“Prince Virgil,” Gabriel greeted, grasping the man’s arm soundly, turning to the third person in their group. “Mage Bianji,” he beamed in a surprised tone and swept her into an embrace. “It has been too long. You look well.”
“As do you, my friend. I hope you can stay long enough to be beaten in a game of Tiles.”
“I wish I could, but I am up to here in Classings,” he replied holding his hand level with his head.
“How many more to go?” Robyn asked.
“
Thousands
,” he breathed. “I am in-between them now as we break for lunch.”
“Before you go, there is someone you must meet. Breem, darling come here,” Bianji called to a man in a short blue cloak. The handsome bearded man in his mid-thirties broke from his group and stepped up with a warm smile. “My betrothed. We are to be married this spring.”
Gabriel clasped the man’s arm in both hands. “Excellent catch, mate.”
‘Mate
?’ Robyn mouthed.
‘You’ve been spending too much time with the Gaelsins.’
Gabriel pulled the man closer to whisper something, likely threatening him if he harmed Bianji, but the man broke away with a smile and clapped Gabriel on the shoulder. Robyn offered her own congratulations.
“Do not let me keep you,” Bianji nodded. “Your Grace, I hope to see more of you during the festival. Gabriel, do not stay away,” she said and stretched up to kiss his cheek. “Prince Virgil, always a pleasure.”
Gabriel sighed as he looked down at Robyn with that gaze of impending work calling him. “Go,” she smiled. “Return if you can.”
“I will try,” he leaned in to kiss her hand. “Virgil, keep a watchful eye on her.”
“I am, Head Mage.”
“Farewell,” Gabriel nodded, seized Void, and vanished in a blur of white.
“I will never get used to that look,” Robyn whispered and sipped her drink.
“It is rather alarming. Would you like to walk further, or shall I take you to your rooms?”
She looked to the sky, seeing the sun falling into the west. “I would like to refresh before supper.”
“Very well,” he smiled, gently pulling her out of the atrium and up into the grand palace.
Prince Virgil stood in the foyer of Robyn’s room, watching as the Queen paced before the windows majestically. She cut such a beautiful outline.
‘Please be mine,’
he thought.
Robyn looked back at him with an inquisitive expression and he wiped the sad expression from his face. “How can you ever leave the palace? The view is too breathtaking.”
He chuckled and strode to a table, pouring them two goblets of Dastanian red. “I would miss the breathtaking views outside my palace if I never left.” He proffered one to her with a bow of his head. “In fact, I intend to take you on a journey after Eventide to see the lands. Perhaps you will find something else to take your breath away.”
She lifted her goblet to him. “I look forward to it.”
“I am sure we will have an exciting adventure.” Virgil hid his smile behind his drink.
‘I may yet win your heart. If not, then I will steal it.’
