Chapter 24

SARAH

“Sarah, I want you to stop the birth control,” Michael stated out of nowhere one day. I had been thinking about it since we had gotten married four months ago. Now we had this big house with the yard and the dog in the suburbs, it was a perfect time to start a family.

“Michael, I am not ready to give up my career. I have just gotten started. Love, give it some time. We have Frankie, and he is a handful already. We need time for us, Michael.” I had been thinking of stopping the birth control, too, but I was going to surprise him. Maybe I would get pregnant right away, but according to the web, it said it would take a long time after stopping birth control to get pregnant. Michael was overprotective as it is; add a pregnancy to it, and I was afraid he would wrap me in bubble wrap.

“Fine, babe, but at least think about quitting work soon because I can’t wait to come home to find your sexy ass waiting for me with dinner ready, or at least dessert.” He winked his eye at me with his sinful grin.

I rolled my eyes at him and walked to the kitchen to take our dishes as I uttered, “You are incorrigible.” He walked up to me carrying our glasses to the dishwater.

“Damn straight, wife. Haven’t you learned that by now?” Damn that smile, it was disarming. “Have I told you I love you today?”

“Only once,” I pouted cutely, pretending to be hurt as I huffed out my response and put the plates in the sink.

“How remiss of me! I love you, Sarah.” He pulled me into his tight embrace, squeezing me tightly. I giggled as he nibbled on my neck. “Do you still love me?”

“Of course, old man, I love you very much.”

He had asked me that ever since he found out that I knew about his past. It happened when Jason Andrews’ trial came up two months ago. The defense attorney tried to claim that Michael had only attacked Jason in a fit of jealous rage, and that it was Michael’s past that had made him a violent man. Michael was devastated that I had to find out this way, but all I had said to him about it was that I had wished he told me first.

“I was afraid of the way you would look at me.”

“Michael, I found out about your past the night of the party when you and Holmes were out talking, when you thought I was in the bathroom. I came out to find you and I overheard your conversation. I have been waiting for you to tell me.”

“I am sorry. You are the best thing that has ever happened to me and I was afraid of losing you.”

“Never, Michael. Your childhood helped you become the old man you are today.”

“Do you still love this old man, Sarah?” As much as he was playing, he was just as serious. I could feel the vulnerability in his words.

“Of course I love you very much, old man.” I tried to lessen the tension.

MICHAEL

I had come home from work the next day to see Stacy at our house in tears, “What the hell is going on here?” I hadn’t talked to David today, and I prayed something hadn’t happened to him.

“Stacy and Ryan broke up.” The relief I felt was immediate. Then like a big brother, I had been upset by it, and needed to call David to fill him in. I left to go into my study we set up when we bought the house.

“Hey bro, your sister is at my house right now and in fucking tears.” I was feeling fit to be tied.

“Yeah, I know. Sarah asked me to leave early today because my sister was upset. I bet you it has to do with that prick who I had yet to meet.”

“It is. They broke up. I didn’t get any details, but that is what Sarah just told me.”

“I bet she is regretting not letting me meet the fucker. I swear if I find him, I will choke the bastard.” David had been furious that she had been refusing to let him meet this boyfriend. I don’t know how many times we played basketball that he would rant about it. I am glad that he didn’t know who this guy was because he seemed to be about to go off the deep end about it.

“I need your wife to tell me about this guy, like his full name.” I knew about some of Stacy’s past and David’s involvement in fixing it. I was worried my friend would go too far to protect her.

“She won’t do it if Stacy doesn’t want her to tell you.” I knew my wife was just as stubborn as anyone of them.

“You could persuade her. If you know what I mean,” David said suggestively.

“Ha, have you met my wife? The woman is as stubborn as they get. She is the one that has me locked up on her goods, not the other way around.” I knew she had me by the balls when it came to getting what she wanted. Not that I didn’t still get my way a lot and bossed her ass around when necessary, but when she was dead set on something, it was the pussy she taunted and teased me with.

“Well, give it a shot. I have watched her wait for your call or do what you tell her to do often enough to know you have her locked down.”

“I will do my best, but she just might not know anything besides what we know.”

“Okay. That is all I ask. She is all I have left and she had a raw deal growing up, so I want to make sure she is happy and this bastard just used her.” David was enraged, but his hands were tied. He already had issues to handle at work and with his new brother in the picture, it was all overwhelming for my friend to overcome. All three of the siblings felt like they got shafted by their mother and lost all that time together.

“I will talk to you later.” I hung up with David and went to check on the girls.

I walked in the room to see that they had out some ice cream and a scary movie on. I sat with the girls for a while and decided to cook dinner for the ladies. That night we wanted to go out to a driving range. We all headed to a local arcade place. We hit several buckets of balls. Stacy took out her pain and frustration on the ball and the driver as I felt up on Sarah, showing her how to hit the ball. I would feel sorry for this dude if he was around Stacy now.

Stacy was slowly coming around to the living, but had hardly hung out with Sarah, when I was around. Neither girl would give up any information about Ryan to us guys. Hell, we hadn’t even known what gym it was. Granted, David could have delved into her personal information, but he couldn’t do that to her. Since she was improving, he let it go, for now.

SARAH

As time went on, Stacy started going on dates to take her mind off Ryan and his betrayal of what they had, but it had not worked one bit. She struggled to understand why he would just end things with her, and she knew it had to be someone else.

With Andrews in jail and not a peep out of Bambi, I thought I was safe. So I called off the guys that Michael had put on me seven months into our marriage. He tried to pretend that they were from David’s security team, but I called bullshit on that right away. He had confessed that he just wanted me safe and they were staying until he was sure there were no more problems. He still didn’t want me to get rid of them, but I talked him into it. I knew that he had at least one guy tailing me at a distance, but I let him have it. He had Paul with him most of the time, so I needed someone with me.

