“No. You’re staying.” He slipped out from under her and stood to his full height. “Tell me,” he commanded Travis.
The dirty blond handed him a note. “Guess where we found this.”
“Who left it?”
“Don’t know, but the scent is still there. I don’t like it,” said Travis. He looked at her from the corner of his eye.
The door opened again, and Evan’s large frame filled the entrance. He stood silently, listening, as if he knew something was amiss with his coworkers. She felt like an outsider, and very inappropriate just wearing a towel.
Garret turned to her. “Are you sure you have no family, Cassie? No brother who may be looking for you?”
A brother? She’d never mentioned her half brother to Garret or anyone in Climax. A few people at work in the city knew she’d been trying to find her missing family members, but that’s it. Why was he asking her now?
“I may have a half brother. But I’ve never met him.”
Travis looked at Patrick, and they both shook their heads. “It’s obviously someone else. Someone who means her harm.”
She sat up straighter, clutching her towel to her chest. “What exactly is going on? Does that note have something to do with me?”
Travis crossed his arms and paced the small space, his back to her.
“Someone was at your house last night,” explained Patrick. “They left a note saying they were looking for you. That they’d always find you.”
“I don’t know anyone who’d want to find me
or
hurt me. They must have the wrong person.”
“It was addressed to you personally.”
Evan bolted from the trailer, the door slamming back in place. “Fuck! Stop him before he does something stupid,” said Garret, running a hand through his hair. Travis took off after him.
“Well, who would do such a thing?” she asked, standing up beside Garret. He wrapped an arm around her shoulders.
“It could be a number of people. This half brother of yours, someone who knows about your inheritance, or even someone who means Gregor Mining harm.”
“What inheritance? That old shack? If some nut job wants it, they can have it.” What if her brother was looking for her as she’d looked for him? What if she was destined to be the next “missing person” in Climax? Garret hadn’t been with her last night, and Evan had left before she woke. Could either of them be playing some twisted game with her?
“You’ll stay here until we find out exactly what’s going on,” said Garret.
“She can stay at our cabin. We’ll make sure no harm comes to her.” Patrick’s willingness to protect her warmed her heart. She’d wondered if Travis or Patrick cared about her at all after their night of ménage sex.
Cassidy was glad she had an excuse to be with all four men without appearing needy. Yes, she wanted them, but only if they wanted her back. Just the thought of returning to their cozy little cabin in the woods sent a thrill through her body.
“Tell the crew to keep a lookout for strangers. And close the main gates. The drivers will have to deal with it until I know Cassie’s safe.”
Patrick headed to the door, but turned before leaving. “Don’t worry, little one, you’re in good hands.” He winked and then disappeared.
Garret’s two-way radio alerted him.
The garbled voice sounded,
“Garret, we’ve got word that one of the loggers may have found Matthew.”
“Are you sure?”
“You best come up here. The northern cut zone.”
Garret’s eyes were wild. He shoved the phone into his breast pocket and took her hands in his. “I’ve got to go, but don’t worry. You’ll be safe here until I get back.”
“That was about your missing miner, right? Is Matthew okay?”
“I was scared to ask.” He kissed her knuckles, grabbed a leather satchel from the side of the sofa and left her alone in the trailer.
She’d never met Matthew, but as Travis and the others had said, she’d be expected to include him in her bed—they did everything together, including committing to one woman. She wanted that woman to be her, but wasn’t sure if all the men were in agreement.
Cassidy hoped Garret wasn’t heading out to claim a body, or heading into a trap set by whoever was running around kidnapping and leaving creepy notes. She said a silent prayer that he’d return safely to her, along with Evan and the others. Life was certainly interesting in Climax. Cassidy only hoped she’d get her happily ever after one day and not regret her decision to take the long drive north.
