Don gave him an odd look. “Of
course there is. It’s a vegetarian curry.”

Stunned, Ricky stared at him for a
few seconds. “You mean…there’s no meat in there?”

Annoyance crossed the Beta’s
features. “I just said
it’s
vegetarian didn’t I? Do I
have to list all the damn ingredients?
Fine.
There’s
carrots, leeks, potatoes
— ”

Ricky cut him off, his voice grew
unsteady, “and you did this for me?”

“Fuck, little Omega. Don’t tell me
you’re going to cry again.” Don turned the stove off to look at him.

Ricky sniffed. “I’m not going to
cry, you fucking asshole.”

Anger briefly rose, but it quickly
faded with the other overwhelming emotions mauling him from the inside. Damn it
all. If he craned his head, would he see the scarred little dining table all
set for two?

Ricky did and that only worsened
the tight fist clutching his insides. Judging from the mismatched plates,
utensils and chipped mugs, it looked like Don was the kind of guy who didn’t
eat at the table often. He looked more like a take-out kind of guy who seldom
brought groceries.

Why
does he have to be so fucking nice? He’s just making it harder for both of us.

“I just thought it would be
more tasty
if I threw in some curry powder instead of
shoving all those veggies into the oven.” It didn’t escape Ricky the way Don
made a face when he said “veggies.”

Ricky swallowed and tried to
explain his reaction. “It just took me by surprise. No one has ever done
anything like this for me before.”

“Yeah?”
Don scratched his head, glancing at the pot then the table.
“Too
much, huh?”

Great.
Now I’ve made him embarrassed.

“Not at all,” Ricky quickly said.

He reached out to awkwardly pat the
other man’s bare shoulder. It was a mistake. Just the mere touch of his sweat
soaked skin on his fingers made things inside him tighten and his cock stir.
The thought of ripping off that thin apron and putting his mouth around Don’s
dark nipples, to feel his hands slide across his hard flesh, nearly made him
squirm. His wolf angrily paced its metaphysical cage, snarling with impatience.
Unlike Ricky, the wolf had no patience for human games. Its needs were simple
and what it wanted was its mate to fuck him.

It was getting harder and harder to
reel in his control, and Ricky knew he didn’t have much of it left if this went
on. Was it so horrible to want this though, when every inch of him practically
screamed with need?

“Let’s eat then. Just let me get a
clean shirt.”

****

Having donned a clean white shirt,
Don sat opposite him at the table, occasionally making a face as he angrily
shoved more vegetables into his mouth.

“Look, if they’re so awful then
stop eating. I’ll eat them all,” Ricky pointed out.

He wasn’t lying. The curry wasn’t
actually half-bad and he liked the mix of rich spices on his tongue. Knowing it
was the sexy carnivore in front of him that made it, only made the taste more
heavenly.

“I need to train my body. Get used
to the taste of this shit.” Don stabbed a carrot with his fork and held it up
to his face.

It felt like something heavy was
rammed into Ricky at those words.
Bloody hell.
What does
he mean by that?

“Why?” The word came out as a
whisper, but Don heard it.

Munching one end of the carrot, he
looked at Ricky thoughtfully. Ricky felt the weight of his gaze and his words.
His eyes weren’t laughing or teasing, they were completely
dead serious. Ricky’s own wolf stopped pacing to look back at him, amber gaze
defiant, daring him to ask the single damning question.

Gaining more courage, Ricky took a
breath and asked, “Why do you need to get used to the taste of vegetables?”

Don only smiled and his heart
nearly dropped at that knowing smile.
“Why are you asking
when you know the answer to your own question, little Omega?”

Chapter Three

Wrapped possessively around the
slender man in front of him, Don was loath to get up and answer his damn phone.
When it vibrated noisily on his dresser again, he nuzzled Ricky’s neck once
before finally getting out of bed.

“What?” he growled into the phone.

“Beta, you told me to call you once
there’s an update.” The submissive wolf on the other end of the line sounded
cautious. “Terrence just confirmed the location of the strange wolf sniffing
around our borders. The only problem is
,
he hasn’t
exactly crossed New Haven territory.”

