Chapter 1

Zombie Report (Rayea)

***

I like my zombies slow and I like my zombies stupid.
” ~Seth Grahame-Smith

***

Seven months later after the death of Zombie Steve.  Mid June.

In the past, I did not think being a zombie killer would be fun. Even with my being a vampire, the thought of it had always scared me. Now?  It was actually enjoyable.  I know.  Isn’t that weird to say?  But yeah, it had become just that. However, my thinking could have been messed up because I was on an extreme high.  High on life, as the saying goes.

Let me back track.  Seven months ago Lynn, Grace, and I had met our first zombie on Earth. Zombie Steve, as we called him. In real life, he had been Lynn's former boyfriend, the ex she had gone back to so he could beat her up some more while he drank like a fish.  Around Halloween last year, we decided to pay Steve a visit and found him dead, and later undead when he sprang to life again as a zombie.

His time as a zombie did not last long.  My fledgling vampire, Grace, who has been mastering her skills as a kick ass vampire in her own right, helped me destroy Zombie Steve.  That night, we led him out behind Lynn’s apartment building and roasted the poor soul.  Having fire power skills is a characteristic of my vampire nature I am truly thankful for now.  So Zombie Steve was no more and Lynn was free to pursue her relationship again with Ashton Taylor, our actor friend who was a far better catch than Steve.  I had dated Ashton in the past, so I totally approved of Lynn finding a sweet guy like Ashton.  A man who deserved her.

After Blick, my best friend and a wolf god in his own right and I got engaged, my prowling around for any and every romance I could find suddenly ended.  I had played the field all the time I had known Blick.  We had been best friends.  I thought that was where it ended.  There had been the Michaels, the Ashtons, and more I never brought up to him or wrote about in my journals.  It took me dying to realize who meant the most to me, the man who I could not live without, the man who invaded my dreams even when I did not know who he was.  Blick.  When I returned to the world of the living, I popped the question to him.  The first second I had a chance I asked him to marry me, and thankfully he had accepted.

Enter Present Day

The past seven months have been a whirlwind of amazement for me, Rayea, the Vampire from Hell.  After a year of unconsciousness, I am back from the dead and a blood god as well, if I let that title go to my head – which I don’t.  Fortunately, I passed my Judgment Day with flying colors.  Shifting into a dragon probably helped and my saving the Ancient Council from a prison of containment worst than I could ever imagine didn’t hurt.  Having that behind me now is wonderful.  Anyways, my life is still complicated.  It never stops.

I’m engaged to be married.

I’m planning my wedding.

I’m killing zombies at every turn.

Okay, maybe it is not at every turn.  Grace and I are keeping the situation contained in America while my fiancée, Blick and the others, Demetri, Ra, J, and Michael search the world for any other outbreaks.  Lynn, our best friend who is human is surfing the internet for any and all zombie chatter.  It’s a way I devised to keep her off the front lines and safe.

So far, I can report that all is well on the Zombie front, at least for the time being.

However, my father who is Satan has returned to the scene.  Sometime ago, I ripped his heart out of his chest and killed him.  Or thought I killed him.  Now I don’t think he’s dead.  I have no proof really, a fact Blick reminds me of when I bring it up on our phone calls.  But I’m not crazy.  I know I’m not.  I feel it in my gut.  He’s out there again and he’s the one behind the wine called Devilish Beasts that’s turning humans into zombies.  I know it as sure as I have blood in my veins, flammable blood.

Gas Mask & Essentials (Rayea)

Zombie killing has turned out to be a profitable sideline business for Lynn.  After Lynn insisted I get all the profits for my book sales, her income dried up.  For a few months, it looked like she would have to return to bartending.  But Grace and I both agreed to figure out a business she could run from her apartment.  A killing zombie service.

Lynn started a website,
www.killurzombie.com
and responses poured in.  She had a lot of emails to read and analyze as we tried to decide if a possible threat someone sent in was a real zombie sighting or not.  More times than not, the call was bogus, but every now and again the call was genuine.

We refused to let Lynn go out on a call with us.  She was allowed to go later after the zombie has been destroyed, visit the person who reported the incident, and collect the disposal funds.  But that was it.  I knew that pissed her off because she wanted to help us, stand side by side with us and kill zombies.  A task I did not want our human friend performing.  I didn’t want to risk her getting bitten or worst.

Once we had received about a dozen calls and Grace and I had contained each situation, Lynn decided to sit us down and make us watch one of her favorite movies,
Ghostbusters
.  She said it was time for us to get serious about the zombie killing business.  We had been watching other zombie related television shows and movies in the afternoons during the week and on the weekends, so she told us this old ‘80s movie would be appropriate too.

***

As I returned from stepping out on the balcony of Lynn’s apartment to answer a call, I pushed my phone in my back pocket of my black jeans.  “What did I miss?” I asked.

