“Actually, I
threw her into the sea first.”

I downed the
rest of my drink and called my driver. When I got to Kaitlyn’s flat, I got out
the car and spoke to the doorman. He called up to Kaitlyn and I took the lift
to her floor.

She stood in
the hallway waiting for me wearing her skinny jeans and a red coat.

“What’s
going on Jamie? It’s nearly eleven o’clock and I was supposed to be spending
the night with Jake.”

“We are
going on a date.” I handed her the flowers that I got from the garage on the
way over here.

“A date? You
dragged me out of bed for the sake of a date. You’ve spent the week over here.”

“I know
something’s going on Kaitlyn. You’re hiding something from me and for tonight I
don’t care. We’ve been hiding still and we don’t need to anymore. I want to
take you on a proper date where we don’t have to hide from reporters or your
family finding out.”

Kaitlyn
smiled. It was real, heart melting smile.

“Did you get
these from a garage?”

“Only the
best for you, sweetheart.”

Chapter
Twelve

Kaitlyn

“So where
are we going exactly?”

“You’ll see.
This is just part one of the midnight date.” Jamie laughed at my frustrated
expression.

“They get to
know.” I pointed at the car full of people. Jamie didn’t think it would be a
good idea for us to be out together without some protection, and he’d also had
a few drinks. This equalled two bodyguards and a driver. I was just thankful
that we wasn’t cramped in a small Corsa and had a large van type vehicle to
relax in.

“We’re
here.”

The two
guards, who I discovered were called Peter and Will, jumped out ahead of us and
walked to the bar. It looked busy but not crowded or rowdy.

“Welcome to
Zinc. I may add, in case anyone tries to tell you otherwise, I was in no way
checking out the barmaid earlier.”

I looked
over to the bar to see a rather trashy looking woman smiling over at Jamie. She
winked at him while she served a customer.

“I may have
suggested Ryan get her number.”

“Poor Ryan.
He didn’t go through with it, did he?”

“Lucky for
him, there was too many people staring at us.”

“I think
there’s more now. How’d you get used to it? It’s insane.”

“You don’t. You
just smile and wave when they annoy you. Sometimes they have the decency to get
embarrassed then. Mostly it just stops you being a jerk in the papers.”

I waved at
the barmaid and gave her a cheesy grin.

“I think I
can do this acting lark. It’s a piece of cake.”

“You just
learnt from the best.”

“Really? I
don’t remember meeting Tom Hanks or Daniel Craig.”

“You’re
hilarious.”

“And don’t I
know it.”

Jamie
ordered us both a drink and we people watched for a while. We kept making up
their life stories. That was until somebody overheard us and may have been
offended. It’s not like we were serious when we said that the guy was an
undercover cop and the girl was a high class prostitute with access to a major
drugs lord. The drugs lord was the one that heard us. He was walking past at
the time and happened to not like the fact we’d made his sister the prostitute.
We left quite quickly after a rushed apology from both of us and a much need
intervention from our babysitters.

“Now, I know
you thought the flowers were classy, but you won’t believe your eyes for the
next part.” Jamie reached past me into my handbag and pulled out my spare
scarf. “I’m going to need you to put this on.”

“I’m good
thanks. I got dressed before we left.”

“Are you
afraid I’m going to mess your hair up?” He teased.

“I didn’t
know you were into groups. At least not publicly.” I stuck my tongue out at him
and the driver laughed.

“Smooth
Kaitlyn. I’ll give you a choice put on the scarf or go for a swim. This isn’t
LA. The Thames isn’t like the ocean on a hot summer morning. It’s dirty and cold
and you really don’t want me to throw you in.”

“Now I know
why you haven’t had a proper girlfriend before. This is really creep talk for a
date.” I turned around so he could cover my eyes properly. The guys in the car
kept making jokes about where we were going. When Jamie gave the driver the
next address he told him that his wife would kill him if he did that on a date.
I had to endure a torturous ten minutes of listening to jokes about strip clubs
and drug dens while Jamie held my hands so I wouldn’t be tempted to sneak a
peek.

“We’re here.
Don’t look.”

I heard the
doors open and felt a rush of cold air.

“Here, hold
onto my arm. Don’t rush. I don’t want to be in the papers for breaking Kaitlyn
Fox’s face because you jumped out the car blindfolded.” I laughed with Jamie as
a slowly got out the car. “Guys can you grab the doors please?”

He guided me
slowly warning me of any steps and people. I heard him shush a group who were
clearly trying not to laugh. I felt the warmth as we walked inside.

“Tada” Jamie
untied the scarf and it slid slowly down my face.

“I love you,
you know that?” I walked up to the counter and ordered my food. “I can’t
believe I’m in McDonalds on date. Any date I’ve been on before, nobody has had
the balls to do something like this.”

“You hate
posh food. I even got you this.” Jamie handed me a gift bag the size of a fist.
I opened it to find a happy meal toy still in its plastic bag.

“Open it
properly.”

I opened the
bag and got out the toy bear.

“Do you make
the connection?”

“Connection
too what?”

“Us. I can’t
believe you were that messed up for your first interview. Did you actually
watch any of it?”

“Yes. You
announced you didn’t have a girlfriend, I sang, you stripped, I threw up in the
toilets.”

“That sounds
like a really bad one night stand. I was on the show for a reason other than to
make you squirm, I was promoting this movie.”

“Let me
guess, you played the bear.”

“You’ll have
to wait and see. I think that’ll have to be our next date.”