I was about to have a meeting with a client and my boss when in walked Holmes and Brandi. Apparently their superficial arrangement was still in the works. I couldn’t be happier that Michael had the sense not to fuck that whore. Thankfully, the client was running behind schedule. I didn’t want them to witness the confrontation that I knew would happen.

“Mrs. Vitale, it is so good to see you again,” Roderick Holmes said as he held on to the waist of an angry Brandi. I knew she still hated the fact that she was stuck with the older guy when she had had a young, hot guy in her grasp, but he only wanted me. She couldn’t stand that, to her she was perfection, stupid bitch. Her self-inflated ego is what got her into this mess in the first place.

“Trisha, it is good seeing you again as well. With all the pretty ladies working for Montgomery, I should be jealous.” Holmes winked at the ladies and had, stared directly at me. “Mr. Holmes, we are not on good terms, so do well to remember that,” said Trisha, who had once been Roderick’s girlfriend in their younger days until he had traded her in for a wealthier woman. I could still see the anger Trisha felt for him.

“Oh Trisha, dear, it seems you landed well on your feet with your husband and kids in college. Can we let bygones be bygones?”

“You are not to be trusted with anything. So no, I do not want to waste my time dealing with you. We have a meeting, so if you would excuse yourself and your latest tramp, it would be great.”

“See, Brandi, this is what a bitter woman looks like.” I held Trisha, who tried to bolt out of her chair and gouge his eyes out.

“You don’t want to be like her, so you might as well give up on Vitale because unless she leaves him, he is off the market.”

“Holmes, please, this woman has nothing on me.” Was this bitch retarded?

“I have Michael, don’t I? What do you have, hmmm? Nothing but a sleazy man who tries to pick up anything that walks. It’s sad because you two are the best you both could do. You have been warned to stay away at the wedding. Now I am telling you again, back the fuck up, you stupid slut, before I call the cops.”

Brandi had been furious and launched at me with the knife that had been at the table before anyone had a chance to stop her. “He is mine, you fat whore. I will get him back. I hope you die.” Her words were in a crazy shrieking tone as she stabbed me. Roderick pulled her back and watched as I was bleeding from my chest. Trisha was trying to stop the bleeding while she and several other patrons called 911. Since I had called off Michael’s team, he had only one of the guys following me to make sure I was safe. He had not arrived in time to stop the attack, but called Michael. He pulled Roderick from the bitch and held her down until the police arrived.

MICHAEL

Sarah was rushed to Northwestern and into surgery. I arrived at the hospital just as the ambulance pulled up with my wife in it, fuck! I saw them as they brought my Sarah out on the stretcher and I ran with them.

“Amore, talk to me.” She had the mask on her face and was unconscious. I wanted to cry like a fucking baby. Her clothes were covered in blood. “Dio mio, what the hell! Somebody tell me something,” I screamed to the paramedics.

“Sir, your wife was stabbed in her lung and is being transported into the OR. You will have to talk to the doctors about her condition.” They rushed her in, and I had to stand by and watch them cart her away.

I had been joined by David, Stacy, Madeline, and Trisha shortly after I arrived. Their worry was almost just as great as mine. “I hope that bitch gets twenty for this.”

“I want her dead, David, she deserves that.” Stacy was outraged that David only thought my wife’s life wasn’t worth the death penalty.

“They won’t execute her for attempted murder. Sarah is going to pull through.” David wasn’t giving up hope that Sarah would survive, despite the severity of her injury. I prayed for that, too. I needed to believe she was going to be okay.

“No, I guess you are right because Sarah is going to be fine.” Stacy had looked over to me. I felt empty, hollow inside. She walked over to me and put her arms around my shoulders. “She is going to be all right. You have to believe that, Michael.”

“I am trying. I promised to protect her and I failed. That bitch caused my wife to be here. I want her ass dead, too, but I know Sarah, and she is too kind to want to see that bitch dead. I need to be strong for Sarah. I will do whatever she wants me to do as long as she pulls through.” I needed a miracle. I didn’t know anything about her condition and I was fucking losing it. I paced back and forth when I wasn’t trying to fight back the tears.

It was two hours later when I was able to go in and see her. The surgeon had just finished and she was now in recovery. According to the recovery nurse, all would be well. She was going to pull through. I had walked into the room with my heart aching. She laid there in the hospital bed, pale and unconscious with remnants of blood on her gown and body. So much like earlier and not at the same time. Despite her appearance, I knew she would be okay. I walked up to my wife and whispered words of my love, devotion and guilt.

“I love you so much, Sarah. I am sorry I brought this on you.” I pulled back from her and paced. My anger coming to the forefront as I watched the machines breathe for her. “Damn it! I knew I should have left you surrounded by guards. When you wake up, you will start doing as I tell you, you got me, woman?” I was crying out my anger as my heart broke. “Damn it, Sarah, just wake up. Just for a fucking moment, please.” I gripped her hand in one of mine. I used my other hand to brush her hair away from her face.

It was hours later and all the family and friends had gone when I felt the squeeze of her hand. I looked up half asleep to see her with glassy eyes, looking back at me. I called in the nurse, who was followed in by the doctor. They evaluated her and took her off the machines as she was breathing fine on her own. She spent the next week in the hospital. When she was released, she decided that she was not going back to work. Of course I told her that she wasn’t going back even if she wanted to do so.

Brandi had been charged with attempted murder and plead not guilty, stupid bitch. It was not until nearly a year later that the trial was under way and a very large, pregnant Sarah took the stand. She didn’t stand a chance. She received forty years for attempted murder.
