“You will be,” Johnnie said.
“Davey, please,” Cassy whispered. “I wanted us to have a chance.”
“I’m in love with someone else,” Davey said. “I’m in love with Anna.”
“Well, with that said,” Peter cut in, “Cassy needs to go home now and talk to her lawyer and this is done. I already talked to that web site and they’re going to run a follow up article with the paternity test results and then all of this goes away. Final. Done.”
Davey looked at Cassy and shook his head. She had tears in her eyes. A part of him felt bad for her, for whatever reason. Maybe she really believed Davey was the father of her baby or maybe she just wanted the fantasy of it.
Either way, it wasn’t Davey’s worry anymore.
“Cassy, just leave,” Davey said. “Before anything gets worse.”
Cassy nodded and retreated from the hospital room.
“I’m sorry,” Peter said. “I got your message and you sounded pissed. But by the time I tried to call you back and I got the call myself... then this mess... what are you doing fighting a guy with a knife?”
Johnnie laughed. “What do you expect? We’re a bunch of hopeless romantic rockstars... and we think we’re invincible.”
“I’m not invincible,” Davey said, “I’m just in love.”
(22)
Davey rang the doorbell, refusing to let it get to him. But it did. He didn’t want to think about what had happened the last time he rang the doorbell.
That wouldn’t happen again.
It couldn’t.
When Anna answered the door, her mouth fell open.
“Anna, I love you,” Davey said.
It needed to be said and done that way for sure.
“Davey... what are you...”
“Cassy lied to you,” Davey said. “To me. About everything.”
“I came to the hospital.”
“I know.”
“She stopped me. She told me you were her baby’s father. I didn’t want to cause more problems for you. I should have fought... but I thought of Donald...”
Davey couldn’t help himself as he put his hands to Anna’s face. He held her, feeling the passionate connection he needed every day for the rest of his life.
“I’m not Donald’s father,” Davey said. “She lied about everything, Anna.”
“That poor baby,” Anna whispered.
Davey smiled. “That’s why I love you. You’re worried about Donald.”
“Aren’t you?”
“Of course. I already took care of it. When he turns eighteen, he’ll have a small trust waiting. Just in case Cassy keeps his life going in this direction.”
“You did that? Even though you’re not his father?”
“I’m still a man,” Davey said. “And I know the pain of having something missing in your heart.”
Anna kissed him. Davey didn’t expect it, but he wanted it. He pushed, forcing Anna into her house. She kicked the door shut and parted her lips, finally giving Davey the kiss he had been dreaming about since the altercation with Anna’s ex.
His hands moved on her body with ease. Every spot, every curve, even up to her hair. He couldn’t get enough of her.
“Are you in pain?” Anna asked as she pulled away.
“No,” Davey said.
“Follow me then.”
Anna took Davey’s hand and rushed up the steps. Davey followed Anna to her bedroom. She grabbed Davey by the pants, cutting straight to the chase.
“Wow, look at you go,” Davey said.
“I need you so bad,” Anna said. “Now and forever.”
Davey put his hands over Anna’s and stopped her. She looked at him. He nodded at her. “Yes, Anna. Now and forever.”
They kissed again and Davey lifted Anna, turning and placing her on the bed. Anna lifted her own shirt off and reached back for her bra. Davey stepped back and watched as Anna’s sexy, sultry body came to life. Her breathing was intense but nothing like the look in her eyes. He’d never seen a woman look at him like that before.
The look of true passion.
The look of love.
Davey repaid Anna and took his clothes off. He left his shirt for last, hoping she would focus on his erection instead of the stitches in his chest.
She didn’t.
“Oh, Davey...”
“Don’t say a thing,” Davey said and came at her.
Anna crawled back on the bed, teasing Davey. When she ran out of room, Davey thrust at her, entering her. The tightness on Davey was instant, her warm body accepting him. Davey stayed inside Anna, his hands curling around the pillows on Anna’s bed. He put his nose to her nose.
Anna touched the stitches and swallowed.
“Just another scar,” Davey whispered.
Anna slid her hand around Davey’s neck, her nails digging at him. She moaned and Davey gently thrust at her. He moved smoothly, savoring Anna’s body. Loving her body.
They kissed and didn’t stop kissing. The harder Davey dug at Anna, the faster he moved, he refused to stop kissing her. Any second not spent kissing Anna he would someday regret. Anna’s hands were tight against Davey’s body. When she found the other set of stitches and touched them, Davey groaned.
“Sorry,” Anna whispered with her and Davey’s mouths still touching.
“I love you,” Davey said.
“I love you too, Davey,” Anna replied.
They let their lips touch as they closed their eyes, losing themselves in their romance. They had each other and together they climaxed. They held each other in Anna’s bed. And together, without speaking a word, they knew nobody would ever compare and nothing would ever compare to what they had at that moment.
“Can we still go to Colorado?” Anna asked.
“Of course. We’ll fly out tomorrow. This time, I promise.”
“My boss is going to be pissed,” Anna said.
“You’re a music and art teacher, nothing more,” Davey said. “Trust me, Anna, I’m going to take care of you. Of us.”
“Davey... you can’t...”
“I can. And I will.”
**
Anna opened her mouth and Davey’s cell phone started to ring.
Davey growled and climbed over Anna, doing so purposely to keep his naked body touching hers. Anna moaned and giggled.
Davey reached for his pants and found the phone.
“Danny,” he said. “Probably going to break my balls for not practicing.”
She couldn’t help herself as she looked down and around, admiring the perfect nude body on top of hers. Nobody except Davey ever sparked her sexual needs like this... nor did someone make her heart race and her stomach feel fluttery like Davey did.
He was perfect. His flaws. His scars. His hope. Not to mention his talent. Anna laughed to herself as she thought being able to go backstage with Davey at Chasing Cross shows.
She still didn’t understand time and how it worked. But time had caused her hurt and scars but it also brought her Davey.
And that was a fair trade.
“Oh, man, I’m so sorry...”
Anna looked at Davey. He moved and sat up, the phone to his ear.
“Danny, bro, I’m on my way, okay? I’ll be there in a few minutes... where’s Johnnie? Okay. I’m going to call him quick. Please just stay put. Don’t do anything stupid.”
Davey ended the call and looked over his shoulder. His eyes were glazed and he shook his head.
Anna sat up, pulling the sheet over her chest.
“Davey, what’s wrong?”
“Danny...” He shook his head. “Johnnie’s on his way back to his cabin. But... he got a call...”
“What’s wrong?”
“Danny and Johnnie are brothers but their relationships with their father were very different.”
“Okay,” Anna said. She touched Davey’s back.
“He’s dead,” Davey said. “Fuck. He’s dead.”
“Who’s dead?” Anna asked.
“Their father... Danny’s father is dead.”
