He tangled one hand in Jessie’s silken hair and closed his eyes, breathing in the aroma of her scent. Sunshine and woman mingled with the spicy haze of the bay’s treated water, and somehow, he was content.

He had no desk job, and there was no Mission team to lead. He had a safe haven to rest and recover, and a strange ally in the mysterious witch that owned it. Though he had no answers to give, no direction to take them as they began this new life, he had something stronger. Something that would bolster him through the darkest nights.

Jessie stirred, splayed one long-fingered hand over his chest and sighed. In that whisper-soft sound, Silas heard relief. Hope. Comfort. His name.

They were alive. They were alive and she loved him.

It was more than enough.
