She
looked into his eyes and nodded.

Can’t
we just…” she started before he shook his head. “And
there is a doctor I know…one of my clients referred her. I
have her number,” she said as she pulled out the business card
Maura had given her from her purse. Steven looked at her and shook
his head.

You
are trying to get out of this,” he said. She looked at him and
opened her mouth to speak but he put a finger on her lips. “The
doctor said the test should be done on the first or second day of
your cycle,” he said. “And I already know that this is
your second day,” he added. She shrugged and nodded. “Come
on. This will be over before you know it,” he said as they
walked back into the hospital.

Are
you going to stay with me?” she asked in a low voice.

Steven
kissed her hand.

I’m
not going to leave your side,” he said. Somehow, that made her
feel better.

But
as she sat in the examination room with her feet in stirrups, she was
not sure she wanted to know what the results were. Time seemed to
slow down as they waited for the results and she could almost hear
her heart beating in her ears. “Do you want to go home and rest
up? I’ll come with you,” he said. She smiled and nodded.
That was the best thing to do anyway.

When
they got home, she curled up in front of the TV and turned it on.
Steven looked at her, pitying her waiting for her to go to sleep but
she was just there, sitting there staring blankly into space. He
didn’t know when it happened but it seemed like hours had gone
by before she finally drifted off. He sat there and stroked her arm
wondering how she would be the next day when the results finally came
through…

The
loud ringing of the phone is what woke him up. Steven tried to grab
the phone as fast as he could but it was too late, Julie was already
up. He looked at the phone and exhaled loudly wondering if he should
tell her who it was. She pulled herself up and looked at him.

Who
is it?” she asked.

The
OBGYN,” he said.

Answer
it,” she said in a commanding voice. Steven looked at her as
she pulled herself up. “Answer it,” she said. Again. She
held her breath as she watched him slide his finger across the phone
screen to answer it.

Mr.
Davenport. This is Dr. Solloway,” the doctor said. Steven
nodded as if the doctor could see him. “Is your wife
available?” the young female doctor asked. Steven nodded again.

Yes…of
course. She is right here,” he said before he handed Julie the
phone.

This
is Julie…Davenport,” Julie said with much difficulty.

Good
morning, Mrs. Davenport. I just wanted to let you know that the
results are out,” the doctor said. Julie looked at Steven.

Okay.”
She didn’t know what else to say.

I
would appreciate it if you came in, sometime today,” the doctor
continued. Julie shrugged and rubbed her eyes.

I
don’t understand. Why can’t you just give us the results
over the phone?” she asked.

Well,
that’s not protocol,” the doctor said.

What?
What’s going on?” Steven asked.

The
doctor wants us to go in,” Julie said.

Steven
nodded.

What
time?” he asked.

Sometime
today,” Julie said. Steven looked at his wrist watch. It was
eight in the morning.

Tell
her we’ll be there in a few hours,” he said. She looked
at him unsure of the decision he was making for her. “You know
we have to,” he said as he looked at her.

She
took a long deep breath and nodded.

Mrs.
Davenport. Are you there?” Dr. Solloway asked snapping Julie
back to the reality of the moment.

Yeah.
I am. We’ll be there in a couple of hours,” she said
before the doctor thanked her and hung up. She looked at Steven and
shrugged. “I’ll go have a shower,” she said before
she got up and walked towards the bedroom. Steven looked at her and
slowly followed her to the bedroom.

After
a long shower, Julie still felt tired. All she wanted was to take a
pill and go back to sleep and hopefully never wake up. She put on a
pair of blue jeans and a pink flowered sleeveless top. She matched
this with a pair of black open toed heels before putting on some
light makeup. Her hair was pulled back into a bun because she was not
up for straightening it that morning. When Steven saw her, he smiled.
She looked beautiful.

You
look amazing,” he said as he looked at her.

You
don’t look so bad yourself,” she said as she looked at
him. She wasn’t lying either. He looked dashing in his black
pants and gray shirt. He was the only person she knew, the only man
she knew who could pull off an official look in such a casual sexy
way. As they drove to the hospital, they were both quiet wondering
what they were supposed to say, wondering which words were right and
which were not.

We
could get coffee from the Java Hut at the hospital,” he said.

She
looked at him and forced a smile.

Sounds
good,” she said.

Good,”
he said before turning his attention back to the road.

When
they got to the hospital, Steven got them coffee and some blueberry
muffins. They had their high sugar breakfast in the car as they
waited for the minutes to go by but even then, Julie could not shake
the feeling she had. It was like her world was coming to an end.

Ready?”
Steven asked when the clock struck ten. She took a deep breath and
nodded before she climbed out of the car. With every step that took
them closer to Dr. Solloway’s office, the harder and faster her
heartbeat was. Steven squeezed her hand when they got to the door.

I’m
okay,” she said as she softly knocked on the door.

Come
in,” Dr. Solloway called from inside. She took a deep breath
and opened the door. “Mr. and Mrs. Davenport. Please come in,”
Dr. Solloway said as they walked in.

Doctor,”
Steven said as he and Julie sat down in front of the doctor’s
desk.

Mrs.
Davenport…” the doctor started before Julie shook her
head.

Julie…please,”
she said in a soft voice.

Well,
Julie your results are in and I have to ask, are you okay if I give
them to you with your husband present?” Dr. Solloway asked.
Julie looked at Steven and nodded. “Well, I’m afraid I
don’t have good news,” she started.

