Kate L. Mary is a
stay-at-home mother of four and an Air Force wife. She spent most of her life
in a small town just north of Dayton, Ohio where she and her husband met at the
age of twelve. Since their marriage in 2002, they have lived in Georgia,
Mississippi, South Carolina, and California.
Kate’s love of books
and writing has helped her survive countless husbandless nights. She
enjoys any post-apocalyptic story – especially if zombies are involved – as
long as there is a romantic twist to give the story hope. Kate prefers
nerdy, non-traditional heroes that can make you laugh to hunky pieces of
man-meat, and her love of wine and chocolate is legendary among her friends and
family. She currently resides in Oklahoma with her husband and children.

Apocalypse
Lullaby
by The Wailin’ Jennys-
I
just really like the ton of this song for the beginning of the book. Vivian is
in a really low place and the people around her are scared and sick. It just
feels right.
Demons
by Imagine
Dragons-
To me, this was the perfect theme song for Axl. He has all this inner
turmoil built up from the past and he's struggling to figure out who he is
independent of his brother. He wants to be a good guy and do what's right, but
he has to fight against the way he was raised. I especially love the line "look
into my eyes, it's where my demons hide." That right there was so Axl to
me.
I Know You Care
by Ellie Goulding-
This is the song for when Vivian is just getting better. She was so out of it,
but as the fog clears all the things Axl did for her come back to her.
"There's trouble ahead and you know it." They know they're facing
something major.
Wicked Game
by Phillip Phillips-
This is Vivian's song. She wants Axl, but she doesn't believe she deserves love
and she doesn't trust people. The tone is just perfect for the book, too. I'm a
big Chris Isaak fan, but I prefer this version of the song for my story.
"The world was on fire but no one could save me but you." That line
is perfect for Axl and Vivian—they save each other. They both come from damaged
pasts and they teach each other that they are worth something. She teaches him
that he's valuable and he has something to contribute, and he teaches her that
she is worthy of love.
Radioactive
by Imagine Dragons-
Yes, this song is everywhere. But it's perfect so I added it, anyway. I put it
when they look down over San Francisco from the hotel window and see the
zombies for the first time. I don't really feel like I need to explain much
more—it just fits.
Keep Breathing
by Ingrid Michaelson-
This is Vivian locking herself in the bathroom after seeing the zombies—having
her little breakdown.
Leave
my Body
by Florence and the Machine-
This
song is for after Vivian’s freak-out. As she starts to come to grips with the
new reality and gets to know the group she’s with. She’s kind of shedding her
past and embracing her new place is this crazy world.
Sail
by AWOL Nation-
This is going out to find a car so they can get the hell out of the city.
I liked the tone and pace of the car—violent but not hectic.
Latter Days
by Over the Rhine-
This is for how Vivian feels after Emily dies. I like the melancholy tone and
the words are perfect. "Nothing much here but our broken dreams." The
lines about dancing made me think of Vivian's dreams about Emily. Plus, I'm a
little biased since Over the Rhine is one of my favorite bands.
Devil Knows
You're Dead
by Delta Spirit-
I put this when they're driving, after Mike is killed. I really liked the words—kind
of how everyone is feeling about the people they've lost.
Wanted
by Rachel Diggs-
Another song for Axl. This is Vivian and Axl talking about their past and her
trying to tell him he's too hard on himself. I think it illustrates both how he
feels about himself and how she feels about him.
Yesterday Was Hard on All of Us
by Fink-
This song was perfect for the end. Emily is dead, they've driven out into
the middle of nowhere, they're running from zombies and Mitchell locks them
out. They've been beaten and they don't know what to do next.
