Sultry Excerpt from “Truth's Heart”

Raven's sudden kiss surprised me. Her lips sealed tight against my mouth. Her blue eyes squeezed shut as she moaned into my lips. I groaned back into the kiss, my body absorbing the warmth of her flesh and the soft feel of her breasts on my chest, only covered by her wet t-shirt and bra.

She was a passionate woman. A warrior. Fearless, amazing, willing to throw herself into danger. She didn't need to be coddled and shielded. She was a woman with the strength to fight at your side, to put her back against mine and face down whatever may come.

My hand stroked down her back, her long, black hair still damp from the rain. I reached the jeans hugging her ass and squeezed, bringing a moan from her lips. I pulled her tight against me. She undulated, grinding on my swelling girth.

We hadn't made love since Haleigh's guest room. The last few days had been flight and grief.

It was so hard to watch Raven's fires die beneath her guilt. She had grown almost listless, her shoulders sagging from her one mistake. I hoped I had reached through to her. Mistakes happened. Tragedy occurred. That was life.

True strength was the ability to carry on despite it. To learn and grow and become a better person. I hoped the kiss meant Raven was rising out of the muck and taking flight again. The drumming rain matched the beating of my heart as I loved my Valkyrie.

“Magnus,” she moaned, breaking the kiss. “I need it. Fire. Warmth. Give it to me.”

“Yes,” I growled as she leaned in and captured my lips in a kiss.

Raven's right hand slipped down my shoulder to my chest. Her fingernails scratched at my skin as she squeezed over my heart. I groaned, the pain adding a splash of excitement to her kiss. Her tongue fenced with mine as she ground herself harder on my fully erect cock.

She broke the kiss, her lips wet, her eyes shining. She had all the beauty of a Nordic shieldmaiden. Strong cheekbones, lush lips, ice-blue eyes. Her black hair made her pale skin almost glow while spots of color blossomed in her cheeks.

Raven let out a purring moan as she leaned in and nipped at my neck. “You're so warm, Magnus. My big wolf.”

Her hands slid down my chest to my stomach while my hands slid up her hips. I found the hem of her t-shirt. She didn't fight as I ripped it off of her and tossed it on the bench beside us. Her hands went instantly to my stomach, her fingers caressing my abs as she worked lower.

To my belt.

Raven had a hungry grin as she slipped off my lap to the concrete floor of the shelter. Behind her, nature's fury raged, as beautiful and passionate as my Valkyrie. The water splashed and rippled as it rolled down the mountainside to the road, dragging debris with it.

My belt came undone. My zipper rasped. Raven's warm hand thrust into my boxers and grasped me. I groaned as I throbbed in her hand. She stroked me as she drew me out. She breathed in, her breasts rising in her white bra, before she leaned in and swirled her tongue around the tip of my cock.

“Raven,” I groaned, my right hand combing through her silky hair, her tresses sliding between my fingers as her tongue circled and traced the frenulum and crown of my dick.

“Mmm,” she purred before sucking the entire tip into her mouth. She sucked hard, aggressive.

My left hand gripped the edge of the wooden bench as my hips rose. I growled as she sucked. There was a hungry need filling Raven. Her eyes flashed up at me, blue and dark as she worked her mouth up and down my shaft. She moaned, the pleasure humming around my sensitive crown.

My balls already boiled. Her aggressiveness made my cock twitch. The ache spread up to the tip as she sucked harder. She bobbed up and down, her cheeks hollowing. I growled again. I couldn't last long. Not after going two days without sex.

“Slow down,” I growled. “It's not a marathon.”

She only sucked harder.

Chapter One

The widowed goddess's aged knees creaked as she rose from the bier of cold ashes that had been her husband Odin. Frigg's shoulders hunched more than ever. Grief weighed down her aged body. The Aesir had not suffered tragedy since their ancient war with the Vanir. Not even their endless skirmishes with the Frost Giants had torn out the heart from Asgard.

Not even Sol's brilliance shining down on the crown of the Yggdrasil, the World Tree that supported all the realms, upon which Asgard rested could wipe the shadow clinging to Frigg's vision. Everything was stained gray to her. She leaned on her cane as she walked wearily to her hall, the cane thunking on the golden path.

