When they’d changed on the full moon, in a parody of the mating ritual Khan had bitten him hard on the neck as he pumped his seed into his ass. The wide knot that formed on Khan’s bestial cock painfully, blissfully, stretched Daniel’s channel and locked them together for ten minutes, during which time Khan raked his claws on his ass, squeezed his balls hard, and roughly jerked him off. It was the humiliating, painfully erotic, and satisfying fuck that Daniel had always craved. After that night, Khan brusquely sent him home and told him that he could be his bitch only if he secured Katherine.

“Where do you think they are going?” Khan asked with irritation lacing his words.

“It’s a good bet that they’re headed straight across the Bay. It’ll take much longer for a pursuer on this side to get there by road and there are a lot of little inlets, so it won’t be easy to track them.”

“Ah Katherine, you are so very clever,” Khan muttered to himself.

Daniel bristled that he’d never used that tone of admiration with him.

“I will intercept them. They won’t be expecting two male rogue werewolves to be working together. You have failed me again, Daniel. I think you enjoy your punishments too much.” His cold, emotionless voice sent chills to Daniel’s balls. “You won’t get anything more from me if I don’t get a female.” The phone went dead.

Daniel kicked a chair as frustration and rage shot into his heart and circulated quickly.
Damn all the silly bitches with their ridiculous tits and rank cunts.

Kil cruised slowly down a narrow street on his chopper, but all the time the enticing scent of the females became weaker like the daylight, and it was fading fast by the second. The scent of the Texas rogue, Daniel Watts, was strong and clear, although it seemed to be mingled with a horrible chemical stink that he really didn’t like. He wondered why Daniel was hanging around. It was out of character, and he’d never let Kil get this close before. He suspected that Daniel was distracted by that nasty smell.

He parked the bike and proceeded on foot, downwind of course. Before long he was standing in front of a pleasant, wooden house. The sexy aroma of the females was very faint now, moving away and mingled with the balm of the ocean. It was only just detectable but still as enticing to a male werewolf as the smell of freshly baked cookies was to a hungry dieter. They had been here, no doubt about it, but they had tried to cover their scents with a god-awful chemical of some kind. He was certain now that it kept Daniel unaware of his proximity.

He smiled, because she was good. He was a hunter of intelligent prey and couldn’t help thinking that finding Katherine Akara would be a worthy challenge culminating in a delectable prize. Crap, he’d better get thoughts like that right out of his head. The poor girl deserved a break and protection after more than twenty years of hiding and possible harassment. Like nearly every other unmated male werewolf, that scent promised him fertility, but no matter how pleasant or attractive it was, he knew, deep down, that neither woman was his true-mate.

He focused his attention on the house again. Daniel was inside and probably still unaware of him, but he would be cautious all the same. He heard a muffled crash, as if furniture were being broken.
Danny boy is not happy
. He tested the door and was amazed to find it unlocked. He restrained a sigh at such carelessness.
Shoddy attention to details will get you caught every time.
He entered and locked the door behind him with the unusually large deadbolts that he guessed the women must have added. He could hear Daniel crashing around in a room at the back of the house.

Moving quickly and silently, he located his prey and attacked. He used a hard kick to the back of Daniel’s knees to take out his legs. Daniel huffed in pain and surprise and crumpled to the floor. Kil swiftly delivered a few forceful stomps and punches to the solar plexus and groin that had him incapacitated. He took out a set of reenforced handcuffs and used them to secure Daniel’s hands behind his back. Then he dragged him by the scruff of the neck and threw him into an armchair. He wasn’t thinking about Daniel’s comfort. The armchair was sturdier than a dining chair, harder to throw or tip over, and would be trickier for Daniel to launch out of with his hands behind his back.

Daniel was groaning, but it fell on pitiless ears.

“You’ve broken the rules, Danny. You’ve killed people.” He adopted a cold, emotionless tone as he stood staring down impassively at the young Were.

“I couldn’t help it,” Daniel whined.