Julie
took a long deep breath.

Just
say it,” she said in a small voice.

Well,
the test revealed that you have a good number of eggs. But your CT
revealed something else,” Dr. Solloway said as she handed Julie
an x-ray. “Have you ever had any work done on your womb?”
she asked. Julie looked at the x-ray and then at the doctor in
confusion.

What?”
she asked.

Steven
looked at her.

There
are the scars on your stomach…” he started. “But
they are hardly noticeable and you’ve never told me about them
so I never wanted you to talk about something you were not
comfortable talking about…” his words trailed off.

Julie
shook her head.

I
had an accident in college. I wasn’t wearing my seatbelt and I
went flying through the windshield,” she said.

The
doctor nodded. “Well, that makes sense now.”

What
makes sense?” Julie asked.

Your
womb has a lot of scar tissue. And because of that you…well,
your womb is not strong enough to carry a pregnancy to term,”
Dr. Solloway said. “But the reality of the matter is that you
actually can get pregnant but it would take a toll on you,” she
said. Julie felt like she had just been shot in the head. “But
the important thing is that there are other options like adoption and
surrogacy.” Julie was not listening anymore. All she wanted to
do was cry…and she did. She didn’t know why she couldn’t
control herself but the doctor was talking and she was no longer
listening. Steven was at her side trying hopelessly to comfort her
but she was inconsolable.

Chapter Six

Against
her better judgment and Steven’s advice, Julie had chosen to go
to work, even though she would have rather just stayed home,
especially after the doctor’s news. She was standing in a town
house downtown as a client checked it out. Normally, she would have
taken the tour right next to the client pointing out the highlights
of the property but somehow, she couldn’t even bring herself to
move from the spot she was in. The doctor’s voice was ringing
in her ears as if it was a tape playing on repeat.

“…
you
have too much scar tissue in your womb…the accident you had
has rendered you incapable of carrying a child…”

Did
the floor boards come with the house or…” Julie’s
client asked as she walked back into the room. Julie looked up at her
and she suddenly became aware of the tears streaming down her face.
“Oh my God, are you okay?” the woman asked as she walked
towards Julie.

I’m
sorry Angela…I’m just not having the best day,”
Julie said as she rummaged through her bag. Angela pulled out a pack
of pocket tissues from her handbag and handed them to her.

We
can do this another day if you are not feeling up to it,”
Angela said as she looked at Julie who was now shaking her head.

No
I can…” Julie started before Angela shook her head.

You
don’t look like you are up to it and honestly I can always take
another day off sweetie,” Angela said. Julie nodded as Angela
led her to the living room. “Here, have a seat. Want me to call
someone?” she asked as Julie sat down. Julie shook her head.
“There is no way I am leaving you here by yourself.”

I’ll
call my husband,” Julie said as she looked at Angela.

I’ll
just stick around until he gets here. Just to be sure you’re
okay,” Angela said. Julie looked at her and smiled as she
called Steven. The phone rang for a long minute before she looked up.
“Not answering?” Angela asked.

He’s
probably in a meeting or something,” Julie said.

Anyone
else?” Angela asked.

Julie
nodded as she dialed Meg.

Hey
girl. What’s up?” Meg asked when she picked up.

Hey,
are you busy?” Julie asked.

No,
why?” Julie looked at Angela who was nodding at her.

I’m
texting you an address. You need to come over ASAP. I’ll
explain later,” Julie said before she hung up.

Listen,”
Angela said as she took a seat next to Julie. “Whatever is
happening with you, I’m sure it is not that bad,” she
said.

Julie
looked at her and shook her head.

There
is no way you could possibly know that,” she said.

Angela
smiled.

I
have been to hell and back. And if I can still afford to have a smile
on my face then so can you,” she said.

Julie
brushed off a tear and looked at her client now turned therapist.

Really?”
she asked a little bit more cynically than she thought. She could not
picture a world where flashy Angela had ever been sad. If she had any
more money she would have had the roads paved in diamonds.

Yes
really,” Angela said. “Listen honey, there is always
light at the end of the tunnel and there is no way a beautiful woman
like you can tell me she has given up on everything that’s
good,” she added.

Julie
looked at her and leaned back on the couch.

Really?
Right now it feels like I’m at the end of…everything,”
she said as a tear rolled down her cheek. Angela smiled at her and
took Julie’s hand in hers. “I don’t think I can
live like this,” she said as another tear rolled down her other
cheek. Angela moved closer to her and put an arm around her shoulders
as Julie began sobbing. She hated being this weak in the presence of
her client but it was like there was no holding herself back. She was
slowly realizing that Steven and the doctor were both right. She
should have stayed home. She was still sobbing when Meg finally came.

Oh
my God, Julie. What the hell happened?” she asked as she looked
at Angela. “I’m Meg. Julie’s my best friend,”
she said as she took a seat next to Julie. Julie pulled away from
Angela and brushed off her tears.

I’m
Angela. I’m so sorry to meet you like this but I just didn’t
want to leave her all alone when she was like this…”
Angela started shaking her head. “I don’t know what is
going on. She won’t talk about it,” she added as Meg
knelt in front of Julie and looked into her eyes.

It’s
okay, sweetie,” she said as Julie’s phone rang loudly.

That’s
probably….Steven. I had…had called him earlier,”
Julie said.
