“What do you expect me to do? Do you want me to die old and lonely? Get off my back about this shit.”

Karen cleared her throat. “Besides, she’s dead—”

Before Karen could finish her sentence, Aimee snatched her by the hair. Russell immediately tried to pry Aimee’s hands from her, hair but she was holding on for dear life.

“Let go of me!” Karen screamed.

“Nah, you shouldn’t have been talking that slick shit. I told you this was family business, but you just had to put your two cents in,” Asia teased as she watched in amusement.

“Mee-Mee, let her fucking hair go!” Russell demanded.

After a few more seconds, Aimee finally released Karen from her grasp. Karen fell down to the grass with tears in her eyes.

Russell helped her to her feet. “Are you okay?”

“No. I'm going to call the police on you,” Karen cried as she pointed to Aimee.

“So what? I ain't scared of the police, trick.”

Russell, fed up with Asia and Aimee’s behavior, grabbed them by their arms and forcefully walked them over to the car. Aimee snatched her arm away from him. Russell put his finger in Aimee’s face and then Asia’s.

“Don’t come back over here until you learn how to act. I'm tired of y’all telling me what to do with my life. The shit stops here today. Now Karen is moving in, and that’s final,” he snapped and then walked away.

Aimee and Asia said nothing as they got inside of the car. They couldn’t believe that their relationship with their father had become so strained. Aimee couldn’t help but burst into tears. Her love life was shattered and now her father was treating them like they weren’t family.

“Aimee, don’t cry. Fuck him with his shady ass,” Asia said as she hugged her.

Aimee shook her head as she tried to find the right words, but she came up empty. The sadness inside of heart was so overwhelming. She wanted her life to go back to the way it was. Aimee still missed her mother something awful and she often cried at night. Asia drove off, feeling the same way that Aimee was, but she wasn’t one to cry. She couldn’t believe Russell was about to move this woman into the house that was once her mom’s. Asia vowed that very day that she didn’t want a relationship with her father anymore. She was completely done with him.

Chapter Twenty-Four

Big sat on his couch as he watch Zaria color in her coloring books. He’d picked her up the night before from Tara’s mother’s house. He figured Tara was still upset about the judge’s ruling and didn’t want to see him. Although he was happy that he was spending time with his daughter, Big still missed Aimee. He whipped out his phone and decided to dial her number.

“Yeah Big?” she answered flatly.

“Why you ain't called me?”

“You know why. Don’t sit on this phone and start frontin’.”

“Damn, you don’t miss a nigga?”

“No.”

“That’s fucked up.”

Aimee smacked her lips. “No. What's fucked up is you fucking with that T bitch. I'm sure she’s keeping your li’l dick wet.”

Big sighed. “I told you I stopped fucking with her the day I got caught. When you gon’ forgive me?”

Never
so stop calling me.”

“I thought I told you that we weren’t breaking up. Why do you think I'm playing with you?”

“Dakaden, what do you want?” Aimee asked, ignoring his last remark.

“So now I'm
Dakaden
?”

“No. Actually, you're an ass, but I'm just trying to be nice.”

“I was calling to tell you that I finally picked up Zaria last night. I won my case last week,” he informed her.

“Really?” Aimee’s voice softened. “I’m happy to hear that. I'm glad you finally have your time with Zaria.”

“It would be better if you were here with me, though.”

“Well, that ain't gon’ happen. Enjoy your time with you daughter. I gotta go,” she said, rushing off the phone.

“Aye, my patience is wearing thin. What I gotta do for you to forgive me? I'm tired of being without you.”

“Big, can you give me some damn time—”

“Aimee, I gave you like a month already! How can I fix this shit ‘cause I’m not letting you go.”

“You don’t have a choice,” Aimee retorted, not believing her own words.

“Yeah…a’ight. You at home?”

“Yes, and no, you're not welcome over here either.”

“I’ll be there later on. Bye,” he said and then hung up on her.

Big had to go to the bar later, so he needed to find a babysitter for Zaria. Just when he was about to call Danica, his phone rang. He looked and saw that it was Toi, so he answered.

“What's up, Toi?”

“Big,” she said, sniffling. “My husband found out about us.”

Big paused for a moment, trying to take in what she’d said. He was trying to figure out why she was telling him. “What the fuck you telling me for?”

“He knows everything. I think he might leave me. He made me tell him everything,” she cried.

“What did you tell him?” Big asked, ready to go off on her.

“I told him where we used to meet and your name. I also told him that you own a bar.”

Steam shot from Big’s ears as he listened to her rattle off. He didn’t like that Toi had told her husband his personal business. “I don’t know why you did that shit ‘cause if he comes at me wrong, I'ma body that nigga,” he snapped.

“What was I supposed to do?”

“I don’t know! Shit! Don’t call me with this bullshit no more either,” he barked and hung up the phone.

Big was so happy that he had finally ended things with Toi because she turning out to be messy. He didn’t appreciate her putting him into their marital problems. Yes, they did have an affair, but he felt her husband should only hold Toi accountable since she was the one that took those vows with him. Big attempted to calm himself down since he had Zaria with him.