“Maybe once, but three times? No. You know the protocol. You should have asked for help. Why didn’t you seek help if you are so out of control?”

Daniel said nothing.

“Maybe you were thinking about something else, eh? What kept you from seeking help?”

“Nothing,” Daniel ground out between clenched teeth.

Kil growled and let a little of his beast free as he slowly prowled toward him. He was very good at intimidation.

“Wait, wait.” Daniel’s eyes nearly popped out of their sockets in panic as he pushed himself back into the chair, trying in vain to put more distance between them. “I was following the scent. I didn’t know what it was, but I wanted to follow it. I couldn’t help it,” Daniel simpered, but Kil wasn’t fooled.

“You don’t mean this foul stench, so I guess that you’re lying about not recognizing two unmated female werewolves,” he said calmly.

Daniel’s eyes darted around the room, and Kil could almost hear the gears in his brain grinding to come up with a plausible explanation.

“Yeah. I’ve been following one for months now, and then today I discovered there are two of them.”

“Tell me something I don’t know about the females, and I’ll go easy on you.” He was telling the truth, because he could kill him quickly and painlessly, or…

“I think that one of them may be Katherine Akara.”

“What do they look like?”

“Katherine’s sort of Polynesian looking, I guess. She had long, wavy black hair and sort of copper-colored skin. I ain’t seen the other one.”

Kil waited a moment for Daniel to continue, but he didn’t say anything else. He let his irritation show with his elongating teeth.

“Everyone knows that. Why are you dicking around?” His voice sounded rough with the partial change.

Daniel now stank of fear.

“She’s tall for a woman, about five ten or eleven, and looks leanly muscular, as if she doesn’t carry as much body fat as most normal women. She appears to be in her mid-twenties. I guess I’d call her a handsome woman rather than pretty.”

“Better. Now, tell me everywhere you’ve followed her.”

Daniel blurted out places and dates. The more information he gave, the more impressed Kil was with Katherine.

“Why were you following her?”

“You’ve got to be kidding me. She’s an unmated female werewolf, and now I’ve discovered there are two of them.” Daniel snorted as if Kil had asked a stupid question.

It was an act. Like spots on a tiger or stripes on a leopard—there was a pattern, but it wasn’t the right one. Why would a werewolf who screwed human men be interested in women? Daniel had never gone after females, and from what Kil had found out from his investigations it was obvious that he batted for the same side and that sex with males wasn’t just an act of domination. Although not common, homosexual werewolves were not unheard of. Most tended to be loners or rogues, on the fringes of their society. It crossed his mind that perhaps his species should move with the more enlightened times and be more accepting of such individuals. He’d talk about it with Will later, because it may reduce some of their loner and rogue problems.

He decided to take a long shot and demanded, “Who are you working for?”

“W–What?”

Oh yes, now we’re getting somewhere.

“Danny, you’re about as interested in those females as I am in flower arranging. Who wants the women?”

“I–I don’t know what you’re talking about,” he spluttered.

Kil sighed heavily, as if getting bored. “Danny, you know who I am, right? I’m the Prime Alpha’s Chief Enforcer.
Kilchil
Hunt—
Kil
Hunt—is my name, and it also happens to be what I do. I have my orders and I’m following them. I’ve hunted you, and I
am
going to kill you. You don’t have a choice in this, it is inevitable I’m afraid, but you can determine if you go painlessly—or not.”

Daniel lost control of his bladder at that point.
Tsk, a young killer with no backbone.
He sighed inwardly. Daniel was starting to blubber, and tears ran down his cheeks.

“He’ll kill me. He said he’d skin me alive.”

“Were you not listening, son? He can’t kill you because you’ll already be dead, and I can do much worse than skin you alive.” He didn’t enjoy his work, but all he had to do was close his eyes and see those three young dead men with terribly abused bodies to make it easier. “If you don’t spill your guts, figuratively speaking, you’ll be doing it literally, just like those young men who had the misfortune to meet you, only slower, much slower.”