We sat
talking for ages; it felt right like nothing else in the world mattered. I
didn’t care that people kept taking our photo or our babysitters never left our
side. I didn’t care when some girl with plastic boobs came and told Jamie she
could ‘show him a real good time’ or that he replied that I already had. The
poor girl looked mortified and left quickly. The drunks on a table behind us
called after the girl and Jamie had our security make sure she got home safely
when one of the drunks got up to follow her.

My phone
rang and I checked my watch. It was gone two and everyone who would usually
call me at this time had a personalised ringtone.

“Hello?”

“Kaitlyn?
It’s Diana.”

“Diana.
What’s up?”

“I’m in the
hospital. I wanted Jake but he’s not answering.”

“I’ll get
him. Which one?”

Diana gave
me the details and I wrote them down on the bag from the toy. Jamie looked
concerned and called the driver.

“Kaitlyn,
are you ok?”

“Jake’s
ex-girlfriend is in hospital. I need to get him and head over there.”

“Sure, I’ll
come with you.”

“There’s no
need. You’ve got a plane to catch and no offence but Diana is a sensitive
issue. Jake broke up with her because of me and the more people there the more
awkward it will be. Could you just drop me at my flat please? I had a great
time tonight, Thank you. Sorry to cut it short.”

Jamie helped
me to the car and we headed back. I sent Dad a text to tell him about Diana.

“You keep
the car, I’ll get a taxi.”

“Are you
sure?”

“Its fine
but I get to keep one of the guys.” He joked as Peter hugged him.

“I think you
get Peter, but I’m keeping Will for myself.”

“Call me
when you get to the hospital.”

I walked
into the flat and went straight to Jake’s room. It was a complete mess and Jake
just sat in the middle of it all on the floor. His Phone was in his hand but he
didn’t move to answer it when it rang.

“It’s
happening all over again Kaitlyn.”

I went to
the kitchen and dialled Aaron.

“Kaitlyn?
Are you ok?”

“Diana is in
the hospital, nothing too serious but Jake’s in a state.”

“I’ll call
the doctor and your Dad. Is Jamie with you?”

“No but Will
the security guy is here.”

“Get him to
take you and Jake to the hospital, we’ll meet you there.”

“Thanks
Aaron.”

Jamie

I was
knackered on the flight home. I must have slept for at least eight of the ten
hours. I stayed up until Kaitlyn text me that she was at the hospital with Jake
and her Dad. Diana had slipped and hit her head because her kitchen flooded
slightly and she would be allowed home either later today or tomorrow as long
as she didn’t show any signs of concussion. Kaitlyn didn’t say much else but
she seemed more like her old self again. She wasn’t being fake with me and she
seemed genuinely concerned about Diana. It was weird heading home without
Graham pestering me because I had to be on set in five hours and I hadn’t
prepared or freshened myself up. I stopped off at home for a shower and then
when straight out the door again. I text Kaitlyn to check on her and Diana and
she replied that she was good. She said she had to do some stuff with Wayne and
Aaron and she’d give me a ring when I finished on set.

I finished
the scenes and was given my final filming schedule to finish up the movie. I
only had to do four days a week for the next month and I’d be free to go to
England for three weeks before returning to the states for several small TV
roles. At home, I went for a swim and took another shower before crashing for a
couple of hours. I hadn’t heard from Kaitlyn but when I checked my phone, I
only had voicemails from Graham. I deleted them all without listening and went
to find something in my fridge to eat that wouldn’t kill me because it was a
week past its expiration date but failed. I resorted to my favourite option of
Chinese takeaway. While I was giving my order for delivery I noticed the
answerphone flashing. I listened to Graham and deleted it without paying
attention. I did the same to the next but on the final message he just said
‘Kaitlyn’ then left a pause. It caught my attention so I sat down and listened
properly.

‘I know you
don’t want to talk to me, and I’m not asking you too. I heard something about
Kaitlyn earlier. You need to talk to her. We both know she’s as screwed up as
any other Hollywood robot and you need to talk to her about it. They’re trying
to publish this article about her but Aaron got an injunction. She’s known in
the States now so they’re going to publish there instead. Trust me you want to
hear it from her. Also I got a few numbers of agents you can use. You don’t
need me anymore kid, I make people, but you’re already made. You need your life
now and I get that. Give us a call sometime.’

I listened
to it again. When my Chinese arrived I shoved it on the kitchen counter and
gave Kaitlyn a ring. She didn’t answer.
It’s Kaitlyn. I’m not here right
now. Leave me a message and I’ll get back to you, thanks.

“Hey
Kaitlyn. I think we need to talk. Graham says that they’re going to print an
article about you. What’s going on Kaitlyn? What are you hiding? Well ring me
when you get this. Love you.”

I ate half
my rice and a spare rib then went back to bed for a bit. I woke up when my
phone bleeped and I groggily checked it.

Foxy
Jones- Jake’s not well. I can’t leave yet. I’ll talk when I fly out.

Me- What
do you mean?

Foxy
Jones- I’ll probably get a plane tomorrow if Jake’s better. I’ll give you the
flight details. Can you pick me up from the airport?

After
sleeping in for a few hours I got dressed and checked my emails and post for
any events I needed to attend. I spotted an older email inviting me to a high
school fate. I saw that Graham had turned them down giving them the standard
brush off. He knew that I liked to attend theses if I could. Not only had I
missed this sort of thing myself because of acting commitments but I’d seen a
lot of messed up teens who might actually listen to someone like me. I searched
the school online. It was only an hour away so I grabbed the keys for my
Lamborghini and left right away. My head was still on British time and had to
stop to grab a strong coffee.

The school
was medium sized. The car park was full and I had to battle with a motorbike to
grab a semi-decent space. I didn’t doubt that I would be phoning my insurance
company after this.
