“Having to love you destroys me every day. Makes me weaker every moment. But you’re in me. In my wings. And the farther I flew away today, the more I understood that you’ve chained me to this ground. If I leave you, I’ll be thinking of you every moment. The only way for me to be free of you is for you take these wings, take this part of me that you’ve filled yourself with. Then I’ll be free,” Camille said. Her words turned to pleas. “Set me free so I can love you the right way. The way that doesn’t feel like I’m going to die, like I’m going to float away in a thousand white feathers. Let me love you without being chained to you. Give me that, and I’ll be with you forever.”

Clark sucked in a breath, his mind reeling from her words. “You’ll stay?”

“I’ll stay. But I want you to take my wings. It has to be you, or else I’ll never convince myself that I’m free from you. Clark, I love you. But I need this freedom from you. Because I won’t be chained to anyone anymore.”

“We will be together?”

Camille drew her sword and held it out in the space between them, offering the hilt to Clark. “If you set me free. Only then. I understand if you don’t want to. I really do. But I needed to say this.”

Clark took the sword, feeling its weight in his hand. “You love me?” he asked, still looking at the steel.

“I always have.”

Finally, he looked up, a grin spreading across his face. “Love at first sight, huh?”

“You’re Clark St. James. Did you really expect anything else? Now wipe that grin off your face. I know I’m a bitch, but you really shouldn’t enjoy this so much. And get the cut right. I don’t want to look like a humpback whale.”

Clark smirked. “I love you too, Cami. Now sit still. I’d hate to accidentally cut your ass and ruin the good view.”
