FOREWORD
I have been a pediatrician for twenty years and have looked at an estimated 500,000 ears during my medical career. Many times, the eardrums were inflamed or infected-looking. Because of my conventional medical training, residency, and postgraduate medical experience, I often have had to struggle to remember that every one of those ears was attached to a wonderful young child.
Sue Frederick's book has helped meand would help every doctor, health-care practitioner, and parentremember one crucial fact: A child's body will heal itself naturally if we stay out of the way and use gentle remedies, wisdom, and guidance.
I have seen the ability my thirteen-year-old daughter, Simone, has to heal herself, and I have watched thousands of other children do the same thing, often dealing with illnesses conventional (Western) treatment couldn't touch. I have also experienced tremendous frustrations when medical tools I acquired through my years of training fell short of alleviating pain and hastening healing.
We are all looking for ways to promote optimal health, strength, and wellbeing for our children and would like to do this nutritionally and naturally, without resorting to medications with potential side effects.
A Mother's Guide to Raising Healthy ChildrenNaturally
presents plans, details, and feelings in more accessible terms than I have ever seen them before. It is written from the perspective of a loving parent and aimed at other loving, intelligent parents. Sue Frederick's discussion of infant nutrition, vaccines, and infant sleep patterns should be required reading in medical school. The immune system, antibiotics, and disease prevention are covered in a manner that allowed even mea doctorto understand these crucial concepts in a natural light. Specific healing methods, elucidated with choices and concise methods of

treating all the common childhood ailments could serve as a text for doctors, parents, and anyone else who takes care of children.
I am pleased and honored that Sue Frederick asked me to write this note at the beginning of her book. This is a superb, enlightening work which manages to entertain on every page.

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
This book was the idea of Nathan Keats, the founder of Keats Publishing, who came to me with the title after having read one of my "Letters from the Editor" in
Delicious!
magazine. I'm grateful to Nathan for urging me to write a book even though I was the mother of a young child and working full-time as a magazine editor. I'm grateful to
Delicious!
magazine and its founder, Doug Greene, for launching my career in natural health journalism and encouraging me to find my voice and my audience in monthly letters from the editor. I'm thrilled to be editor of the Web site
www.healthshop.com
where, once again, I can reach thousands of people with a message of good health. I'll always be grateful to my friend Katherine Bergin, vice-president of healthshop.com, for her belief in my work and the career opportunities she has given me along the way.
It's truly a great blessing to bring a child into this world, and I have been very blessed to be the mother of my delightful Sarah. She is an inspiration in every way imaginable. Being her mom keeps me trying my best in all areas of life. And I deeply appreciate my own mother's generous spirit and strong encouragement. She taught me to love books from an early age.
A huge thank-you to the great friends and natural medicine experts who shared their knowledge, expertise, and experiences to help me write this book, especially Lara Pizzorno, a dear friend and excellent writer who wrote the natural remedies section, the materia medica, and the home health kit chapter. I have an enduring love for my first husband, Paul Frederick, who died of cancer in 1980. His love as well as the insights and wisdom he shared with me have molded my life and work every moment since his death. I remember my father every single day: He was, and always will be, my hero in every way, guiding me with love, kindness, and intelligence.