Nanna still sat vigil over Baldur's cold pyre. Frigg's beautiful boy had been the loveliest creature in all the worlds. Even Nanna, a radiant woman with hair spun like gold silk, paled to the brilliance that was her husband Baldur. Nanna wept, her clothes torn off and her body smeared with her dead husband's ashes. No goddess was ever more loving or sweet than Nanna.

A love that could survive eons was rare. Frigg cared for her husband. She was used to him. They had grown old and gnarled together, but her passion for him had died a long time ago. They had their lovers, their quarrels, even their century-long feuds.

But they had always come back together.

And now he was gone. Slain by the Valkyrie. By one of his pets. The gods had sworn to bring justice upon Odin's murderer. The Valkyries Brynhilda and Lynette had vowed to return with their traitorous sister's head and to place it upon a pike before Frigg's hall.

The pike was already in place. Frigg paused to peer up at it, envisioning Raven's pretty head surmounting it. Muninn and Huginn would peck the flesh from Raven's face until only a bleached skull remained.

Frigg's hand tightened on her cane before she climbed the steps into her hall. Her blind son Hother sobbed before the threshold. Frigg set her teeth and kept her eyes fixed on her hall's entrance.

“Forgive me, Mother,” he croaked, his empty eyes staring up at Frigg.

No pity stirred in Frigg's heart for her blind son.

“I did not know the javelin would kill him. I was tricked. Please, Mother.”

Anger flared in the goddess. Her cane cracked across Hother's face, splitting his lip. “Is trickery an excuse for killing your brother. You are cursed, Hother. Be gone from my doorstep. If you want my forgiveness, then bring me the head of the man or woman who tricked you.”

Frigg stepped into her hall and slammed the door closed behind her, shutting out the pleas of her son. She never liked Hother. His deformity was blamed on the weakness of her womb. She birthed one strong son and one weak.

I should have strangled him with his umbilical cord.

Her cane echoed through the empty hall, the sound bouncing between the rafters high over head. Every new tap added a new thud to rattle around the building, the sounds merging into one continuous rumble that only ended when she reached her rocking chair beside the hearth.

The fires burned cold.

“The other gods will never avenge me, Mother,” a beautiful voice said.

Shock seized the old goddess's heart. Despite the infirmities of her age, she stood with alacrity, whirring to spot the source of the voice. A tremble raced through her body as she stared at the radiant beauty of her son.

Impossibly, Baldur stood before her, his white-gold hair shining with pure light, a sad smile on his face. Frigg clutched her heart and squeezed her eyes shut before the apparition. She stepped back towards the hearth, shaking her head.

“No, no, you're dead. You can't be him.”

“Mother,” Baldur whispered. “You need to be warned.”

Her eyes cracked open. Her son still stood there. He seemed so solid. The aura of his light was warm on her face. Tears rolled down the crags of her cheeks. Her hand squeezed at her black bodice. She swallowed, then reached out a trembling hand, desperate to touch her son.

“I'm just his shade, Mother,” Baldur whispered. “You need to be ready. Thor, Tyr, and Freyr will disappoint you. None will be able to kill the Valkyrie. Raven will come for you. She won't rest until our entire family is killed.”

“Killed? Are you saying...?”

“She killed me, too, Mother. You know she was there the night I died. Hother cannot tell if the stranger was man or woman. She disguised her voice. She gave him the mistletoe javelin.”

“No,” Frigg shook her head. “She hadn't been awakened yet. Your father—”

“Underestimated her, Mother.” A look of pleading crossed his face. “There is only one beast in the worlds that can kill her. You must unleash Jormungandr.”

“Loki's foul son?” gasped Frigg. The beast went by several foul names: Jormungandr, the Midgard Serpent, the Hunger. The beast was trapped in the roots of the Yggdrasil, the mighty tree that held all the worlds from Midgard, domain of the mortals, to Asgard where the gods dwelled. “You would have me unleash the World Eater?”
