Suddenly, Zepp's voice broke over the gathering. “Headmaster, I've received an email response from John's parents!”

“If John doesn't mind, please read it out,” Lorem said with a smile. John nodded.

“‘Dear headmaster, thank you so much for writing. We are very proud to hear of our son's achievements. It is encouraging to hear how well he is doing at your excellent school. We could not be happier with this news, and we hope you will tell him that.”

A round of applause rippled around the table. John felt a little embarrassed to be the center of attention, but also full of pride.

“Thank you, Zepp,” Lorem said. “Since John came to Hyperspace High, I have taken something of an interest in Earth literature, and I seem to remember that some wise anonymous fellow once said ‘leaders are not born, they are made.' I think John has proved that to be true today.”

Emmie nudged John, beaming. Kaal came around from the other side of the table to join them.

Just then Lorem spoke low so that only John could hear. “You might like to hear another saying I learned from your Earth writers. ‘Members of the same family do not always grow up under the same roof.'”

John put his arms around Kaal and Emmie's shoulders — the friends who, he knew, were his family out here in endless space — and grinned. “Or under the same stars.”
