Katie Harper was living the life that she never really wanted. Working as a waitress for below the minimum wage, serving ungrateful customers and having no real prospects ahead of her.

But little did she know, she was
SPECIAL.

Werewolf Shane Blackwood had been on the run ever since his family was murdered. There were mysterious forces out to kill him and to make matters worse, Shane had lost his ability to shift.

That was until, Shane met Katie. There was something about Katie's presence that made him regain his shifting abilities and he was able to unleash his Alpha once again. Now he had her, he knew he could never lose her.

It was clear that Katie was already special to Shane but she was about to become more special to him in ways she could never have imagined...

CHAPTER ONE

She looked at the wall and wondered if this was what it was like to slowly die and not really know it. Was this that whole boiling a frog thing? People talked about how you could slowly turn up the heat of a pot with a frog in it until it was boiling and the frog would never know that it was dying. Was that real? Or was it some kind of very accurate metaphor for her life right now? Because right now, as she looked at the wall, listening to the clatter of plates and the clanking of silverware over the din of conversation, Katie was fairly certain that she was slowly dying.

Big Mikey’s was the kind of restaurant that only men came to and weird families that thought that this was the kind of thing that normal families went to. She looked around at the lunchtime patrons and she knew that all of these people were the wrong kind of people to have in her life. She didn’t want to get to know any of them and she didn’t want to befriend any more regulars. She knew that there were certain men that she needed to flirt with and that she needed to keep happy so they tipped well, but she hated that. She hated all of it. They were usually pervy creeps and she didn’t want to spend a second longer around them than she absolutely had to. But, she’d smile and laugh at their crass or witless jokes, brush their arms with her hand and toss her hair just like they always wanted.

It was part of the job. That was what she told herself. Mikey only hired women who he found to be consistently fit, attractive, and a bit skanky. In fact, Big Mikey’s was the kind of place you went because you had the figure to strip, but you weren’t quite ready to degrade yourself that much.

You were just comfortable wearing short shorts where your ass hung out and tight tops that didn’t leave anything to the imagination. Heck, whenever there was a holiday of any kind approaching, she was practically given instructions to wear lingerie to work. It was the kind of place that no one ever really wanted to work, but you ended up working there because you just couldn’t say no to that kind of money.

It was the kind of money that grinned at you and sucked you in, whether or not you had the will or the strength to say no to it. Because honestly, no one ever had the desire to say no to that kind of money. That would just be stupid. That was the kind of stupid that no one truly was.

Truthfully, there was nothing about Big Mikey’s that was actually kosher or even right. In fact, the men who came into Big Mikey’s were usually men wearing hats and sunglasses, their wives and girlfriends completely oblivious to where they were actually eating lunch or dinner.  It was a sanctuary for the wandering eyes and the discontented pervert. She wasn’t someone to judge, because she was a part of all of this, but it was disappointing.

The lights were dim, the TV screens were all turned to some kind of sporting event, the music was loud enough to keep the eavesdropper away, and there were enough pretty women walking around in hardly anything to keep people from noticing others around them. It was a haven for them.

So, whenever someone wanted a greasy burger and some fries, they came to Big Mikey’s as an excuse or a pretense so they could ogle whoever was on shift. The sad thing was that all of the regulars had their girls that they liked best and Katie Harper was on a lot of the top lists of most of them. Sure, she would say something if they grabbed her ass or whistled at her when the other girls wouldn’t, but it was usually worth it to them.

To get a chunk of her firm, squat, perfect ass in their fingers, that was something they all wanted. She wished that there was something more that she could do to get them to keep their hands off of her, but it was part of the job. If you wanted good tips, you had to be slightly tolerant toward that kind of thing. You had to be willing to let people get a little close, even though it may be uncomfortable.

Thankfully, today was a slow day and Katie was certain that it was going to be a brief lull, like the calm before the storm. There was never a slow shift at Big Mikey’s. There was always something on the horizon and though it might have been a slow lunch and a quiet afternoon, no doubt there was some kind of game coming up that was going to draw all of the crowds, or so they would claim. She looked out the window and prayed that there was more to all of this than what she was seeing.

There had to be more to this life than what she knew and what she was living in. There had to be more than lies, lust, and greed in the world and right now, there was very little around her that was pointing to the contrary. That made her sad and as she looked hopefully out the window, she felt like there was nothing to really get her excited anymore.

Katie was the girl who had gone out into her backyard, looking for fairies and thinking that the fireflies were something magical and mystical. She used to think that animals would talk when there were no people around and she hoped that there were angels among them. She had always believed in the supernatural and that kind of made her a helpless romantic. You didn’t believe in that sort of thing and remain a cold-hearted cynic.

This made her a target for her friends. Whenever they had been drinking, they would ask her about conspiracy theories or myths that she was always a little too forthcoming to tell them about, after she’d had a drink or two. She knew that she wasn’t converting them to her ideas or the beliefs that there were UFOs or that they were under demonic possession, but it was always enough to get them to wonder.

She looked across the bar where she was hanging out, watching Vance watch a basketball game on the TV with one of the patrons at the bar. He was one of three people at the bar and the only one who seemed interested in doing anything other than scowling into his drink. Katie smiled at the sight and looked back out the window, watching cars pass on the highway.

April was working today and she was one of Katie’s friends who always made her wonder if she was actually a friend or if she was a secret enemy in hiding. April always had a sharp tongue and a bitter response to everything that Katie said, but she’d always follow it with a loud burst of laughter that made Katie think that she was covering for her unbridled rudeness. April walked over to the bar and slumped onto a stool, looking around for any signs of Wyatt, their manager.

