Chapter Four

Death glared at the clock on the bedside table. He wasn’t particularly angry with it but he had been chained to this bed for three days without another visit from Blade. Had the son-of-a-bitch forgotten about him being chained up in this damned room? Or was he letting Death stew on the fact that he was trapped. Death didn’t know but his mood was becoming increasingly sour. He hadn’t been tortured or starved but he hadn’t been allowed up much either. His muscles ached and he was angry that he couldn’t get up from the bed except when they loosened the chains to allow him to piss. He’d thought they would release him to allow him to use the bathroom and he’d planned to escape when they did. Instead they’d only loosened the chains just enough for him to use some kind of portable potty they set beside the bed. It was undignified.

Death turned to the door glowering darkly, wondering where the hell Becky was. She was the one who had brought him his meals the last few days. Only today she’d not shown up with his breakfast; Crook had delivered it instead. Now she wasn’t here with his lunch either and it worried him. Had something happened to her? It pissed him off royally that he wasn’t able to get up and go find her to assure himself she was all right. His hands twisted in the bedsheets and his body stiffened because he shouldn’t care so much about her safety. He’d tried asking Crook about her but the man had merely told him it was none of his business where she was. Death wasn’t too happy that he couldn’t force Crook to tell him if she was safe or not.

Damn it
.

He needed to quit focusing on the girl and start worrying about getting himself out of this shithole because Blade wasn’t likely to just let him go. He hadn’t kidnapped Death for shits and giggles. Blade wanted something from him or from his club and the sooner Death got out of here, the better. Death allowed a little growl of anger to escape his tight lips. It frustrated him that he had no idea how to get out of these chains. If only he could find something to pick the locks with he could break out of this damned place, or if his damned club would get off their asses and come find him.

Why the hell weren’t they here yet?

He shifted, rolling to his side with his arm above his head, making the chains rattle. He glanced at the bedside table again, checking the time. Seeing the digital clock made him remember the conversation Becky had with Crook when she’d brought it to him. Crook hadn’t been happy about her setting it on the table near his bed.

He’d insisted that it might be used to escape, to which she’d replied, ‘What the hell do you think he’s going to do? Break it open and use the innards as a weapon?’ Crook had looked sheepish when he’d replied that it could be done. Death chuckled a little internally when he’d seen her roll her eyes. Only he wasn’t too far off the mark, Crook should be worried about the clock. If Death wasn’t worried about Becky, he likely would have broken the clock looking for something to pick the lock on these chains with.

Fuck. He really needed to think about something else besides the girl, but even as that thought filtered through his mind he glanced towards the door with another dark scowl.

Jamie tried to hide a frustrated sigh as she looked down at the tiny dictator who was tugging at her skirt. How had she let her brother convince her to watch these little monsters today? Okay, so maybe Mary did watch them every day for months on end and she’d needed a break. She almost snorted when that thought slipped through her head because the woman deserved a medal. This was a shit job and Jamie didn’t know how she dealt with these tiny humans every day. It wasn’t that she didn’t like kids because she loved them just fine, but eight five-year-olds at once was not her cup of tea. It was like being in the midst of an explosion of energy and she knew she would never agree to watch them again.

“I need to pee-peeee,” Kate said, stomping her foot and sticking her thumb into her mouth. James and Chris snickered and danced around the small table in the large room while Robin, Harry, and Mark stood on top of the shelves that lined one wall of the small classroom.

“I know that, Kate. Jenny should be back with Ty in a moment and she will take you. Robin, Harry, and Mark, get off that right now!” she said, her voice an odd screech that she didn’t recognize. Thankfully the three did as they were told after staring at her for a long moment, but when they were down they began tearing the toys out of the toy bin like little demons.

“But I have to go noooow!” Kate cried, still tugging at her skirt.

“Ring around the rosy, weasels are like posies,” James and Chris sang as they ran around the room. One of them grabbed Harry’s arm and dragged him along with them. Damn, why had she thought chocolate was a good idea for a snack? Ever since she’d given it to them about fifteen minutes ago, she’d been dealing with this wild behavior. She kept repeating internally that it was only going to be another hour but it wasn’t helping.

“Hey, that’s mine!” Robin cried, smacking Mark on the chest and grabbing the boat he’d held seconds before.

“No, it’s not, I had it first. Give it back. Give it back,” he was screaming as he chased after her.

“Miss Jamie, Miss Jamie. Mark is trying to steal my toy,” Robin said, now tugging at the other side of her skirt.

“Nuh-uh. I am not. She took it, you were watching. Make her give it back!”

“I have to pee-peeee,” Kate whined.

“Rosy, rosy, everyone’s a weasel,” the boys chanted, and Jamie just wanted to scream at them all to leave her alone. She’d had enough after five hours of this type of behavior. She was about to start crying when Jenny came back into the room, a shocked expression on her face as she looked around at the room. Jamie wanted to snort at the expression on her face. Yep, she was not teacher material, that was for sure. In the ten minutes it took Jenny to take Ty to the bathroom, the room had gone from a well-organized kindergarten classroom to a disaster area.

“Oh my,” Jenny muttered, letting go of Ty’s hand.

Kate was now yelling at the top of her lungs that she needed to pee-pee and the boys were running around the room waving the flags they’d found. Robin was hitting Mark with the boat and she was standing here trying not to go insane while telling herself that she only had another hour. Jenny shook her head. She walked over and took the toy from Robin, sternly reprimanding her for hitting. She made her go sit in the time out chair in the corner of the room. Then she clapped her hands, getting all the children’s attention.

