With her help, they’d worked on the ranch together side by side. He no longer saw the duties as a burden, but as a way of living he loved and shared with the people he cared most about. He felt needed and, most of all, wanted. To him, he would never have another chance at the championship, but he had won all that mattered to him starting on the day he hired his own fairy godmother.

Kissing her, softly at first, and then deepening the embrace, his heart thundered in his chest and he heard a roar in his ears. She tasted so sweet that he sought more.

“Ah geez, not again,” Lance said, joining them on the porch. “Don’t you two ever take a break?”

Jake pulled away reluctantly. “There was a time when you and your brothers not only wanted us to kiss, but did everything to encourage us.”

Lance, tall, lean, and with no trace of his hippie phase in evidence, smiled slyly. “Well, that was before. Now that I’m older, I see what I’ve been missing, so it’s like you two rub it in.”

“Does that mean we need to take an ad out for you?” Callie asked.

“Oh no, you don’t. Right now I’ve got my hands full with the restaurant. Speaking of which, if I don’t get there and start cooking, Gus and Flossie will fire me. But first, I’ll say goodbye to the little rug rats.”

“They can’t fire you when you’re part owner, silly,” Callie called after him as he jogged to the twins riding bareback on the pony with Les leading them around the corral.

Jake tucked her close, her back to his front as they watched their sons. “If we hurry, we might just sneak upstairs. No one will be the wiser.”

She moaned. “Afraid not. Stan’s in his room working on a new software program for his company and Trudy’s helping. They’ll hear us and figure it out.”

“They’re engaged. I’m sure it’s not new to them.”

She chuckled, swatting his straying hand. “You forgot Marvin.”

Jake stilled, fearing what he’d hear next.

“He’s demonstrating his new gadget for us today. He should holler for us any minute now.”

Jake grunted. “That’s if he doesn’t blow another hole through the shed roof with his cockamamie contraption.”

“Oh, Jake,” she said, turning in his arms and grasping his face between her hands. “He’s really good. And this investor has a lot of faith in him. Who knows, maybe Marvin will invent the next best new whatchamacallit to hit the market.”

Jake grinned down at her. “We’ve done a pretty good job with them, haven’t we, Mrs. Lassiter?”

“I’ll tell you a secret,” she whispered.

With Callie, he expected anything at this point. He looked his fill, his heart catching as he realized just how lucky he’d been that day she answered his ad.

He’d wanted freedom and in a sense he’d gotten that and more. Freedom to totally open his heart without lingering reservations or doubts. In doing so, he’d given himself the greatest gift possible: unconditional love.

“It’s all in the fairy godmother dust. Just a sprinkle here and there works every time.”
