CHAPTER
EIGHTEEN

Harper picked up the nearest
discarded bottle, and hurled it against the wall behind the head of the bed
where Josh and his companions were. It shattered with a loud crash, spraying
glass all over them.

Josh woke up
with a start.

“Hey who did
–” he began before seeing Harper. “Whoa. Whoa, whoa, whoa. Ah… Ah…”

“Save it,”
Harper growled and marched back down the hall.

“Harps!” Josh
shouted running out after her with the bed sheet.

She pulled
her handbag up from the kitchen stool and put it over her shoulder.

“What?” she
shouted.

“You gotta
forgive me,” Josh said. “I didn’t intend for this. Things just got … crazy
tonight.”

“Yeah. They
sure did.”

She turned to
go down the hall towards the front of the house.

“Wait a
second, you gotta give me another chance!” Josh shouted. “A chance to –
explain. And – apologize!”

Harper
stopped. “Why should I do that?”

He grabbed
her hand. “Because we’re getting married. I’m going to be yours forever.”

“It’s
amazing,” Harper said under her breath. “How long have we been together?”

“Huh?” Josh
murmured. “Uh, a year. Two years. A long time, right?”

“And it’s
only now that I really know who you are.”

“You can’t
base this on everything else!” Josh slurred. “I wasn’t thinking! I’m fucking
out of my mind.”

“Let go of
me,” Harper said.

He let go.
“Sorry. I just. Can we talk this out? Please. It’s really, it really doesn’t
mean anything.”

Harper looked
back at him, and then saw a figure emerge in the kitchen.

It was one of
Jayden’s friends who had held her by the van.

“Holy shit,”
the guy laughed. “What the fuck?”

“Fuck off
asshole,” Josh said glaring back at him. “I’m talking to my girl here!”

When he
looked back to Harper he saw there wasn’t a tear in her eyes.

“Harps,” he
said. “Can we talk about this? Will you try to … try to…”

Harper
lowered her head. “I can’t do that.”

“Well, why
not?” Josh demanded.

“Because I’m
not here,” she whispered. “I don’t exist.”

“What does
that mean? Harper?!”

She opened
the front door and stepped out into the darkness of the night before her. She
now understood the meaning of this whole night.

She
understood what she had to do.

CHAPTER
NINETEEN

As she had hoped, Bane answered
Cordelia’s phone. “Hello?”

“Bane?”
Harper gushed. “Oh, thank God.”

“What’s the
matter?”

“Can you come
get me? I’m at the front of my house where your guy dropped me off a minute
ago.”

Silence.

“Bane?”

“What
happened?”

“It doesn’t
matter,” Harper said. “I don’t belong here anymore. I want to leave it all
behind. I’m so glad I met you. And it’s hurt me so much not being able to
express my feelings towards you.”

“Is it real
this time?” Bane asked.

“Is what
real?”

“Are you
real?”

“I’m real,”
Harper said. “I want to be with you. Wherever that takes us. I just want to be
with you. And I don’t know what to say, or how to put it into words because
it’s not like that at all. It’s just something I feel inside.”

“Okay,” Bane
whispered. “I’ll see you soon then.”

CHAPTER
TWENTY

By soon, he meant really soon. Less
than a minute later the limousine had returned to the front of Harper’s house,
but this time Bane was in the backseat, waiting for her.

“How did you
get here so fast?” Harper demanded.

Bane reached
out and pulled the door shut behind her. “It sounded like you were in trouble.”

“I asked
how
not
why
.”

“Sometimes
the why is the how,” Bane said mysteriously.

Harper looked
down and noticed their legs were touching. She looked towards the far end of
the car. “He can’t see anything can he?”

“Not at the
moment,” Bane said, touching her hair.

The moonlight
oozed through the window and shimmered around her face.

“Why do we
feel this way?” Harper whispered. “Why do I want this so much?”

“Perhaps it’s
something we haven’t had before,” Bane whispered back. “Perhaps this is a love
we’ve never ever felt.”

Harper looked
up at him, quivering.

“Are you
afraid?” he asked.

“I think I
must be,” Harper said. “Or otherwise I’m nervous. Or excited.”

“I like that
third one best,” Bane replied.

Harper
nodded. She slowly closed her eyes and moved her lips up towards his. Bane put
an arm around her shoulder and leant down to meet her halfway.

And then it
was happening.

They were
kissing.

Harper’s
heart raced. His lips were soft and his tongue was gentle, but the area around
his mouth was firm and coarse. His eyes were half open. So were hers. They
kissed slowly at first, and broke away at intervals. But then the intervals
became shorter and shorter. The kissing so intense. He moved around to her neck
and kissed her there as well.

Harper sighed
with a release of anxiety, and then she allowed Bane to guide her to the floor
of the limo. His arms embraced her entire body as they kissed and kissed and
kissed some more. With her eyes closed throughout, she let her fingers find his
belt buckle and clawed her way through, until she was holding and stroking his
manhood. Bane was already hard, ferociously hard. She opened her eyes and saw
the look of intense desire in his eyes. He was going to fuck her, and neither
could resist.

Moments
later, he had penetrated her. His warmth shot through her entire body, causing
her to almost pass out. She stayed conscious and in the moment though, as he
kept pulling her into him, kissing her as beautifully as he could.

Harper’s
nails bit into his back through his shirt, unable to contain her excitement.
His hips continued thrusting back and forth, until his movement, his breath,
his body was all she knew and cared about. She wanted to say more to him.
Understand more of what they had together. Bane was such a unique individual in
that he was a bear shifter, and from a world unlike her own. Doubts would soon
have to form. Like how compatible she was with him. What if he didn’t like
things about her? What if she didn’t like things about him?

She could see
their entire life together. A story trapped within an unopened book.

She hoped one
day she would be able to look back and read it.

“I love you,”
Bane said out of nowhere. “I’m going to love you forever.”

Harper looked
up to him, tears in her eyes. “I don’t know why. But I think I love you too.”

He ejaculated
and fell into her, kissing each other’s cheeks. He did not withdraw for a long
time.

“I’m going to
marry you, Harper,” Bane said. “If you want to marry me that is. How do you
feel about that?”

“I don’t
know,” Harper said blushing. “Maybe. Someday I guess.”

Bane rolled
off of her and stared into her eyes smiling. “How about Sunday?”
