“But it wasn't my idea—there is no—I don't—”

A commotion in the outside lobby drowned Molly's stammered objection. She sucked in a quick, startled breath when she saw Mitch. He was followed by a gaggle of shoving reporters and photographers. Shouldering his way into Peter's office, Mitch joined them.

“You've seen the morning paper,” Mitch said, nodding to the stack on Peter's desk. “Are you collecting them for souvenirs, Molly?”

She glared at him.

“Well, Red,” he continued calmly, “we're all waiting for your answer.”

All at once Molly saw past the self-assured movie star to the scared man who had risked the ultimate humiliation to win her heart, to prove that he loved her.

She couldn't say no.

But she could make him squirm. And she would enjoy every delicious moment of the torture.

“I don't see anyone on bended knee.” She sniffed, pushing back her curls.

“Now you do,” he answered, dropping onto one knee. Cameras flashed.

“Peter's rehired me,” she said, taking care to put her boss on record next. “Do I have to quit my job, if we get married?” she asked him.

“No,” Peter answered.

Molly looked to Mitch for confirmation. “You heard the boss,” he said and shrugged. “But there is one condition.”

“And what might that be?”

“I have to be your number one client.”

“I think that can be arranged. Right, Peter?”

Peter nodded.

She stalled. “Will you still give me extravagant clothing?”

“As much as your mercenary heart desires,” he teased, “on one condition.”

“What's that?” she asked warily.

“Anything I pay for, I get to pick out,” he answered.

Molly felt her face flame, but went on. “One last thing.”

“One last thing,” Mitch agreed.

“I get to choose all your leading ladies.”

“Done.”

“Do you promise?”

“Red…”

“What?”

“Shut up and say yes.”

“Yes.”

“H
OW DO YOU SUPPOSE
Peter and Angie are handling the weekend with the twins?” Mitch asked Molly as they entered their room at Moral Courts, White Castle burgers and Ted Drew's concretes in hand.

“They've probably taken a vow of childlessness,” Molly said and laughed.

“And doglessness,” Mitch added, referring to the pair of Irish setter puppies they'd bought the twins.

“How did you register this time?” Molly asked, plopping onto the bed and unwrapping one of the bite-size burgers.

“Mr. and Mrs. Mitch Marlow,” he said proudly.

“Do you think that's wise?” she asked.

“Are you kidding? I've also arranged for them to put up a plaque in this room.”

“What?” Molly asked, choking.

“If Michael Jackson can have his own room at Disneyland…”

They took turns feeding each other between laughter and kisses. Sweet memories of another time shared the room with them.

“Well, what do you want to do now, Mrs. Marlow?” Mitch asked when they'd polished off the last of the food.

Molly considered him as he leaned against the headboard, hands clasped behind his head. Her eyes shone.

“Shopping is a good way to celebrate an anniversary,” she suggested.

He shook his head.

“Dancing is another good way to celebrate.”

He shook his head.

“No shopping? No dancing? Is that what you're saying?”

“You catch on fast, Red. We can't leave the room right now.”

“Why not?”

“We've only been here ten minutes. I have a reputation to uphold as a Hollywood heartthrob. I signed my real name at the register, remember.”

“I see,” Molly said, crawling up the bed to lie across him. She turned off the light.

He unzipped her linen walking shorts. “Did you bring the red cowboy boots?” he asked.

Molly laughed again. “You've got a fetish, Mr. Marlow.”

“Yeah,” he agreed, tugging at her soft, springy curls. “I love the color red.”