“Eggs frying on the kitchen counter,” Grace giggled.

“And that Zulu character in her fridge.”  Lynn handed Grace another iced coffee.

Both girls looked like they could have been sisters with their red hair and pale complexions.  Lynn wore her hair in a short bob that accentuated her high cheek bones while Grace usually pulled her hair into a pony tail like I did.

“Zuul,” Grace announced, correcting Lynn’s pronunciation of the dog monster one of the characters turns into after he’s possessed by a demon.  She gulped down the caramel mocha drink and rested the cold glass bottle against her cheek.  It was a clear sign that Grace was getting hungry.  I had noticed that Grace drank a lot of caffeine when she was trying to avoid going hunting.  I made a mental note to restock Lynn’s refrigerator with her favorite caffeine beverages when I could.

“Don’t you think we need something to protect our faces?” I asked as Lynn, who was still in her night shirt and shorts, handed me another bowl of popcorn.

I placed it on the table, trying not to appear to Lynn as on edge as I had been all evening.  Grace was in the same boat so I knew she was fighting her thirst too.  Often Lynn handed me snacks she was munching on, assuming I ate like she did.  Solving the zombie situation was always on my mind, even when Grace and Lynn hoped to entertain me with other activities.  Maybe my stress level would decrease when Blick returned, but I doubted it.  My mind was racing, searching for solutions, and I wasn’t interested in food like Lynn’s snacks.  Often I forgot how lean Grace’s and my diets had become.  Being vampires, we focused on one thing.  Blood.  If we had plenty of it, we didn’t think about our next meal.  If we didn’t have enough, it was all we thought about.

My stock of vampire blood the gods had given me had kept us happy for several months.  Grace had learned how to freeze dry small portions of the supply and had created blood pills that we were starting to pop like candy.  Lately, we were trying to conserve our intake and have only small amounts of blood a couple times a day.  We tried not to take the blood pills in front of Lynn so these movie marathons of three or four hours made us hungry and unpredictable.

Grace and I accepted the snacks Lynn offered us out of kindness, but we didn’t eat anything which left Lynn with a lot more time to nipple away and listen to our brainstorming session about to ensue.  I had told them how my mind whirled now with thoughts and decisions, faster than ever before.  I only wished I had a way to slow it down.  I feared the lean diet I was on was a contributing factor.

“We could protect our faces with goggles or something maybe,” Grace offered.  She stretched her long legs out and propped them on the end table in front of Lynn’s couch.

I glanced at Grace as she got comfortable.

“We really don’t stay in one place too long when we’re fighting the zombies, so something on our faces may just get in the way.  What do you think, Lynn?” Grace asked our human friend.

Grace winked back at me as she purposely pulled Lynn into the conversation.

I knew that wink.  She too agreed that Lynn enjoyed our zombie discussions, even though we kept her away from the action.  It was good to make her feel included.

“More than goggles,” I began.  “These suits the guys have in this movie.  Should we have something like that?  I like it, but maybe that’s too much.  It’ll draw attention to us when we go in for the kill.  I don’t want bulky clothing bothering me.  Do you?” I asked as I stood in front of the table, pacing back and forth in front of my big screen television.  Lynn and Grace both watched me as I gestured with my hands.  Lynn grabbed the bowl of popcorn and kicked her feet up too.  It was so wonderful being back and hanging out with my friends.  I had missed them both more than I could say.

“What about a gas mask?” Lynn spoke up.  “Oh and don’t forget about those flamethrowers too!  I can order more from my friend in Texas.”  She tossed more popcorn in my mouth.

“As long as it’s a few zombies we are working with at a time, I don’t think we need the flamethrowers.  Besides, that’s why I am wondering what else we can do.  Grace, we nearly burned that small shop down the other day.  Using our fire power is very dangerous.  We could set the whole city on fire.  A gas mask though?  That could work.  What do you think Grace?”  I paused my pacing for a moment and looked over at Grace.

As our eyes met, we exchanged an unspoken thought, both realizing our thirsts were attempting to make their presence known.

“You’re right,” Grace stated.  “But if we don’t burn the zombies up, then how can we kill them?  We don’t want their blood getting on us or in our mouths, so yeah gas masks could work,” Grace agreed.  “Lynn, I like that idea.  It gives us some protection.”

I shook my head in agreement just as I noticed Lynn nodded her head too.

“Blood in the mouth would be bad,” Lynn mumbled as she returned to munching on more of the popcorn.

Grace laughed at her and slapped Lynn’s knee.  “I know you want to go on runs with us, but it’s not safe,” she said.

“I know,” Lynn muttered. Of course, Grace had heard her thoughts the reason she shifted the subject.  Grace was doing a better job of ignoring her rising thirst than I was.

