Chapter Five

“Joe, Patty, how are you?” Dr. Michelle Thomas sat behind her desk, staring at them as they sat on a love seat. Joe was already sweating. He didn’t want to be there, hadn’t wanted anything to do with marriage counseling. He grunted at her in response and caught the irritation from Patty. He huffed. Fine, for her he could pretend.

“We’re pretty good,” Joe answered for both of them. Patty snaked a hand over Joe’s thigh and he squeezed it with his. No matter what had happened over the last couple of weeks he still loved her more than life itself.

“So, how did the roleplaying exercise go?” Michelle sat back and clicked a pen, ready to record any breakthroughs they’d had.

“Fine, it went fine,” Joe mumbled. Why did they have to share this shit with her anyway?

“Fine as in we did it and hated it, or fine as in we had a fun time with the activity?” She raised her eyebrows and waited.

“You didn’t mind playing a role instead of being you? I was so afraid that you were going to hate me for being so different with you when you were Destiny, but I couldn’t help it. What do you both think?” He watched Dr. Thomas swivel in her expensive leather chair. “You can discuss your ideas once you leave. I’m sure you both have some fantasies you’d like to play out. Destiny seems to have whetted your appetites for roleplay. Now, let’s chat for a few minutes and then call it a night.”
