To Sadie he said, “It’ll be okay. They have someone on the way and we are safe here. Stay with me.”

“I’m okay, Master. I’m glad you are here to keep me safe,” she answered as she cuddled into his arms.

“Yes I’m still here. No I don’t hear anyone at our door. I will go out and see.” Crawling back into the living room and leaving Sadie in the closet, he slowly made his way to the door and window. Rising to his knees, he looked out the window and saw several police cars and emergency vehicles in the parking lot. Standing, he went to the door and went outside to talk to the police.

Getting and giving what information he could, he went to get Sadie, so she could also give her side of the story and some history on the situation.

While she was giving her story to the police, one of the people from the condo next door was brought out in handcuffs.

“I’ll get you, bitch. You’ll learn to mind your own fucking business when I get done with you.”

Sadie visibly shuddered and Dave wrapped her in his arms. “Keep that scum away from her!” He growled, totally pissed that the police would expose her so. “Officer, if you’re done, I need to take Miss Sanders somewhere she can relax and be safe. Here’s my card with my name and numbers, you can reach her through me if there is anything else you need from her.” Turning to Sadie, he said, “Come on, girl, let’s gather up your things and we’ll go home, then you can take a nice hot bath.” With a scathing look to the cops, he let her back into the condo to pack a small bag.

“Pack what you’ll need for a week or so. We’ll need some time to get this straightened out.”

“Why do I need to leave if they are going to be in jail, won’t I be safe?” she asked.

“The police think one or more of them may have gotten away and it’s not safe for you here. Until I know it’s safe I don’t want you here alone. You’ll stay with me until I know it’s safe,” he stated. It wasn’t an offer. She would do as he said.

“I can go and stay with Jenna and Kyle, or one of my sisters.”

“You. Will. Stay. With. Me. Now stop arguing and get packed. I want to get out of here. What you don’t get tonight we can come back for tomorrow or I will send someone. One more word and you will be punished. You have five minutes.” He was stressed enough with the police and didn’t need to fight her too.

Sadie knew Dave was correct and that staying at the condo alone was not safe and she didn’t really want to be there. She could and probably should go and stay with one of her sisters, but Dave was very insistent and the prospect of staying with him sent a tingle down to her pussy. She wanted more out of their relationship, but this was moving way too fast. She had learned from the past that when things went too fast, something usually got screwed up along the way. She definitely didn’t want that to happen to her and Dave. Sadie scrambled to pack while Dave stood in her bedroom doorway, arms crossed over his chest, tapping his foot and looking at his watch. “Time’s up, what you don’t have we’ll get another time. You’ve earned one punishment for not being ready. Grab your keys and let’s go. If you need your car, I will send someone to get it tomorrow. Tonight you will ride with me.”

Grabbing the keys and her bag, he locked her door and took her arm and half pulled, half dragged her out to his truck. Throwing her things in the back, he opened the driver side door and lifted her up. “Scoot to the middle and put your seat belt on. I want you beside me.”

Doing as he commanded, Sadie was glad to be sitting beside him where she could lean against him. The evening was starting to catch up to her and she was exhausted. Her adrenaline rush was starting to wear off and she was crashing hard.

Dave knew Sadie was going to drop and drop fast, and he wanted to be somewhere he could hold her and comfort her before that happened. He needed to be home now.

She was so tired, and why was she crying? Thoughts of what could have happened overwhelmed her mind. What if Dave had been shot, what if she had been shot, had anyone been shot? She hadn’t even thought to ask about her neighbors. What if one of the children playing had gotten shot? Oh my God, her neighbors had guns and had shot them in the house. How could anyone do that? How irresponsible were some people? Didn’t they care about the welfare of the people around them? Apparently not.

Dave could see Sadie struggling with her thoughts. “Girl, tell me what’s going on in that busy mind of yours? Saying it out loud will help.”

So she did, she spat out every question running through her mind without stopping. How she could say so much without stopping for a breath, Dave had no idea.