Don was entirely wide-awake.
Terrence was another enforcer for the pack, but Derrick relayed word that this
was Don’s kill so the others respectfully kept their distance.

“Tell Terrence thanks, and I’ll
deal with it.” Don cut the connection and looked at Ricky.

Snuggled comfortably in his sheets,
the Omega looked happy to be lost in the realm of dreams. He had a sneaking
suspicion only the end of the world would wake him. All good, considering Ricky
didn’t know Don was about to end his worst nightmare.

Not bothering with clothes, Don
discarded his human skin as soon as he was outside. The only piece of clothing
he bothered keeping was Ricky’s shirt and it was tied around his neck. Ricky’s
scent still lingered on the shirt around his neck, but it wasn’t just his scent
there and the intruder would know it.

The outsider was smart enough to
stay off New Haven land. Any shifter knew they either present themselves openly
to Carlos or risked being hunted down, but a shifter’s animal half often got
the better of his human half when important matters were involved. Especially
when mates were involved, and Ricky’s scent now mixed with his. Don’s mission
was simple enough. Once the outsider knew Ricky no longer solely belonged to
him, he’d become enraged, and then it would be easy enough for Don to trick him
into entering New Haven territory.

Eager to get back to bed and to
Ricky, Don sprinted through the woods until he was at the borders of the town.
He slowed down, using the dark foliage to hide his striking white fur.

An old black Lexus with its lights
off was parked at the side of the road just before the “Welcome to New Haven”
sign. Leaning against the body of the car was a tall, bald and broad shouldered
man covered in tribal tattoos. He was nursing a smoke and tapping his foot
impatiently on the gravel.

A snarl threatened to emerge from
Don’s muzzle, but he kept it in. The other wolf didn’t smell right. He’d
smelled tainted. Don could practically smell the cruelty wafting off him. There
was no mistaking him.
So this is
Clive.
Don didn’t need to know the finer
details of what this wolf did to Ricky. It was clear enough in the way the
Omega reacted when they first met. Knowing it might lead to his death, Ricky
agreed to spy on the New Haven pack just to get away from this man.

Clive’s face snapped to attention.
He dropped his cigar, straightened his posture and his eyes scanned the road.
He sniffed the air and then his expression relaxed.

“Ricky is that you? Come out, I’m
not angry with you,” Clive said in a voice that reminded Don of a serial killer
coaxing his prey.

Don remained where he was,
crouching in the bushes, and waiting for the opportunity to strike.

“I said come out here, bitch. The
longer you make me wait, the more you’ll get it worse,” Clive growled, cracking
his knuckles.

He began to walk over to where Don
was hiding. Don’s fur prickled.

“Don’t make me drag you out here.”
Clive sniffed again and anger rippled across his features as the realization
dawned on him that Ricky no longer belonged to him. “What’s that I smell on
you? You let a New Haven wolf touch you, bitch?”

All of Don’s muscles tensed in
anticipation. His jaws couldn’t wait to feel Clive’s neck underneath it.

“I think you’ve forgotten, Ricky.
You’re my fucking bitch and you’ll only fuck whoever I tell you to.”

Clive was still a few meters from
him, but Don leaped, teeth snapping and claws extended. His human half caved in
to the instincts of his beast, and his beast caved in to its wrath. Sudden
fright crossed Clive’s face. He took a terrified step backwards, his skin
rippling with the change, but Don was on him in seconds.

He collided with the repugnant
outsider, his claws sinking and raking across flesh. The shifter beneath him
howled in pain, the pain disrupting his concentration and his attempted shift.
Don locked his powerful jaws around Clive’s neck and blood sprayed everywhere.
Within seconds Clive’s limbs stopped failing uselessly. He didn’t deserve the
quick death, but Don wasn’t cruel.

Amber eyes peered from the bushes,
but only one large reddish wolf was brave enough to trot to him.
Derrick.
Don wasn’t surprised. He
must’ve looked out of control in his fury. A friendly rumble came from Derrick.
Don only swatted the big red with his paw as if to say. “It’s over.”

Shifting back to human form, Derrick
bent over the corpse to examine it. One large hand ruffled Don’s ears. Don
snarled, but Derrick only laughed.

