“Yes, sir, Lieutenant!” Smitty saluted
despite himself. Wheeling, he dispatched the order given.

Ty’s nostrils filled with the smoke, heat and
fumes. The fire raged all around them. Bodies burned along with
every piece of wood in sight. “Don’t slow down, woman. Head
straight for the motherfuckers. I intend to have a final word with
Draco.”

Sonja’s wolf glanced back with a snarl. Her
eyes glowed with gold fire. Her muzzle dripped with blood while her
coat, liberally coated in the enemy’s life force, dripped
crimson.

They found the vermin shouting commands at
the lackeys or day-walkers still loyal to their quest. The gift of
walking in the sunlight proved something everyone wanted. The enemy
kept coming!

“Take the rest of these and go!” Ty shoved
the ammo at Sonja and changed so quickly, she didn’t have time to
object. His dark fur tail disappeared into the smoke.

“Wait!” Her words floated on the smoky
breeze. “We’re mates for Christ’s sake!” She raced after her
wolf.

Chapter 10 - Truth or Fantasy

Draco
raced up and down the lines as vampire after vampire suited up to
do battle with the werewolves attacking through the portal.
Cursing, he wished for time. No time remained for the plan he’d so
desperately attempted to execute. How had everything gone awry? One
minute, Draco had Ty in his grasp, the perfect bait for capturing
Sonja without battle or loss of vampires. His supply ran low, he
mused. “Damnation!” Snarling at the first lackey he passed, Draco
shouted orders to hold the line. Cringing at his master’s fury, the
poor fellow stumbled into Ty’s path unknowingly and paid the
price.

“Your time’s up, Draco. I won’t let you
manipulate the situation any longer. We run things now. You’re a
dead warlock walking!”

Draco dropped his chin, sneering in disgust
at the warrior werewolf. “I’ve no intention of leaving here or
dying for the likes of you, werewolf. You’re less than dirt to me.
Take heed! Those you love most need you.” With the taunt, Draco
flung a finger at the stonewall littered with ammunition, where the
image of Sonja appeared gagged and tethered to a pole. “Make a move
toward me and the bitch dies! Understood?”

Ty stumbled to a halt. Shifting in the blink
of an eye, his mouth fell open. Was it a trick? Was she real or a
figment of his imagination? Did Draco play games with his vision?
The moments that ticked by were like forever. If he attacked, Sonja
could die. If he didn’t, she would certainly die. Playing the odds,
Ty straightened as a man, raising his hands in surrender. “You’re
right. I can’t allow anything to happen to my mate.” Taking a step
in retreat, he acknowledged Draco’s victory. “You’ve won. What
price are the spoils?”

Draco threw back his dark head as laughter
erupted. His mirth was his undoing as Ty lunged.

Tearing flesh, Ty drug the bastard to his
knees. Ty tore skin away from bone, ripping his bloody head from
his body. The body of the vampire king smoldered, before
disappearing into dust. “Gone!”

His words echoed in the darkness. Sonja’s
wolf stepped out of the trees. “Good work, Lieutenant.” The smile
she sent him proved the most treasured victory of all.

“I took a gamble. Thank the gods I won.”
Gathering her close as she shifted in his arms, he went from
allowing the wolf to bathe his face with her tongue to kissing the
woman who’d stolen his heart.

Epilogue

The
cries coming from the bedroom brought cheers from the men outside.
The pack huddled close to the front porch.

Ty stepped to the door of his family’s ranch
house, with a smile of jubilance on his face. In his arms he held a
bundle which resembled a baby.

Smitty stepped closer. “We be waiting,
Lieutenant. What is the wee bundle? A boy or a lass?”

“The baby’s a boy, lads. I have a son!”

The cheers erupted again with verve. In
celebration, Smitty grinned foolishly, as he patted Ty’s back,
while raising his glass to the men standing behind him. “Blessed be
the Western Werewolf pack, for a new generation is born! Blessed be
our clan of werewolves whose linage is secure for years to come!
The misses – how’s the leader of our humble pack? Sonja came
through well, eh?” Smitty’s tongue was loose with the Irish whiskey
the pack had been passing amongst them as they waited for the
birth.

“She’s fine, boys. She came through with
flying colors. A proud man I am today. I have a healthy son, and a
wife who’s safe and hardy. I couldn’t be happier.” Ty’s eyes held
the gleam of a man with the world at his feet.

The men erupted into cheers and whoops at the
news. The party was just getting started as Smitty broke open a keg
of moonshine. “Peers we have more than our hides to be grateful
for, Lieutenant. Peers we have a future in Texas – one full of
promise and good fortune.” He swayed as he saluted Ty who grinned
at his captain before turning back to return the baby to his
mother.

Behind a closed door with a moment of
precious privacy, Ty laid his son next to his mother resting in the
bed. Hortence finished her tiding before slipping out with a smile.
Wondering now what they’d do without the old woman, Ty turned his
attention to a sleepy-eyed Sonja.

With the citron burning bright in her pupils,
Sonja smiled up at him. “Did I do well?” she asked softly.

Ty’s heart squeezed with
the question. How could she ask? Didn’t she know? “Wife, mother,
mate and lover – you’re all things to me, Sonja. You’re the sun in
the morning and my moon at night. I love you unconditionally, even
when your stubbornness takes hold.” He leaned over to kiss her
forehead, which lead to a kiss on the cheek, followed by another on
the lips. Taking a breath, he sighed in contentment. “Well – did
you do well? You were magnificent, Sonja of the Western Werewolves.
You
are
magnificent.”