“Zaria, you want to go see your auntie?”

“Yes!” she said excitedly.

“A’ight. Come on so Daddy can drop you off.”

Zaria went to grab her bag and then met Big at the door. They walked out and Big secured her in the backseat. Big hopped in his seat and drove off. He had a million and one things on his mind as he made his way to Danica’s house. Toi’s call had really made him upset and ready to smack the shit out of her.

After dropping Zaria off, Big headed to his bar for the night. Fridays was always his busiest night and his brothers usually showed up. Plus, Big was in need of a strong drink because his stress level was at an all-time high.

****

The bar had just closed and Big’s workers were making sure the place was clean. He was nice and mellow since he’d been sipping all night long. Dinero, Case, and Kiyan had come to the bar to chill with him. Hanging with his brothers always put Big’s mind at ease. After shutting down the lights, Big and his two bartenders walked out of the back. Once he made sure the girls were in their car safely, Big got inside of his.

Big decided he would go to Aimee’s house since he hadn't seen her. He was willing to beg and plead all night if he had to for her to let him back in her life. Plus, he was in desperate need of some pussy, and the only person that could satisfy his craving was Aimee.

Big pulled out his blunt from the ashtray and lit the end. When he pressed his engine’s start button, he felt something cold and hard touch the back of his head. Big attempted to turn around, but he was forcefully stopped.

“Keep your ass facing forward. I bet you wasn’t expecting this shit.”

****

“So you gon’ go back to him?” Dillon asked.

Dillon had come over to sit and talk with Aimee. She’d missed her friend and she wanted his perspective on her relationship status. Sometimes Aimee was glad that she had a male friend she could converse with when she didn’t understand Big at times. Even though Dillon wasn’t a huge fan of Big, he wouldn’t dare hate on their situation.

“I don’t know. Some days I want to be with him and then some days I don’t. I'm confused like a mothafucka,” Aimee told him.

Dillon sat and looked at her. He wanted to tell Aimee to leave Big alone, but he decided against it. “I'm not gon’ tell you what to do with your relationship. That’s up to you. I do think everybody deserves a second chance, though.”

Aimee shook her head. “Not Big, though. I can’t believe he was actually cheating me. Every time I think about it, I get fucking pissed.”

“Man, chill. Sometimes us niggas fuck up. Don’t act like y’all females be innocent.”

“I don’t know about females, but what I do know is that I was loyal to his cheating ass.”

“I don’t like seeing you sad. You want me to beat that nigga’s ass,” Dillon joked.

Aimee giggled. “No, Dillon, I don’t want my two favorite men to be fighting.”

Dillon stood to his feet. “Come on and lets go get something to eat. I need to cheer you up.”

“Boy, you know I ain't passing up no meal. Let’s go,” Aimee said and got up from the couch.

She grabbed her purse and then followed Dillon outside. Aimee locked her door and then got inside of Dillon’s car. During the drive, Aimee filled Dillon in on the scene at her father’s house. Russell hadn't called her since then, and that made Aimee’s blood boil. She felt like she didn’t know her father anymore. The once loving man who Aimee had grown up with was now a complete stranger to her.

Dillon pulled up in a gas station and parked. “I'm about to grab some cigarillos. Here, find some music to play,” he said and gave Aimee his phone.

Aimee grabbed the phone and watched Dillon get out. She went through his music trying to decide what to play. Just as she picking a song, a text message came through.

“Why the fuck is he texting him?” Aimee whispered to herself.

She opened Dillon’s text messages and couldn’t believe the conversation.

To Russ

Where’s the rest of my fuckin money? I know that insurance money came thru by now.

From Russ

When I get it then you’ll have it. Now stop fucking texting me.

To Russ

Bitch nigga, how about I tell the twins how you hired me to get the job done?

From Russ

That would mean telling on yourself, and you're not about that life.

To Russ

Just how Jo’s brake line got cut don’t think yours can’t get the same. Try me.

Oh my God,
Aimee thought as she covered her mouth. She wanted this to all be a dream. Aimee was praying that what she’d just read wasn’t true. Her heart rate accelerated as Dillon got back in the car. Oblivious to her facial expression, Dillon drove off. Aimee was still silent as she tried to process the truth.

“Why didn’t you put on some music?” Dillon asked.

“Did you kill my mother?” Aimee asked, getting straight to the point.

Dillon nervously looked back and forth between Aimee and the road. “What are you talking about?”

“You know what I'm talking about! Did you kill my fucking mother?” Aimee shouted.

“Man, you trippin.’”

“You mothafucka!” Aimee screeched and began to rain punches all over Dillon.

“Aimee chill,” Dillon pleaded as he tried to watch the road.

His pleas fell on deaf ears because Aimee was relentlessly hitting Dillon with some strong punches. Dillon tried to his best to block her fist, but when she hit him in his eye, his vision blurred. Dillon felt the car swerve as Aimee continued to pummel his face.

“Oh shit!” Dillon yelled.

Aimee looked forward and saw that the car was headed for a pole. She closed her eyes and braced herself for the oncoming crash.

“Fuck!”