“Everyone sit, it’s story time,” she said and like magic the little demons all rushed to the mat set up for reading time, shoving and jostling for position. Jenny turned to her and whispered with amusement filling her voice, “You can’t let them see weakness or they will take advantage. You have to be firm with them.” She shook her head and motioned to Kate who’d stood up from her place on the mat insisting that she still had to go to the bathroom. “Why don’t you take Kate to the bathroom to give you a little break.” Nodding, she did as she was told because there was no way she was staying with the lot of them alone again today.

It was about forty minutes later after the last child had been picked up by their parent that she finally breathed a happy sigh. Thank goodness the day was over because her feet hurt and she was exhausted. Jenny was cleaning up the project the children had just finished. Jamie watched thinking that she should really help her when Jenny looked over at Jamie and smiled.

“You had a rough day, didn’t you?”

“I don’t know how the two of you do this every day,” Jamie muttered, rubbing her forehead.

“Yeah, people who don’t usually do this have no clue what it’s like. I was surprised when Blade said you were going to help out today. Not that I didn’t think you could do it, it’s just not an easy task and I would think you have better things to do than watch these munchkins.” It didn’t offend Jamie that Jenny treated her like everyone else in her brother’s group of ragtag bikers. It wasn’t their fault that her brother, Lake, and Lissa had convinced everyone she was made of spun glass. She’d been fighting the princess image for more than five years now, since right about the time she realized that she didn’t want to be a princess when she turned seventeen.

It wasn’t easy when Evert was constantly trying to protect her. Not that she blamed him, she’d needed protection for a long time. The Headhunters were a nasty bunch and she knew that firsthand. She could still remember the first time she’d felt unsafe while her brother was off on a run. It was before he’d started finding the ragtag band who lived at the clubhouse now. Lissa was with her that night.

She could still feel the fear that had rushed through her and the panic that still woke her after seven years. Lissa had already started carrying a gun with her by then but it hadn’t helped Jamie that night. A nasty man who they’d called Slither had arrived at the house. He’d been handsome with blonde hair and a pretty face but inside he’d been pure evil. At fifteen she’d never really been completely innocent because of the bikers she’d been raised with but she had been a princess to her brother and Lissa.

That night Lissa was waylaid by one of the men in Slither’s group and Slither had grabbed her as she’d walked by the room he was in. He’d shoved her onto the bed and began ripping her clothes off. She’d fought him, screaming for him to stop, but he’d only laughed. His hands had roughly touched her body, pinching her nipples and jerking on her hair hard. He’d even hit her on the jaw when she wouldn’t stop trying to bite him. The pain from the blow had made her ears ring and her heart had pounded so hard that she wasn’t sure it wouldn’t jump from her chest.

The fear she’d felt coursing through her as she had laid trapped beneath him still came on her at odd times. It would sneak up and smack her in the face when she least expected it. Jamie was grateful that Bam had shown up that night. It was his room they’d been in and Slither had almost gotten her naked when Bam opened the door. Jamie knew she’d been lucky that Bam wasn’t just as sick as Slither. He’d stood in the doorway for a moment watching, his face blank.

“What the fuck, man, get out. Or join us but don’t fucking watch, that shit is creepy,” Slither had grunted.

“You need to go,” Bam had replied.

“The fuck I do, man. I’m busy. Whatever it is can wait.” Slither had turned back to her grabbing her breast, squeezing it too hard and making her cry out as pain burned through her. She was shaking so hard her teeth chattered and she was trying to shove him off her but he was too heavy. Her heart had raced so hard she’d thought it would explode. Fear had been so clear inside her that she’d been unable to catch her breath as she struggled to get away. Slither had pinned her legs and she was unable to get him off her.

“No, it’s a Blue Bandit raid. We need every man there tonight,” Bam commanded.

“Damn. Well fuck. Guess this will have to wait, sweetheart,” he’d said to her as he’d gotten off her and moved towards the door. Jamie had frozen, unable to move because she was afraid if she did he would come back. Bam had stood there in the open doorway, his hand holding the door handle with white knuckles. His jaw looked tight as Jamie had finally managed to move and was gathering together the remnants of her shirt, pulling it up to cover herself. Her body shook like a leaf and her heart pounded with fear that raced through her as she watched her attacker moving from the room.

“You coming?” Slither had asked him, his eyes narrowing.

“Yeah, I just have to get some ammo and shit, this is my room after all,” Bam had replied.

“Well don’t take too long and no fucking. We need to get over there and put a stop to the raid,” Slither muttered before he’d walked away. Bam had shut the door, taking a step inside the room. Jamie could remember the fear that spiked through her at being shut inside that room with Bam after just being assaulted. She’d wanted to run but her legs would never have held her with the way they shook and felt weak.

“You okay?” Bam asked eyeing her carefully, his movements slow as he stepped across the room.

Jamie had nodded but she hadn’t been okay. Raised by her brother and a sweetbutt, she had never been a complete innocent and it meant that she’d known exactly what Slither had been trying to do to her. Bam was bigger than Slither, who was short for a man, and when his shadow fell on the bed she felt the gasp that escaped her as fear almost blinded her. She struggled against it, preparing to run away. Only Bam just turned and pulled something from the drawer nearby.
