. Warry, September 21, 1942. Unable to put out due to the weather, they were forced to sit up in their wet clothes with no water or lavatory in ships laden mainly with lice and fleas. In the morning they were given some coffee and bread (plus a hot meal at 10 A.M.), then told to go home and to report again on Wednesday. After “trailing down to the pier” on Wednesday, they were sent back home again. And thus the “cat and mouse game,” as Winnie called it, went on until finally new ships of better quality came on Friday and put out for Germany with the deportees aboard. Unfortunately, this time lag gave the Germans more opportunity to review their exemption lists, and a number of people who thought they were safe found themselves suddenly on their way to Germany.
