creating a tickling sensation along the side of his shaft. He couldn’t figure
out which way it made him want to move.

“I don’t know if I can do this anymore,” he said when he
caught his breath.

Immediately, she plastered on a sober expression that
threatened to send him into another fit of guffaws. “No, no, Javier. Stay with
me here.”

She unlocked her ankles. He covered his mouth with his hand.

“Pull yourself together, man. This was feeling so good.
Please.”

He rested his forehead against hers. “When I imagined you
begging for my cock, this wasn’t exactly the circumstance I pictured.”

“I’ll be good,” Emily said. “I promise.” She rocked her hips
against his. “Now, um, please get back to it. Focus.”

More laughter burst out of him. “You are killing me.”

“Oh my God.” Emily made a frustrated gesture toward the
ceiling, and the next thing Javier knew, he’d landed on his back on the floor.
She settled both hands on his pecs and started to ride him, her tight, sharp
thrusts restoring his cock to full arousal.

“Hey! I’m supposed to be dominating
you
here!”

“You know what happens when you drop your guard.” Emily
arched her back as she took him in deep, showing the full length of her slim
neck as she threw her head toward the ceiling. Her small breasts rode high on
her chest. Laughter dropped away completely at the magnificent sight. Javier
had to possess her.

“No, you don’t,” he said, grabbing for her. Thrown by
pleasure, Emily couldn’t use her martial arts advantage. Muscle to muscle,
Javier overpowered her, pulling her tight against his chest and rolling them
both again. He stayed inside her and wound up on top. To emphasize the
statement he’d just made, he hooked his arms under both her knees, folding her
in half beneath him.

There. Ecstasy ripped across her face as he pressed inside
her at a new angle. He braced his arms beside her head and took her hard as she
lay trapped under his weight.

Sweat dripped from Javier’s forehead. He knew he couldn’t
hold back much longer. She looked too beautiful beneath him, and his deep, fast
thrusts felt too good. Still, he wanted her to have just a little more pleasure
before this ended. “Touch yourself, Emily.”

She obeyed, slipping her hand between their bodies. Her
fingertips nudged his thrusting shaft as they rolled and rubbed her clit. Emily
brought her other hand up to her left breast, squeezing and kneading it. She
stiffened beneath him, and Javier couldn’t hold out against the sight of her,
mouth half open, lifting her hips to him as orgasm spread through her body.

He joined her in joyful oblivion.

Chapter Thirteen

Neva rubbed her eyes. She’d waited up for Matthew the night
before until she couldn’t keep them open, then she’d drunk a pot of coffee and
waited some more. Her computer screen swam. Her head felt dry. The sun coming
in through the glass storefront pierced her brain as if she’d spent the
previous night getting drunk.

She examined her fingernails. She’d ruined them again.

The front door to Guy’s Bail Bonds creaked open. Neva braced
herself. She couldn’t think of anyone she’d be happy to see.

Emily appeared, striding in with bounce and confidence. Her
hair, normally pulled into a severe ponytail or up into an even more severe
bun, hung plaited in an uncharacteristically intricate pattern. A red mark on
her neck suggested the shape of a man’s mouth. Her big, blue eyes glowed and
practically danced.

A terrible suspicion started in Neva’s gut. She ducked under
the desk and pretended to search for something in her purse so she wouldn’t
have to torture herself any longer with Emily’s approach. Maybe she’d come to
see Guy. He’d been in the back room all morning. They could have a long
conference back there, and Neva wouldn’t have to look at either of them.

“Hey, Neva.” Emily chirped her greeting, then jumped up to
sit on the edge of the desk.

Neva’s fingers closed around her phone. It made as good an
excuse as anything. She checked it. Two text messages from Matthew, both in the
last thirty minutes. Neva did a mental calculation of how long it would have
taken Emily to drive to Guy’s Bail Bonds from Matthew’s house. Nausea rose in
the back of her throat.

“You okay?” Emily asked, leaning to peer over the edge of
the desk.

Neva jerked up, ready to play off her hurt. She cracked her
head on the desk in the process. She cried out and rocked back and forth in her
chair.

“Neva! Oh my God!” Emily ran toward her. Neva threw out a
hand, warning her back. The last thing she needed right then was her friend’s
sympathy.

The motion knocked her off balance even more. The chair’s
wheels shot out from under her and she crashed to the floor, barely avoiding
another lump to the head. She lay still and gasping, feeling more humiliated
than ever before.

Tan boxing shoes appeared beside her head. Neva closed her
eyes, unable to bear the sight of Emily.

“Neva, will you please let me help you up?”

Neva swallowed, then nodded miserably. She tried to take
Emily’s assistance as intended, but as her friend’s strong, slender fingers closed
around her upper arms, all she could do was speculate about why Matthew
preferred them. Emily didn’t seem big enough to do it, but she lifted Neva
without any sign of effort.

“Do you think you got a concussion? Can you look me in the
eye?”

“Jesus, I just hit my head on the desk. It’s not a big
deal.”

“Humor me.”

