command of the Vada.

Academie : The
training school of the Garda, the Army of Argyll, based at
Settlement

Accords of
Settlement : The alliance signed in AL 2 by the colonists from the
WCCS Argyll and the Lind.

AL : Anno
Landing, the years are counted from the first day in the summer of
the first year of landing.

Alavadha :
Goodbye

Alavidha :
Farewell

Allst : Tall,
large leafed tree of the north.

Ammokko
: Spaceship of the Dglai. It was destroyed by Tala Talansdochter
and the Lai Chizu in AL 608. (Victory)

Anders:
Replacement Ambassador from Vadath to Argyll.

Argyll : Human
country on the eastern coast of the larger northern continent. It
is named after the spaceship that brought its original settlers
there (Wolves/Paws)

Avuzdel : Lind
Central Spying Unit, a quasi-secret order within the Lind nation.
It is split into two, the Daki and the Raki. The Daki has three
sections, one in Largdom, one in Vadath and one on the other
northern continent, Dagan. The Raki is different. The members of
this have an extra duty and one most secret, that of protecting the
planet from extra-terrestrials. Apart from the Susas, the rest of
the Daki know nothing of them. The Raki also reports to the
Susalai, but directly, they neither have nor need a separate Susa.
There are not that many of them.

Battle of the
Alliance : Battle between the Larg and the convicts of the south
and the settlers and the Lind of the north at the beginning of the
second summer (AL 2) (Wolves)

Battle of
Duchesne : In AL 608, the Dglai invasion was defeated in this great
battle, at the edge of the Duchy of Duchesne in the Kingdom of
Murdoch. (Victory)

Battle of
Trumpet Keep : When the Larg invaded Vadath in AL 10 the Armies of
the North met them at David’s Keep which was renamed Trumpet Keep
after the battle was won. (Courage)

Battle of the
Gorge : When the Larg invaded Lind in AL 167 they were defeated at
this battle (Honour). Also known as the Battle of Fountains
Head.

Blue Pastures :
Land of myth and belief. The Lind believe the consciousness of
their dead brethren reside there.

Book of the
Fallen : The book of the serving vadeln who died in battle or from
wounds. It is kept in the Inner Sanctum at Vada.

Boton : Lai -
Probe of the Diaglon, sent to find out if the planet was suitable
for raiding and conquest. It was found by Vadeln Niaill and his
Lind Taraya and was the portent for the abortive invasion of the
Dglai in AL 608. (Victory)

Cador : The
demesne of Kellen Robert Crawford.

Chela : Lind
claw, they have five on each paw. They resemble the claws of an
earth cat in that they can tract and retract.

Cold-drake :
Murdochian term for dragon (in folklore and stories).

Conclave :
Ruling Council of the Kingdom of Murdoch, chaired by the King or
Lord Regent. All the Murdoch Dukes are entitled to a seat on
Conclave as is the Lord Marshall and the Primate. All seat-holders
are entitled to one vote.

Council of
Argyll : The ruling body of Argyll.

Cranston : A
town in north-eastern Argyll.

Daga : Lind den
or home of those who live with the Lind.

Dagan : Lai -
Home; also the name of the smaller, more westerly of the northern
continents.

Daki : Section
of the Avuzdel. (see above)

Dalina : Blue
flowers resembling snowdrops.

:
Frigate of the Argyllian Navy

Dedta :
Welcome. (formal)

Demesne :
Estate held from an overlord in the feudal Kingdom of Murdoch.

Dglai : Lai and
Dglai - Green skinned rtath of the Daiglon. The Dglai invaded
Planet Wolf in AL 608, were defeated and their spaceship destroyed
(Victory). Only a female and her young survived. This group are
being assimilated into the Lai culture on Dagan.

Diaglon : The
name for the genus from which the Lai (and the Dglai) have
evolved.

Domta :
Permanent pack home of the Lind.

Domta Holad
Winston : The settlement in Vadath where medicine is taught and
founded by Winston Randall in AL 2

Dugo : Small
prickly, dense and fast growing bush, prevalent in the north.

Duntanvad :

Durapaper : A
synthetic substance used in place of wood and pulp paper by the
original settlers.

Eilidon :
Kingdom in the Great Eastern Sea.

Elda(s) :
Leader(s) of packs and Lind nation

Express : A
service set up during the early years and modelled on the “Pony
Express” of the American mid-west in the nineteenth century with
the additional service of ‘immediate’ messages using the Lind’s
telepathic abilities.

Farquharstown :
A small village in Argyll about thirty miles north of
Settlement.

Fealtatis
Ceremony : The ceremony in the Kingdom of Murdoch when homage is
taken and promises made by the King and to the King.

Fifty-first
Ryzck : Known as the Susa’s Own and who perform tasks directly
ordered by the Susa of the Vada, the only Ryzck to contain more
than one Ryzcka

Fort :
Defensive site to where the crew and families of the WCPS
Electra
fled before being overrun by the convicts some
months after landing on Rybak (Wolves) - it became the ruling
centre and capital of the Kingdom of Murdoch (Courage) – the
principal royal palace is situated here.