“He’s in the office,” Katie told her, wrapping silverware in napkins and binding them with green tape with Big Mikey’s logo on it.

“Phew,” April said. It was strange to hear her act like she’d been on her feet all day and working too much. They’d had like four tables each so far and they were already three hours deep in their shift. April was the kind of girl who never really liked to put a lot of work into anything that she did.

She knew that there was something specifically dark inside of April, but her intolerance to anything that required work was starting to catch up to her. Her platinum blonde hair and heavy makeup couldn’t hide the weight she was starting to carry in her cheeks and neck, and her body was starting to remind her that she was a couple years out of college already and needed to start taking better care of herself.

Katie didn’t understand that. She had been religious about her health since she was in high school. She knew that in a matter of time, her body was going to betray her and she was going to start putting on cellulite like it was a fashionable thing to do. She wasn’t about to end up like her mother and that was why she’d always taken up eating healthy and worked as hard as she could to maintain the body that had made her famous in high school and ever since she’d left home. She wasn’t about to give that up now. Back when she couldn’t afford a gym membership, she still kept in shape the best that she could with body weight exercises.

Her body was something to behold and it was easily the reason why she was so popular. Honestly, there were a lot of girls who had earned the title of 'butter face' by the regulars and April was one of them because she didn’t take care of herself.

Granted, she wasn’t naturally gifted with Katie’s God-given beauty and her willpower to make sure that she was in great shape and maintain a body that every man in the restaurant would want. It had made her a very happy girl because it let her enjoy a life that she semi-appreciated at this point in her life. Tips were good for buying drinks, paying rent, and making sure that she could pay for everything that she wanted and needed.

Her legs were long and she had often joked that she was all legs because of how tall she was and how her legs just wouldn’t quit, and were thinned and honed by running and lifting.

Her ass was fresh and had a bounce to it that men loved to stop and marvel at as she walked by, her hips swaying to a rhythm that they only dreamed of actually hearing and being a part of. Her stomach was toned and her abs showed under her tight shirt that showed it off, letting the men imagine what it would be like to take a shot out of her belly button.

As for her breasts, they were large and were the one thing that she could honestly thank her overweight mother for. She had been an early bloomer when it came to her breasts and when they stopped growing, she was often told that they were the perfect size. They were as large as she could handle while being proportional.

As for her shoulders and arms, they were sculpted from the gym and she would never give up on them. Great arms were the gift that kept on giving.

As for her face, her features were strong and smooth. Her cheekbones were high and her chin was pointed, framing her perfect lips that men fantasized about kissing and tasting. Her nose wasn’t large and it wasn’t shaped strangely, but rather the kind of nose that you never thought about changing, which she found out was a gift in and of itself.

Her eyes were large and brown, and always looked curious and emoted everything that she thought. There was no subtlety and cunning in her expressions because her eyes were always giving up whatever it was that she was thinking.

Her hair was a black asymmetrical bob that was shorter in the back than it was in the front, always taken care of and always presented well. She didn’t believe that you could just throw your hair in a ponytail and call it good. Looking good was what made this job worth it and she was going to get every nickel out of it.

She was easily the most attractive of her friends, but she didn’t have the bold personality that made her unbearable. In fact, she was usually the most quiet and contemplative of their friends. It was something unfathomable to the rather bitter and jealous April who would wreak havoc upon the world if she had the kind of body that she could flaunt and work with to her own dark intentions.

Chloe, the new hostess, greeted a pair of guys who came in through the front door and looked around as they took their sunglasses off. Katie already knew they were contractors and that they weren’t going to tip well. That meant that she was going to have to really play along if she wanted something to even be close to decent for her. It should be worth it, after all. She didn’t want to waste her time and she didn’t want to ruin whatever chances she had going for her.

She let out a sigh and watched as Chloe took them into her section, just like she knew she would. Chloe was all about customer service and actually believed in this job that she’d only had for a week or two. Soon, that naiveté would fade and she’d stop caring.

Truthfully, April would probably have been more appropriate for these guys. She was certain that she was going to find her husband here and she wanted to ask April if she really thought that one through.

“Back at it,” Katie said, letting out a sigh and stacking the silverware bundles next to the tray and walked around the bar, gently touching Vance on the shoulder to let him know that she was passing behind him.

Making her way toward their table, she reached into her apron and watched the one with a blonde goatee looking at her, his eyes defiling her body as she walked toward him. She pushed the discomfort out of her mind and knew that she was asking for this when she was working here.

She had to take that much responsibility for her actions. When he let out a long whistle as she approached and burst out laughing as he slouched there in the booth, she tried her hardest to avoid coiling her fingers into fists. She just smiled and grit her teeth together.

“Afternoon, gentlemen,” she said with a cheery tone in her voice that had been entirely fabricated for assholes like them. They were both men who looked like they belonged out on a construction site and they looked like they had bought the douche handbook and studied it vigorously. “My name’s Candy,” she lied to them. She never gave out her real name and she wasn’t about to give it to these creeps. They eyed each other, giving in to the exact thought that she wanted them to think.

If they thought that she was a step away from being a stripper and maybe willing to give them a little more, then they were willing to tip better to try and impress her. It worked ninety five percent of the time. “Anything I can get started for you? Appetizers? Drinks?”