We knew Lynn dreamed of standing side by side with us, mowing down zombies.  I added my opinions on not wanting her to be involved in the killing too.  “We’ve been really fortunate so far.  When we show up, we only have a few zombies to deal with.  That could change at any time.  I don’t want you in the middle of sea of zombies, Lynn.  You cannot get bitten!  No.  What you’re doing is extremely important and it keeps you out of harm’s way.  Okay?”

“Fine. I know,” Lynn replied as she stared into the popcorn bowl, refusing to look up.

This subject was ongoing.  We had been over it time and time again.  I knew Lynn wanted to figure out how she could help more.  She wanted to be on the front lines with us, but we both refused.

“My vampire friends putting the human in her place,” Lynn growled.

I raised an eyebrow at her, and then narrowed my eyes.

Lynn threw up her hands and returned to eating her popcorn.  “Whatever.”

We decided to drop the subject for now and get back to the previous conversation.  I recapped our ideas.  “So yes to the gas masks.  No to flamethrowers.  What about swords or knives too?  Chopping the heads off?  Basic zombie killing 101.  Is that too medieval?”

“I think that’s a great idea,” Grace agreed.  I saw a savage sparkle surface in her green eyes.

“That’s because you like the chic with the sword in
The Walking Dead
,” I replied.

“You have to admit.  She’s a bad ass!” Lynn offered.

Grace and I both laughed at Lynn.  The joke washed over me.  I breathed a sigh of relief.

Lynn smiled at us.  “I can just see it now.  Both of you dressed in black t-shirts, black skinny jeans, and black boots with gas masks propped on your heads and swords slung over your backs.  Give me the word and I’ll order it all!”

“Looks like it’s decided,” Grace chuckled.

“Michonne would be proud,” I admitted.

Grace and Lynn both swiveled their heads over at me.

“When did you learn their names?” she asked me, not realizing I had been watching their favorite TV show,
The Walking Dead
too.

“I thought television was beneath you.  You only like movies, right?” Grace asked.  “You told me that.”

“I never said that,” I qualified.  “I get bored.  That’s all.  TV series go on forever.  I lose interest.  Besides, it’s research and actually I’ve discovered it’s rather calming.  It slows my rapid thinking down.”

“Ahhh,” Lynn said as Grace glanced at me with an inquisitive expression on her face.  Running her hands through her long pony tail, Grace cocked her head at me.  “Mind numbing TV calms you down.  Maybe I should try that too.  I could watch old sitcoms.  Those put me to sleep.”

We all laughed again.  My friendships with Lynn and Grace had developed greatly since I had returned.  Granted the friendships were different.  A friendship with a human versus a vampire is going to be different.  I could not ask Lynn to go hunting with me as I could Grace.  But I don’t think Lynn really minded as long as we treated her with respect.  Any creature, vampire or otherwise wants love, trust, and respect, right?

“Hey Lynn, what if we strike a compromise?” I asked, returning to the dreaded subject she had brought up earlier.

As I changed the subject, my movements blurred in front of them.  My voice seemed to bounce off the walls as I approached Lynn.  The bowl of popcorn she had been holding disappeared out of her hands.  Instantly Grace stood at attention.

“Just because we won’t involve you in the zombie containment stuff doesn’t mean you can’t help us pick out some stuff.  How about we all go shopping?” I flipped the DVD player off and deposited the bowl on the table again.  “I think we need some fresh air.”

Grace bumped Lynn with her hip.  “Go get dressed.  You can help me pick out a sword.”

Lynn screamed with joy and jumped up in the air.  “Oh my god!  Really?  Seriously?”

I raised my hands, motioning for her to be quiet for a moment.  I felt my green eyes flashed a brilliant neon glow and then returned to their emerald radiance.  “If we do see anything unusual, we’re going to be cool.  Okay?”  I paused for a moment, shifted my weight to the other leg, and continued.  “You’re going to be cool and stay close to me or Grace at all times.  Agreed?”

Enthusiastically, Lynn nodded.  “Absolutely!  Anything you say!  Besides, we haven’t had any reports of sightings at night.  We’ll be fine,” Lynn declared.  “But you’ve got to grant me one request.”

Before she could finish her sentence, I answered her.  “Fine.  You get an outfit too.  Just promise me you won’t keep bringing up the zombie fighting subject.  Okay?”

“Agreed,” Lynn cheered, clapping her hands like a kid getting a puppy on Christmas morning.  “If I look like a zombie killer, I can be prepared.  That’s all I want!  To be prepared before the shit goes down.  Thank you!”  She raced over to me and gave me a big hug.  Gently, I pulled my human friend into my arms and held her still for a couple of seconds.  It was like catching a china cup before it fell to the floor.  When I felt Grace’s hand pat me on the shoulder, I opened my arms wider so the three of us could form a circle, a group hug as they called it.