Fountains Head
: Waterfall in south western Lind and the location of the most
westerly Holad station in the Lands of the Lind (see Battle of the
Gorge).

Galland
Confederation : A group of southerly islands allied to the Kingdom
of Murdoch.

Galliard : An
island in the Great Eastern Sea.

Garda : Regular
army of Argyll, its headquarters are at Settlement.

Geraldine : A
sloop of the Murdochian navy.

Gingrootbeer :
Spicy soft drink, non-alcoholic and a great favourite with Vada
cadets..

Great Eastern
Sea : Vast ocean east of Argyll containing hundreds of islands

Gtran : Large
vicious cat-like predators that inhabit the snowy mountain ranges
of the northern continent.

Gtratha :
Council of the Lind

Gtrathlin :
Leader of the Gtratha, the High Council of the Lind.

Greenfruit : A
northern fruit which is available during winter and summer.

Heroes of
Galliard : Rhian and Tadei.

Holad : Medical
section of Lind pack, or rtath.

Honour Roll : A
book in which is written the exploits of those of renown amongst
those serving in the Vada.

Inner Sanctum :
The room in the centre of the Vada Stronghold where lie their books
and memories.

Island Chain :
The traditional route the Larg take to attack the north and
situated just south of Settlement. Now that the threat from the
Larg appears to be over, it is being opened up to trade and
leisure.

Jeza : Eat.

Jezdic : Zebra
like intractable animal.

Kala : Caffeine
drink made from the nuts of the allst tree.

Kepi : Cap worn
by the Vada.

Kohort : Larg –
Kohort of Larg warriors, usually numbering at least 800.

Kura : Docile,
woolly, short-legged goat-like animal.

Lai : Legendary
beings of Lind mythology up to the beginning of the seventh century
when they came out of hiding to assist the other inhabitants,
two-legged and four in their quest to destroy the Dglai.

Warlike wolf-like denizens of southern continent

Largan : Larg -
Leader of all the Larg

Long Leave :

Malinon : a
beautiful bird-like creature with a wonderful trilling voice.

Malinon : A
coastal lugger.

Mardinare : A
semi-precious stone much sought after for jewellery; it is
pearly-green in colour.

Middle Sea :
Sea between the northern and southern continents.

Missouri :
Tidal river that lies between the two most northerly wards on the
eastern seaboard of Argyll.

Murdoch : Human
Country in the southern continent ruled by the ex-convicts (and
their descendants) from the WCPS
Electra
. It is also the
name of the river that bisects the Kingdom north to south.

Nad : Nothing.
It can also mean land on which there are no trees.

Nadlians of the
Larg : Land of the Larg in the southern continent.

North Caravan
Route : The route on the northern continent which runs from the
ferry at the west coast to Port Lutterell in the east.

Paula*:
Original Ambassador from Vadath to Argyll. (Lind: Venlei)

Pilli : Small,
edible darting red fish found in the rivers of the northern
continent.

Plodder : Name
given to the type of travelling horse that favoured for long
journeys.

Port Lutterell
: Main port of eastern Argyll, most of its traffic is composed of
merchantmen plying their trade between the mainland and the
islands, also the base for the Argyllian Navy.

Port Wylie : a
port on the southern coast of Argyll.

Power core :
The device that powered the WCCS

R’sair : Pirate
Kingdom in the Great Eastern Sea.

Raki : Section
of the Avuzdel (see above).

Randall :
Kingdom in the Great Eastern Sea.

Reform Movement
: Grass roots popular movement in Murdoch campaigning for the
abolition of serfdom.

Rhianan : The
main port on the Island of Galliard.

Ricca : A
rice-like crop grown in the south.

Rothesdale :
The demesne of the Ross family.

Royal Guard :
The regiment within the army of Murdoch which is responsible for
the safety of the royal family.

Ryzck : Troop
of Vada - made up of thirty-four vadeln-pairs and one commanding
vadeln-pair

Ryzcka : Vada
Troop Commander

Ryzcksusa : the
commander of the Western Ryzcks.

Settlement :
The original landing site of the WCCS
Argyll
. It became the
first line of defence for the protection from ingress over the
Island Chain and latterly the headquarters of the Garda.

Silver Star :
Bravery award given by the Susa of the Vada to serving and retired
vadeln.

Smaha : Red
numbing medicinal root

Standard :
Language spoken by the humans when they arrived on Rybak – as the
years progressed the language has shifted to take account of words
of Lindish and of the Larg.

Stanton : A
small rural village in the centre of Argyll.

Stewarton :
City of Argyll, situated inland beside Lake Stewart.

Stronghold : A
name used to describe the section within the town of Vada where the
Vada HQ is.

Supply Station
: Vada stations which are dotted around Argyll, Vadath and Lind for
the use of travelling vadeln-pairs.

Susa :
Commander of a Lindar, of the Vada and of the three sections of the
Avuzdel.

Susa’s Own :
The Fifty-first Ryzck of the Vada, under the direct command of the
Susa and the only one which contains more than one Ryzcka and four
Vadryzkas.

Susalai :
Supreme Commander of the Avuzdel.

Susyc : Overall
Commander of the Armies of the North, made up of troops from
Argyll, Vadath and the Rtathlians of the Lind.
