Chapter Seven

T
he plane ride back to Los Angeles was uneventful.  She was sore, tired and felt as if she had been rode hard and put away wet.  A chuckle was let go in the back of her throat when she realized in essence, she had been. Those were two nights in Vegas she would never forget, but now it was back to business.

She let herself into her apartment in Noho and unpacked and washed her things.  Although she had left with six pairs of underwear, she only returned with two.  Nadine knew the Toe Sucker had stolen her pair from the settee in the couple’s room, the others, well, maybe they had been left in his room.

In so many ways she was proud of herself, not for being a whore of course, but for letting go.  There had been no rationalization, no over thinking, no wads of extraneous conversation with him about her goals and dreams.  The past two nights had been about her and a man enjoying each other.  She still didn’t know his name and outside of the photo she had emailed to herself, there was no evidence of her indiscretion. She checked the answering machine.

She still had a job on Monday and Mr. Deasley was looking forward to seeing her back in the office, there was much to get done.  Another call was from her insurance agent that her car had been repaired and the insurance company had mailed her a check.  There was a call from the Santa Monica police department informing her that the charges against her had been dropped and the little old lady had been found to be under the influence.

The cute doctor from the hospital had called to check on her, and said he would love to have her come back in for a follow up.  He paused only to add that hot pink was his favorite color. The messages seem to go on forever.  Jackass boyfriend had also left a missive and said her face should be fixed by now and he wanted to come back.

Her doorbell rang and Felisha and
Bena were at the door with a bottle of wine and a million questions.  She had nothing to say to either about her adventures, but both remarked that she seemed so different.  “I’m not different, just in a different place,” was all she added.  She said little as the two prattled on throughout the evening.  They flirted with the pizza guy who seemed to only have eyes for Nadine. Her friends looked at her again, “Whatever you did or had in Vegas, I need a double dose of it.”

On Monday she returned to the office.  Business suit, chignon at the back of her neck, but with less buttons fastened up to her throat. She was relaxed.  She was in control and to Doris, she apologized to, by giving her a gift card for a free facial.  A quick stop by Gerald’s office to let him know there were no hard feelings but if he ever stepped out of line with her again, she would squash him like a bug.

It was 12:30 and the office assistant asked if she could get anyone some lunch.  Nadine quickly said no that she would be heading out to run some errands. Keys in hand, she made her way to the door but a familiar scent stopped her dead cold. Frozen in her tracks, there was no way in hell HE could be here. Mr. Deasley called her name. “Nadine, I would like for you to meet my brother, Marc.”  She turned to see Mystery Man in the flesh standing in front of her.

Nadine extended her hand, “Pleasure to meet you Mr. Deasley.” Marc took her hand into his and sparks lit up her arm. “I have heard so much about you Nadine,” he smiled, “it is a pleasure to finally meet you.”

She excused herself as her boss began to extol her virtues and how he would not be able to run the company without her. “Nadine is a rare breed, when she commits to an idea or a task, she is all in, and gives it her all.”              Marc only added, “It is rare to find that kind of combination of beauty and commitment.”

Had she not been deep complexioned, she would have red cheeks. “Again, Mr. Deasley, it was a pleasure to meet you, if you would excuse me, I am on my way to lunch.” A quick smile at her boss, her back straight and head held high, she made her way out the door.