Neva sighed and met Emily’s gaze. Pain stabbed through her
again at the clear joy on Emily’s face. Not even her current concern could hide
it. She pushed back from Emily and turned away.

Emily shot her hand out and grabbed Neva’s wrist. “Neva.
Please. What did I do?”

“I don’t want to talk about it.”

Emily sighed and released her. Neva took the opportunity to
walk as far away as she could get in the small office. She took a deep breath
to steady herself. Neva knew she wasn’t being fair to Emily, but behaving
generously in the face of being spurned so obviously felt like too much to ask.

“Look, Neva, I’ll leave if you want me to. I hope you feel
comfortable telling me what happened sometime. I guess before I go, I just want
to know if our deal’s off on the Bonavita case.”

Neva rounded on her. “Why don’t you ask Matthew? You two
both keep coming to me wanting to make deals. Why don’t you work together
already and leave me alone?”

Emily paled. “What the hell are you talking about?”

“I’m not stupid, Emily. You swore you were over him, but you
made a special effort to tell me to stay away from him, didn’t you? Then he
keeps asking about you, even when he’s supposed to be seeing me. He stands me
up last night, and you—well, you show up looking like you just rolled out of
bed, if you know what I mean.”

Emily blinked and took a couple of steps back. “Neva, you’ve
got the wrong idea. Really wrong.”

“Yeah. You and Matthew are just friends. Go tell that to
some other sucker.”

Emily came toward Neva again. Backed against the wall, she
had nowhere left to go. Neva hung her head. “Can you just let it be? Please? He
was your man first, I get it. I just can’t take you pretending to be my friend
at the same time.”

Emily touched Neva’s hand, her fingers strangely cool
compared to the jealous heat filling Neva’s entire body. “Let’s both sit down
and talk about this. Please. Before either of us jumps to a whole bunch of
conclusions. Can you give me that much before you write me off as a friend?”

A ragged breath filled Neva’s lungs. No matter what happened
now, she’d feel foolish, but she felt a morbid urge to know exactly how badly
Matthew had humiliated her. Finally, she nodded and allowed Emily to guide her
back to her desk. Her friend righted the chair and Neva seated herself again, a
little gingerly. Emily resumed her spot on the desk’s surface.

“Now I don’t know what you think happened,” Emily said, “but
I can tell you that I wouldn’t go back to Matthew Lodi’s bed if it was
necessary to save the world. I’m not trying to insult you, Neva. I just want
you to understand that I’m really and truly over him. No question whatsoever.”

Neva folded her arms across her chest and narrowed her eyes.
“You have a hickey on your neck.”

It would have been funny if Neva hadn’t been so angry.
Emily’s eyes snapped open, and she jumped off the desk, fingers searching her
exposed skin as if she’d be able to feel the hickey’s location.

“See?” Neva said. “Don’t try to lie to me, especially not when
it’s so obvious.”

Emily growled and stamped her foot on the floor. “Will you
chill out? I’m embarrassed about the damn hickey, but it’s not from Matthew.”
She rolled her eyes and blew a frustrated breath, ruffling the few escaped
hairs along her forehead. “If you must know, I’m having a…thing…with Javier
Bonavita.”

Neva blinked, a bit of clear thinking returning to her.
“Javier Bonavita
?As in, Fernando Bonavita’s kid brother?”

“Well, he’s definitely not a kid,” Emily said, then turned
such a fascinating shade of red that Neva couldn’t entertain any further doubt.

“Damn, girl. I didn’t think you were the type to get
information
that
way.”

The blush extended even further down Emily’s neck. “That’s
not why I slept with him.”

“Wow, you slept with him already? How long have you known
him?”

Emily plopped down on the desk again and dropped her head
into her hands. “You’re not making this easy, Neva.”

“Are you kidding? You’re sleeping with your quarry’s
brother. There’s nothing easy about it.”

“You’re telling me.”

“I want all the juicy details.”

Emily shook her head, but her half-grin told Neva she’d
spill. “We’ll get a coffee later, Neva, I promise. First, I need to ask—”

“Like hell! First, you need to answer! If you didn’t sleep
with him for information, what’s going on? You don’t have feelings for him?”
Neva leaned forward, as if a closer examination of Emily’s face might reveal
the information that her friend kept concealed.

“Neva, I don’t know. It’s only been a couple days…”

Neva’s mouth dropped open. “You
don’t know
? Jesus.
You’re totally in love with him, aren’t you?”

Emily scowled. “How do you get from ‘don’t know’ to ‘totally
in love’?”

“If you didn’t have feelings, you’d just say no, Emily.
You’re only getting all weird about it because you’re embarrassed about how
into him you are.”

Emily pressed her lips together and looked over her shoulder
out the window. A triumphant grin curved across Neva’s lips. “I wouldn’t call
it ‘love’,” Emily said after a minute, grudgingly.

“Not yet anyway.”

Emily whacked her arm. Neva didn’t call her on it. She
guessed she deserved it after the way the conversation had started. Then
Emily’s face got serious and Neva sighed. She could tell when the focus was
about to shift back to her, in a big way.