“Okay, girl, okay. No one was hurt, they were apparently firing at a target on the wall. None of the bullets made it outside their apartment. Everyone is okay. The police are going to do their best to find all of them and make sure you are safe. You will stay with me until this is solved. I’ve already notified Evan. He and his security team are already working on the situation. Everything will be okay.” They had arrived at the club by this time and Dave parked his truck and lifted Sadie from it. Carrying her, he took her into the club by the back door and straight to his suite. Not setting her down for a minute, he carried her straight back to the Jacuzzi tub. Setting her on the vanity, he started to fill the tub. Turning to Sadie, he said, “I think we both need a drink. I’ll get us a scotch. Why don’t you get into the tub and I’ll be right back.” Helping her down from the vanity and walking toward the mini bar. He turned to see her following him like a lost puppy. “What’s up, girl? I thought you’d be getting in the tub.”

“Don’t want to be alone,” she muttered, not sure why she was following him.

‘Okay, girl, I’ll just come back with you. Let’s get a scotch, shall we. I think we both need it.”

“Okay,” Sadie answered in a monotone. She had never drunk scotch in her life, but how bad could it be? Taking the glass from him, she tossed it back just like a shooter. Choking and gasping, she cried, “How can you drink that shit? It tastes like shoe polish. Ugh!”

Trying not to laugh, Dave said, “It’s an acquired taste. Once you’ve drank enough, you’ll kill all your taste buds and won’t notice it anymore.” Hugging her, he turned and got her a bottle of water, “Here, try this to see if it helps.”

“Thanks, ugh…I don’t know how people can drink that stuff.” Wrapping her arms around herself, she shivered.

“Come on, let’s get you in that tub. Between that and the scotch, it should relax you.”

“Will you get in with me? I really don’t want to be alone right now.” Not normally a needy or whiny person, Sadie wasn’t sure why she was acting the way she was. She just knew she was glad Dave had brought her home and she wasn’t alone.

They both crawled in the tub and Sadie finally was able to relax. Dave was still worked up about what was going on, and couldn’t wait to talk to Evan and get a report, but he needed to take care of his girl first. Once he had Sadie settled in his bed, he could make the calls he needed to.

Evan was the club security manager and he helped Kyle manage the bodyguard business. Evan, Craig, Kyle and Dave had all been in the same unit in the Air Force and were closer than some brothers. Evan and Dave were very close in appearance, Evan was six foot three inches tall, two hundred thirty pounds, dirty blond hair and charcoal gray eyes. Together he and Dave had had some wild escapades in the Air Force.

Having gotten Sadie settled in his bed, Dave went to the living room to make some calls. It didn’t matter how late it was Evan was always there for him and answered on the first ring. “Well, boss, it’s definitely SNAFU, but I’m sure we can get it under control. From the information I can ascertain, Sadie’s neighbors are drug dealers, and not small time either. Apparently tonight, they were practicing for a deal that is going down soon. DEA is involved and they had a watch on the place. Let me tell you, they were not happy to see local law enforcement get involved. Quote unquote, they said, “Those local yokels can fuck up anything.” I have a meeting scheduled with the team leader for tomorrow and recommend that you and Sadie sit in. I’m sure they would like to use her condo as an observation point. Maybe you can discuss this with her ahead of time. I’m sure you can think of somewhere she could stay for a while. I know the government will pay handsomely for the use of her place and once they clear out, you know things will be safe.”

“Yes, I’ll bring the options up to her. Thanks for all your hard work, now get some sleep. What time is your meeting set up for?”

“Ten hundred hours, here at the club.”

“See you there. Thanks again.” Dave sat, sipping another glass of scotch and pondering all the options. The only one that worked for his was to have Sadie stay with him until the situation resolved itself. That way when he was not available to watch her, Evan or a member of his team would be. In his eyes there really was no other way. Now to convince Sadie of it. Sitting there and thinking, Dave realized how tired he was and decided to go to bed. Sadie was waiting in his bed and he couldn’t think of any place else he would rather be.

Chapter Three

Dave woke later than usual the next morning. Having Sadie in his arms for the second night in a row felt wonderful. Could he ever go back to sleeping alone again, he wondered? Feeling rushed, he called to the kitchen to have breakfast delivered and woke Sadie. He wanted her awake and alert for their talk before the meeting with Evan and the DEA.

