Smiling, he brought his lips down to hers. “You're such a demanding woman.”

She kissed him softly, then easing slightly back, whispered, “How long do you think it will be before our guests realize we're missing?”

With a wicked chuckle, his arms tightened around her. “Long enough.”

At the same time, down in the kitchen, Brady was doing his best to persuade Hannah to join the rest of the merrymakers while Bridget was at the far end of the cabinet, holding one hand over her ear while straining to hear the voice on the other end of the telephone.

With her hand over the receiver she scolded, “Brady! Shhh! I can't hear a thing.” Turning her attention back to the caller, she finally managed to pick up the sound of a male voice and as she did her face grew pale, and her heart kicked to a rapid thump. “On the res, you said?… Oh…. “Sure.” He gave her quick kiss on the cheek. “Are you headed to the hospital?”

Shaking her head, she stepped through the door and out into the cold night. “No. But I might end up there,” she called back to him.

Before he could ask more, Bridget hurried away from the house. She didn't want her brother to know that it had been his old friend Johnny Chino that she'd been speaking with on the phone. And she especially didn't want Brady to know that she was driving straight to the Mescalero Apache Reservation. He wouldn't understand why Johnny had summoned
her
. And frankly, Bridget didn't, either.