As he hoped, Daniel began to talk, well blabber really, and what a very interesting story he had to tell. When he was sure that Daniel had nothing else to add, Kil swiftly, mercifully, administered justice with a quick twist of Daniel’s neck.

Chapter 3

Will Hawke, Prime Alpha of all the North American Packs, the most powerful and respected werewolf of this age, popped a mini custard tart into his mouth and moaned. It was comfort food, but so what, he was having a difficult day. They were petty, silly issues, molehills really, but when piled on top of one another they sure added up to a small mountain.

The Indian Prime Alpha, Ashok Khan, had taken off with the explanation that he was going sightseeing and fishing. Will wondered just what it was that he was fishing for, because Khan was about as trustworthy as a military dictator, and that about summed up his style of rule over his Packs. Khan’s delegate, the usually phlegmatic Kashmiri Alpha called Anil Kumar, was looking agitated and complaining about his accommodation and the plain food.

The African Alpha, Thokomelo Matabula, of the Congo Pack, politely expressed his discomfort about the cold, even though it was a very comfy sixty degrees inside the large log-and-stone house called The Den. It could easily drop to below freezing outside in April. He’d better ask someone to get thermal underwear for the guy.

The Russian Prime Alpha’s twin sons, who were here as his representatives for the Were Council Gathering as well as being Alphas of their own Siberian Pack, had disappeared on Ducati motorcycles and had not been seen or heard of since. Well, that wasn’t completely correct. They’d been seen and heard partying up a storm two nights ago in a bar in Wolf Point, of all places. They hadn’t thought to contact Angela, this year’s acting Council Secretary and his full-time personal assistant.

Thinking of his wonderfully competent assistant, there was another issue. The Australian Prime Alpha, Mike Evans, had discovered last week that she was his mate. Oh joy, indeed, because there went another one just when he needed her most. Good Were administrative help was hard to find because there weren’t many females, and male werewolves often didn’t have the patience for it.

Finding one’s mate was, of course, a thing to be celebrated, and he was very happy for them both, but it was bad timing for him. He hadn’t seen her for the first five days, as she’d been closeted with Mike in the cabin he’d assigned to them. They’d made an appearance two days ago, but her mind was still mush, and she sat at her desk with a distracted look on her face. After the full-moon mating she would be permanently bound to Mike, and they would be “Waltzing Matilda” off to some down-under billabong, leaving him without an assistant.

And on the matter of females and mating, it now appeared that there were not only one but two unmated female werewolves freely running around in his territory. Molehills, lots of pesky little molehills. He absently reached for another custard tart. There were still many issues to be discussed and resolved before the Were Council full-moon run in three days’ time.

Primes, Alphas, and their representatives from all over the world were here at The Den, the headquarters of the North American Packs, and where he was based with his own Montana Mountain Pack. Each of the delegates had his own agenda and, it seemed, petty complaints. Sometimes he loathed as much as loved the Were Council Gatherings and wished they were held every ten years rather than every seven.

Just when he thought that he’d had his fill of minor irritations, he had another priority call from Kil. As he listened to Kil relay Daniel’s story, he began to piece together some of the recent events. Obviously Daniel was working for Ashok Khan, trying to find Katherine Akara. The story confirmed what he already knew—Khan was as twisted as a corkscrew. He was a dangerous, devious bastard, and Will didn’t underestimate the lengths he would go to in order to get what he wanted. Daniel had obviously come close and called Khan, and that was why the Indian Prime Alpha had “gone fishing.”

The rumor was that Katherine had been pregnant when she’d disappeared from Scotland. Although he had never heard of such a thing, he suspected that the second female werewolf was Katherine’s daughter and that was why she’d tried so hard to hide in the first place. His admiration for the young Maori woman—she was only forty-six—increased. Years ago he’d seen a photograph of her, and he recalled thinking that her wide face, full lips, and broad nose looked strong yet sensual.
And I passed up the opportunity to have her
