Jackson rushed to her side and flung his arms around her. She hugged him tightly. He pulled apart from her briefly, cupping her face as if he couldn’t believe his eyes. He kissed her. She gave a quiet laugh, whispered his name. He hugged her again, holding her tight against him.

No haze, no fog as Ramona walked. The sun shone brightly, warming her skin. The smell of grapes brewing into jelly escaped the open kitchen window. Ramona walked on from the house that had been her home in her youth, passing the giant oak tree that shaded the backyard.
She skipped on. A dog barked. A golden brown German Shepherd ran to greet her. Dog, she’d named it after John Wayne’s dog in a movie. She smiled at the companion of her youth. They ran around the barn and the shed, crawled through the wooden fence. They knew the way well to her escape, her haven. She held a book, her diary.
Dog ran along the bank of the lake, clearing a path for Ramona to follow. She laughed as she ran. Free, happy. Dog stopped under their hideaway, a worn spot under an old willow tree not far from the lake bed where she would sit for hours. She knelt down, hugging Dog.
A wind blew. Dark clouds formed on the horizon. She stood quickly; the wind blew harder. Flames billowed where her home stood, and her heart beat faster. The flames spread to the barn, the shed. She turned back. Dog had faded away. The fire raged, getting closer and closer. Smoke covered all around. Panic surged within her. She swung around. She had to get out of here.
Before she could move, someone grabbed her arm. She tried to jerk free. The grip tightened. The smoke began to clear. A face emerged. Her eyes focused on the figure that held her. Tall, looming over her, his dark eyes penetrated straight into hers. Terror seized her.
She stared back, straight into his eyes. “Damien.”
