Chapter 1

Tanek scowled as he walked though
Bite Me,
the bar he used to love so much. It was a popular spot for supernaturals, right on Bourbon Street. He used to enjoy getting up each evening and coming to work. Now it just reminded him of yet another failure. His mood was foul, and he had no desire to change it. Ever since Gretchen, a former employee, broke his heart by choosing another man over him. He thought she was going to be different; she seemed sweet and he thought he could grow to love her. He was bitter and was fine with wallowing in his misery.

Tanek decided he just wasn’t meant to be happy. Why else would every woman he ever opened his heart to betray him in one way or another?

Tanek saw Laya
Describe who Laya is
approach. She was an employee, and a great worker. She was a hot little thing with her blond hair and generous curves, but even the thought of bedding another woman held little interest to him.

“Good evening, Laya. I hope the customers are tipping well and behaving themselves.”

“Of course, but I wanted to talk to you privately. If that’s okay?” She whispered the last part as if she was trying to hide something.

Tanek nodded and led Laya into his private office. The room was much quieter than the rest of the bar. It had a comfortable feel with soft lighting and a definite man cave feel, with dark wood and leather furniture. The room smelled of sandalwood and a nice spicy men’s cologne. Tanek sat at his old mahogany desk. He had a soft spot for antiques, probably due to his older than dirt age, and was quite proud of his antique furniture. He sat and waited for Laya to sit.

“Now what can I do for my favorite employee?”

“Well, all the employees got together and nominated me to come talk to you about a certain situation,” she said nervously.

Tanek listened, but he had a bad feeling he knew where this was going. Had he been that obvious in his miserable disposition? If he had, that was unacceptable and he needed to get this resolved immediately.

“We, all the employees that is, especially me, we think you are the best boss ever. I’ve heard such bad things about vampires before working for you. I tell everyone I know what a great boss you are. I mean, when my gran had her hip replaced, you gave me the extra time off and sent her flowers.”

Tanek interrupted. “Laya, please get to the point. I may be immortal, but I don’t have all day," he said sarcastically.

Laya took a deep breath and began. “I know Gretchen hurt you, but we can’t stand to see your grumpy face around the club anymore; you need to move on. The local Vampire Association is having a mixer, and I think you should go. Maybe meet some new friends, maybe get some vampire ass to help take your mind off Gretchen. And for the record, Gretchen may be my friend, but she was a jerk to you.”

Tanek looked at the colorful flier Laya put on his desk. He normally would avoid those things like the black plague, which he remembered quite well. These things always seemed so forced, and vampires were not usually very social. Perhaps he needed to go just to make the employees think he was better so they would stop worrying.

“I will think about it, Laya. I appreciate your concern. Please tell the others I will try to be more pleasant and less grumpy in the future,” he said, smiling his best fake smile. She looked at him sideways… perhaps the smile was a bit much.

Laya smiled as she stood up, but instead of leaving, she leaned over and hugged him. He hoped this would pacify her and she would now leave him to be miserable alone. He continued standing until she finally left. Tanek sat back down and rubbed his forehead in frustration. He picked up the flier looking at the glossy finish and the all too predictable old English font with the black and red color scheme. Maybe it wouldn’t be that bad, getting involved with the Vampire community again. Maybe he just needed something other than the bar to occupy his time.

Tanek sat back and turned on his laptop, he answered a few emails and decided to get caught up with some paperwork. He hated anything to do with the accounting of the business and considered hiring an office assistant. He had always done things on his own and quite efficiently but maybe it was time to get a little help. He logged onto several employment websites and found one just for Vampires He placed an ad and gave an email address only; that way anyone who couldn’t write a proper email could be eliminated immediately. Nothing bugged him more than finding

, and other texting language in business emails.

Once that was finished, Tanek realized it was nearly 3:00 a.m. and he still needed to feed, so he walked into the busy club. It would seem odd to most, but he made sure the club stayed open until dawn to accommodate all his fellow vampires. The music was loud and thumping, and Laya and the other waitresses were running around frantically serving the customers that sat at tables. He sat at the bar and watched the humans and paranormals dance to the music.

It was that moment he noticed a vampire he hadn’t seen before. She immediately captivated his attention. She was average height with midnight black hair, not that unusual for a vampire, but her eyes spoke to him. They were such a deep entrancing blue; it was like looking into the sea. And those lips were just meant to be kissed. He couldn’t help but stare. The woman was so beautiful. Her dress was a deep violet and sat just past the knee, and it hugged all her womanly curves in just the right way.

She sat alone at a table drinking until Tanek saw a human male approach and she walked with him to the dance floor. Tanek sat at the bar and watched her dance with the man. She smiled at him, and Tanek grumbled and wanted it to be him on the dance floor. He could’nt believe he was actually contemplating approaching her, after what happened with Gretchen how could he ever trust another woman. He had a thought … maybe if Laya saw him having a good time everyone would back off.

Tanek walked over to the woman. “Mind if I have this dance?” Tanek asked her.

She stopped dancing and looked at him. “I don’t think so, I’d rather not.”

He couldn’t believe she was turning him down. Tanek was not used to being turned down, and he wasn’t going to let it happen. Tanek looked into the eyes of the human, giving him the suggestion to dance with someone else. He walked away with a blank look on his face. “Now as I was saying: my name is Tanek Koja, and what is yours?”
