The Downtown Presbyterian Church in Nashville is architecturally largely as described. Its mysterious and extraordinary Egyptian revival sanctuary can be seen at http://www.dpchurch.com/ dpctour.htm. As stated in the book, it served as a Union hospital during the Civil War (designated Hospital 8). Today, its small but ardent congregation stands steadfast with the poor and oppressed of Nashville.

The Nation, where much of the book occurs, is based on the west Nashville neighborhood known to locals as the Nations. It borders Tennessee Village, a large complex which is home to many refugees from around the world. The stories that occur inside these locations would fill many books.

The pub Seanachie's has long been closed, but it has been lovingly reopened for the purposes of this book.

Grateful thanks are extended to Tom Thurmon, assistant district attorney of Davidson County; Laura Dykes, assistant public defender; Dr. Currie Myers, Ph.d; Jennifer Thomas; Dick Augustus; the entire staff at Brushy Mountain Prison; Randy Tatel with the Coalition to Abolish State Killing; and Dr. David Alfery, who assisted with many medical details. Also helpful were Bruce Benjamin and John Newton in the Material Science Division of EMSL Analytical. Thanks as well to the band Switchfoot, whose music inspired during the writing of this book. A line of homage is buried in these pages.

Thanks to the extraordinary Jane Dystel, Miriam Goderich, and Marjorie Braman. True professionals, all. Also, thanks to Mom and Dad, great supporters through thick and thin. And most of all, thanks to Dianne, the love of my life.

Much respect to the many lost boys of Sudan who honored me with their personal stories of courage. To sit in their living rooms and hear of their lives was an inestimable privilege. This book is dedicated to them. To learn more about their extraordinary story or to donate to their cause, go to http://www.crs.org/.
