Irish moss st: Rows 1 & 2: *kl, p1* repeat from * to * to the end of row Rows 3 & 4: *pl, kl* repeat from * to * to the end of row

Garter st: Knit every row

Random garter and stockinette st: Insert rows of purl stitches in the stockinette st fabric as follows:

Row 1: Knit across
Row 2: Purl across
Row 3: K
Rows 4-6: P
Row 7: K
Rows 8-10: K
Rows 11-13: K
Rows 14-16: P
Row 17: K
Row 18: P
Rows 19-20: K

INSTRUCTIONS:

Back:
With smaller needles, CO 52 (54, 58, 62) sts. Work in kl, p1 rib for ½" ending on a WS row. Change to larger needles and work in pattern stitch until work measures 14 (14½, 15, 15½) inches or desired length from the beginning to the armhole, ending on WS row.

Armhole Shaping:
Continue in your pattern and
at the same time,
shape armhole as follows: For Small and Medium: BO 2 sts at beginning of next 2 rows.

Next row (RS): SSK, work to last 2 sts, k2tog.

Next row (WS): Work in pattern stitch.

Repeat last two rows 2 times more.

For Large and X-Large: BO 2 sts at beginning of next 4 rows. Next row (RS): SSK, work to last 2 sts, k2tog.

Next row (WS): Work in pattern. Repeat last two rows once more. [42 (44, 48, 50) sts remain.]

Continue for All Sizes: Continue in pattern stitch until armhole measures 8 (9, 9½, 9¾) inches, ending on WS row.

Neck Shaping:
Next Row (RS): Work 14 (14, 16, 16) sts in pattern stitch, join 2nd ball of yarn and BO center 14 (16, 16, 18) sts. Work remaining 14 (14, 16, 16) sts in pattern stitch. Work both sides at once. Next Row (WS): For Small and Medium: Work one row of each shoulder in pattern stitch. For Large, X-Large: Dec 1 St at each neck edge.

Next Row (RS): Continue for All Sizes: Dec 1 st at each neck edge. Next Row (WS): BO remaining 13 (13, 14, 14) sts on each shoulder.

Front:
Work same as back, including armhole shaping, until armhole measures 6½ (7, 7½, 7¾) inches, ending on a WS row.

Neck Shaping:
Next Row (RS): Work 18 (18, 18, 19) sts in pattern stitch; join a 2nd ball of yarn and BO center 6 (8, 10, 12) sts; work remaining 18 (18, 18, 19) sts in pattern stitch. From this point, you will work both shoulders at once, as follows:

Next Row (WS): Work in pattern stitch. BO 2 sts at each neck edge, once.

Next Row (RS): Dec 1 st at each neck edge.

Next Row (WS): Work in pattern stitch.

Repeat last two rows 2 (2, 1, 1) times more, until 13 (13, 14, 14) sts remain on each side. Continue in pattern stitch until front measures the same as the back. BO remaining sts.

Sleeves:
With smaller needles CO 40 (42, 44, 49) sts. Work in kl, pl rib for ½". Change to larger needles and work in pattern stitch until work measures 1½ (1½, 2, 2) inches from beginning, ending on WS row.

Sleeve Cap Shaping:
Continue in pattern, and
at the same time,
shape sleeve cap as follows: BO 2 sts at the beginning of the next 2 (2, 4, 4) rows.

Next Row (RS) (Dec): Ssk, work in pattern to last 2 sts, k2tog.

Repeat dec row every 4th row 2 (2, 1, 1) times more, until 28 (32, 34, 35) sts remain. BO 2 sts at the beginning of next 10 (10, 10, 12) rows.

BO remaining 10 (10, 10, 13) sts.

Finishing:
Sew front to back at shoulders. Set-in and sew sleeves to body. Sew side and sleeve seams.

Neckband:
With smaller, 16-inch circular needles, and RS facing, pick-up and knit 62 (64, 68, 70) sts around the neck. Join in the round and work in kl, pl ribbing for 4 rows.

Next Row: BO in rib pattern.

Sew in all loose ends.

Yummy Chocolate Cake

2 cups sugar
1¾ cups flour (add +/- tablespoon extra for altitude)
¾ cup cocoa
1½ teaspoons baking soda
1½ teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
2 eggs
1 cup whole milk
½ cup vegetable oil
2 teaspoons vanilla
1 cup boiling water

Heat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease three cake pans.

Stir together sugar, flour, cocoa, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Then add eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla. Beat on medium speed for 2 minutes. Stir in boiling water. Pour batter into cake pans.

Bake 30 to 35 minutes, until knife comes out clean. Cool cake in pans on wire racks for 10 minutes before removing from pans. Continue to cool cake layers on racks.

Frosting

1 stick butter, melted
⅔ cup cocoa
3 cups powdered sugar
⅓ cup milk
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 pint whipping cream, whipped frothy with vanilla and sugar to taste

Beat together butter, cocoa, powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla until thickened. Add whipped cream as you see fit. You know what to do next—frost the cake! Now, enjoy!
