Chapter 20

“D
o you love me enough to stay with me and never leave me again?”

At his hoarsely asked question, Naomi would have shot straight up in bed, had she the energy to do so.

As it was, she could only move startled eyes to where he was now propped up next to her.

She ran loving eyes over him, her hand reaching up to cover and cup his shadowed cheek.

“I think we need to talk about a few things first, don’t you?” she asked, tugging on her lower lip, her eyes darting over his beloved face.

She loved him. She also knew that he loved her. But...

“I know. I was an ass. I’m sorry, baby,” he began, and she leaned back on the pillow, keeping her gaze on his.

“Go on...” she encouraged, fighting back the need to smile from pure happiness.

Canton saw her struggle to keep from smiling, and his heart did that crazy flip it did whenever she smiled at him. Hell, whenever she was within a forty-mile radius of him.

He was worried she would never forgive him for hurting her so badly. After making love to her, some of his worries had been alleviated. Some. But not all.

He knew he had to give her everything. No holding back.

While she’d been recovering from their lovemaking, he’d reached down and grabbed the square box inside his pocket. He kept it behind him, knowing that he needed to speak from his heart first before they could move forward.

He took her hand in his and brought the box from behind him to hold loosely in the other.

“Naomi McBride, you invaded my heart, my mind and my dreams seven years ago.”

He saw her inhale a deep breath, her eyes darting from his to the box he held in his hand.

“But, first things first,” he said, dreading her reaction. “About your family’s lien. I know I should have told you from the beginning that we held it. But, to be honest, baby, I didn’t know how.” He ran a hand through his hair, in frustration. “You didn’t trust Rolling Hills, and you damn sure didn’t trust me. If I told you we had the lien, I was afraid you’d run away from me. Again.” He locked gazes with her. “And I wasn’t going to let that happen again.”

“Baby, it’s okay... I understand.” Before Naomi could finish, Canton leaned toward her, and kissed her softly, lovingly. Slowly he released her

“No matter how many times I told myself it was just a one-night stand, that it was meaningless, I never forgot you. When you came back into my life, it wasn’t a coincidence. It was meant to be. I fell in love with you the moment I met you and the feelings haven’t faded; they only have grown.” He tugged her closer to him and gave her a kiss on her open mouth.

He released her and opened the small box.

The perfectly gorgeous princess-cut royal blue sapphire, her favorite gemstone and one of the colors of her sorority, was surrounded by diamonds, and it nearly blinded her.

She smiled through the tears.

“There is nothing I don’t love about you, Naomi.”

He lifted her hand, and she watched as he brought it to his lips.

She allowed him to slide the ring onto her finger. It fit perfectly. In that moment she knew that just like the ring, the two of them fit together, with as much perfection as the ring on her finger.

The tears now trickled down her cheeks. Naomi felt no need to try to stem their flow.

“I don’t want to go back to dreaming of you, as I did for seven years. The question is, do you love me enough to see past my faults and love me as deeply as I love you?”

She bobbed her head up and down, smiling through the tears. Joy welled up within her. The last two weeks without him in her life had been hell.

She, too, remembered what it was like to think of him, dream of him...and not be with him.

Naomi had, from the time she was a child, prided herself on her ability to communicate.

But now, words failed her.

She stared into the cornflower-blue eyes of a man whom she knew, without doubt, she loved more than anything in the world.

But as she wrapped her arms around him and nodded her head against the strong column of his throat, she heard his loud “hell yeah!” and laughed around her tears.

He pulled her back, his eyes filled with love, and captured her mouth. The toe-curling kiss was over too soon, but she allowed him to lift her and straddle her over his big body as he plopped back on the bed.

Naomi’s last rational thought before he filled her was his sheer...
wildeness
, telling her that it would indeed be a riotous ride at times, living and loving a Wilde.

But it was one wild journey she was looking forward to experiencing, for the rest of her life.