“What’s with Matthew?” Emily said.

“Look, if it doesn’t have anything to do with you, do me a
favor and don’t ask. Okay?”

Emily pressed her lips together. “Okay. But you said
something about both of us wanting to make deals.”

“Emily. We have an agreement. I’m working for you.” Neva controlled
her face carefully, holding back the wince that kept wanting to form. It really
wasn’t that bad that she’d called Matthew to let him know when Emily would be
at Guy’s. Emily wouldn’t understand if she brought it up, but there wasn’t any
need to mention it.

A skeptical frown played over Emily’s face long enough that
Neva started to feel insulted. Then her friend shrugged and drummed her fingers
on the surface of the desk. She leaned in close. “I got a lead I want you to
check out.”

“From Javier?”

Emily narrowed her eyes in a silent response that betrayed
plenty of information. “Her name is Carolina Mendes.”

Neva smirked for long enough to make Emily uncomfortable,
then nodded. She handed her a pen and notepad. “Write the name down for me,
along with everything you know about her. I can check her out.”

Guy chose that moment to come out of the back room. “You
girls doing okay out here? I heard some kind of crashing.”

Emily set down the pad of paper and moved toward the door.
Neva glared at her. A couple years ago, she would have wanted Emily to clear
out when Guy showed up, but things were different now. “Guy!” Emily said with a
smile that made Neva want to kick her. “If you want to play hero, you’ve got to
move faster. That crashing sound happened about five minutes ago. I already
lifted Neva off the floor myself. She hit her head pretty bad, I think.”

Guy crossed the floor to Neva in a single step. His hand on
her shoulder shot her body full of electricity. Matthew would have to go down
on her for half an hour to get her this excited, and that was saying something.
“You okay?”

Neva couldn’t find her voice. She glanced toward Emily for
help, only to find the bitch had abandoned her with her sexy boss.

Guy’s thick fingers sank into her hair. They rasped against
the back of her head, hotter than they ought to be. “Look at me,” he said. “You
might have a concussion.”

Neva groaned, either because everyone thought they were an
amateur doctor or because his hands felt just as big and gentle as she’d always
imagined. Guy cupped her chin and lifted it. Neva took a deep breath and looked
in his eyes. Deep, brown, concerned and entirely focused on her. Her lips
parted without her permission.

Guy frowned. “Your pupils look fine, but you’ve got dark
circles under your eyes. Are you sleeping okay lately, Neva?”

“Huh? Oh yeah. I’m fine. You don’t have to worry about
that.” She shook her head, working herself free of his hands before she did
something stupid. “Thanks, but I’m really okay. I just fell over in a stupid
way. Emily startled me when she came in. That’s all.”

Guy released her when she stepped back, but was that
disappointment crossing his face? “I’m sorry,” Guy said, in a downcast mumble
that tore at Neva’s heart.

“I appreciate the concern, Guy. Really.”

He nodded once. He didn’t say anything else, but he seemed
hesitant about returning to the back room. Neva stared at him, incredulous. If
she hadn’t spent years pining for him with no result, she’d have been certain
he wanted her. She bit her lip. Now might not be the best time, but to hell
with Matthew Lodi. He’d forfeited any claim he had on her when he’d stood her
up last night, again.

Slowly, she walked toward Guy, unable to meet his eyes.
Closer, then even closer. Close enough to feel the heat radiating off his skin,
and still Guy didn’t say a word. His breath blew across her cheek. Neva
gathered her courage and took one final step, bringing the length of her body
in contact with his. His jeans brushed her jeans, the rasp of fabric loud in
the small room. Neva’s heart pounded so hard she couldn’t form thoughts around
the noise of it in her head.

As soon as she could stand to, she tilted her head back to
check Guy’s expression.

Seeing puzzlement on his face, Neva flushed and ducked her
head again. She stepped back quickly, only to find Guy’s hand on her hip,
stopping her. She moaned aloud, and her remaining restraint snapped.

Neva flung herself into his arms, hungry for his mouth and
beyond worry about his reaction. Guy growled in the back of his throat. He
slipped his tongue between her lips as if he owned her. Neva went limp in his
arms, trusting him to hold her up. He did.

Guy lifted her into his arms and backed toward the wall. A
little shock went through both their bodies when he came up against it. Neva
didn’t react, afraid to break the kiss for even a second. Reality, she felt
sure, would crash down any moment.

She rested her hands on his shoulders, enjoying the solid
bulk of him. Her gesture seemed to encourage him. He switched his own grip to
her ass, squeezing as he continued to hold her up effortlessly. Neva squirmed
in his arms until she freed her legs to wrap around him. Guy responded by
carrying her into the back room, kicking the door closed behind them.

Dingy filing cabinets covered an even dingier floor. The
sofa had seen better days. Alone with Guy at last, touching him, to Neva this
was paradise.

Guy pushed Neva’s legs free of him and set her on the hard
stone floor. He held up both hands as if protesting innocence. “I’m not a nice
man,” Guy said, his voice twice as deep as usual.