Heading her toward the shower, he went to his kitchen to make coffee to go with their breakfast. He could have ordered it with their meal, but he liked a special blend that was only available in his kitchen.

Hearing the shower end, he took a cup to Sadie and sat to watch her dress. When she started to brush out her hair, he sat on the bed and pulled her between his legs and did it himself. He had always enjoyed brushing a woman’s hair and found it very soothing for both of them.

Taking Sadie out to the living room he sat her in a chair. Explaining what Evan had told him and what was going to happen at the meeting with the DEA, he asked her to consider the use of her apartment for the surveillance operation.

Just as he finished, a knock came at the door. Thinking it was their breakfast, he opened to find Evan standing there.

“Dave, I have a report. Oh…good morning, Sadie. I forgot you were here,” he said, looking a little sheepish. Thinking he should have called Dave, he wondered how much Dave had been able to brief Sadie before he arrived.

“It’s okay, Evan. I’ve already talked to Sadie and she’s up to speed. What new information do you have?”

Letting out a sigh, Evan answered, “The condo next to yours has been being used for illegal drug running. Apparently there are several operatives moving in and out of the place and the DEA has been watching it for quite some time. By calling the police last night you threw a little wrench into their operations, but I think we can make it work in our favor. They have proposed and I’m recommending that you temporarily move out and rent the place to the DEA. After last night it’s reasonable that you would not want to be there and making it a rental makes perfect sense. The DEA can then step up their operations and it will be safer for you when you go home. I can have some of my men help you get everything out and we’ll put it in storage until you can move back. The DEA will pay all moving expenses and storage fees for you as long as they need your condo. We’ll find a place for you here at the club, where my team and I can keep you safe as long as necessary. Any questions?”

Yeah, thought Sadie, about two million. Where should she start? She felt very overwhelmed at this point and as was usual for her when she got overwhelmed she just shut down. Staring blankly ahead, she just sat there.

Dave looked at Evan. “What the fuck?”

Evan quietly answered, “I think she shut down, man. I’ve seen this before, give her a few minutes to process and if she doesn’t come back, then we’ll see what we can do to reengage her. Right now she needs time to process everything that’s going on. Keep quiet and give her some space, but don’t leave her alone.”

“Shit,” answered Dave. They sat watching Sadie, and after a few moments it was like a switch being turned back on and she came out of her silence.

“Oh shit, I did it again, didn’t I?” she said.

“Did what, girl?” Dave asked her.

“Went blank. I do it when I’m overwhelmed. Sometimes I have to shut down for a few and then I regroup and come back on. I tried counseling for a while, but they said it was normal for me and as long as I didn’t get hurt or hurt anyone else in the process it was okay. The only way it would be a problem was if I did it while I was driving or if I didn’t come back. But it still scares me. The doctor compared it to a computer rebooting.”

“Are you okay, girl? If this is too much for you, you can stay here and Evan and I will handle the meeting.” Dave was very concerned and didn’t want to push Sadie anymore.

“Do you think they meant it?” Sadie asked quietly.

“Who meant what, girl?” What was she talking about now, Dave wondered.

“That they would come after me, hurt me. Oh my God, what if they tried to hurt you or someone in my family. I have to get out of here, I need to hide, Maybe I could go to Mexico or….” In a panic now Sadie got up and started running around the room in circles.

Dave looked at Evan, who was as puzzled as he was and they cornered Sadie, trying to slow her down before she hurt herself. “Whoa, girl. Settle down a minute and talk to us. No one can harm you here and no one knows you are here. I’ll make sure you and your family are safe. Come sit with me.” Dave had her in his arms and was trying to calm her down and get her settled.

Sitting on the couch with her in his lap, Evan beside them, he rubbed her back, while Evan pulled her legs into his lap and started rubbing her legs and feet, trying to calm her down.

“I…uh…need…I…I…” Sadie stuttered and couldn’t seem to make a complete sentence. She was very upset and not sure what to do. She didn’t want to put anyone else in danger. Where could she go, what should she do? Struggling to get up, she needed to leave and go…somewhere.