“We’ll take care of the rest. You
go back to your vegan mate,” Derrick teased.

Don howled his thanks and ran back
towards the direction of New Haven where his mate awaited him.

“Where did you go?” Ricky’s
demanding voice pierced his cloud of self-satisfaction.

The Omega stood in front of him,
wearing only one of his cotton shirts, looking disheveled but very much awake.

Don froze in the doorway. He was
nude and still covered in blood.

“Oh my God, what happened? Are you
hurt?” The little Omega was suddenly a flurry of movement around him, panic and
worry on his face. Don had to grab hold of his wrists to calm him down.

“Ricky, I’m fine. Just headed out
to take care of a little problem,” Don explained.

It only occurred to him how the
other wolf might take him killing his mate the wrong way. Unease filled him and
Don held his breath, certain Ricky would catch Clive’s scent on him in a matter
of seconds. Expecting an outburst, he steeled himself, but Ricky only flung
himself against him. Tightly wrapping his arms around Don, the Omega buried his
head into his chest.

“Don’t ever worry me like that
again, asshole,” Ricky croaked weakly, and then Don felt his body suddenly
tense.

A long silence passed before Ricky
spoke again, “Why do you have Clive’s scent all over you, and is that my shirt
tied around your neck?”

The Omega parted from him and Don
suddenly missed his warmth. Not just his warmth, but Don was itching to finally
claim his mate the proper way. It took all of his self-preservation to prevent
himself from simply bending Ricky over the kitchen counter to fuck him hours
ago, and both he and his wolf could no longer wait. The great white beast
inside him howled, thumping its tail impatiently.
Time to claim our mate, why aren’t we
claiming our mate?
Don could imagine it asking.

“Talk first, then fuck later,” Don
muttered, unaware he said the words out loud.

“What?” Ricky sounded indignant.

The Omega actually shoved him away
and began bearing down on him like a little poodle attempting to scare off a
German Shepard. He jabbed a threatening finger into Don’s chest.

“Talk first and fuck later? What
the hell, Don. I was asking you a damn question and you’re going to answer it.”

Don grabbed his wrists again,
feeling Ricky’s pulse jump at the mere contact. The other man swallowed
nervously.

“You’re making demands on me now,
little Omega?”

“Yeah,” Ricky managed, fixing a
glare at him. “You think you look threatening, do you, with a scarf still
wrapped around your neck? If you want to know, you look just like one of those
big dogs in those doggie commercials.”

Don easily silenced him by mashing
his lips against Ricky’s half-opened mouth. “I’m sorry.”

“W-what?”
Ricky sounded dazed. His eyes dropped from Don’s lips to his chest and a hungry
look appeared in his eyes.

“I’m sorry I killed Clive. Actually
I’m not sorry at all. The bastard deserved it,” Don said bluntly, watching
Ricky’s confused face change to anger, then to relief, and back to anger again.
He steeled himself for his accusing words. After all, Don still stole Ricky
away from his mate, abusive though his previous mate may be.

“You could’ve at least told me what
you intended to do instead of worrying me all night!” Ricky blurted, anger
quickly dissipating when Don kissed him again.

The other man’s taste and warmth
speared though him. Don sucked on Ricky’s bottom lip, liking how the other man
leaned into him in surrender. Their tongues dueled and tangled until they had
to part to gasp for air.

“You were worrying all night?” Don
asked, amused at Ricky’s panting face.

“Yeah I
was,
asshole.” Ricky looked down, and a blush crept to his cheeks and the sides of
his face at the sight of Don’s half-erect cock. He bit his lip, looking
undecided.

“Enough talking,” Don said,
deciding for him. “Take off your clothes.”

****

Ricky barely heard Don’s command.
His head was still reeling with the news Clive was dead. It felt like a
tremendous weight had been lifted off his shoulders. Clive had always been on
his heels like a vampire intent on bleeding him dry until he had nothing left
to give. Knowing he was no longer there to torment Ricky and keep him on a
leash still stunned him.

Don
killed Clive for me.
Part of Ricky was still furious at the Beta for going
behind his back, but the other part belonging to his beast was smug and
satisfied.
