Zoser
[Na].
King of Egypt during the Old Kingdom (3rd Dynasty). Well known for his stepped pyramid at Saqqara near Memphis in Lower Egypt, one of the earliest pyramids to be built as a royal tomb, and attributed to the architect Imhotep.
Zozimus
[Na].
Greek historian living in the early 6th century
ad
who wrote a history of the last days of the western Roman empire,
Nea Historia
, which is especially important for understanding the collapse of Roman administration in Britain. However, living and working in Greece, Zozimus drew heavily on other works, particularly the twenty-volume
History
of Olympiodorus, an Egyptian Greek, who provided extensive commentary on late Roman times. Zozimus' own work is generally regarded as rather unreliable.
Zvejnieki, Latvia
[Si].
Late Mesolithic and Neolithic cemetery on the northern shore of Lake Burtnieki discovered and excavated by Francis Zagorskis between 1964 and 1971. The site was found to comprise at least 304 graves. A broadly contemporary settlement is known nearby. The site had good preservation of organic materials and grave goods which allow the burials to be divided into two broad groups. The oldest were sprinkled with
OCHRE
and belong to the 5th and 4th millennia
bc
. The later group lacked ochre and date to the 3rd millennium
bc
. Grave goods included perforated elk-teeth pendants, amber pendants, and bone points.
