?” Barb frowned, and her eyes filled with tears. “I'm an adult and had no idea. What's
my
excuse?” She looked up and pinched the bridge of her nose, refusing to let the tears fall. “No. I won't let him make me feel like the bad guy.”

Mac put the scrapbook aside and rested her hand on Barb's. “
He
chose to behave that way.”

Barb nodded. “
He's
the freak, as you like to say.”

They smiled at each other. They were small, but still smiles.
