“Is this going to be okay?” he asked when they pulled slightly apart. “You and me, I mean.”

Chris seemed to consider the question. “We’re gonna need a little work, maybe.” He laughed slightly. “We’re both kind of a mess.”

Dylan glanced over Chris’s shoulder, where the back of his house was visible. Paint peeling, windows uncurtained, no mud room even begun yet. But still beautiful in its own way. Good bones, and full of potential.

“Yeah,” Dylan said. “We need some renovations. But I think we’ve got a good foundation, and our structure is sound.”

Chris smiled at him. Not a half grin, but a full and toothy smile that crinkled his eyes and made him look like a delighted teenager. “All right then, Dyl. Let’s get to work.”

Acknowledgments

Many people think of writing as a solitary activity, but
Good Bones
would never have come to fruition without contributions from several wonderful people. Karen Witzke’s careful and thoughtful feedback was invaluable, but not as invaluable as her friendship. I’d also like to thank Sheree Adams, who was willing to look at my manuscript (quickly!) and who gave me the confidence to believe that my story was one that people would want to read. Amy Lane read my first (self-published) novel and suggested I consider submitting to Dreamspinner Press; her encouragement was exactly the spark I needed. Finally, I am deeply grateful to my amazingly supportive husband, who gives me the space and time I need to write, and who’s proud to tell people he’s married to an author.

About the Author

F
IELDING
is very pleased every time someone calls her eclectic. She has migrated back and forth across the western two-thirds of the United States and currently lives in California, where she long ago ran out of bookshelf space. She’s a university professor who dreams of being able to travel and write full-time. She also dreams of having two perfectly behaved children, a husband who isn’t obsessed with football, and a house that cleans itself. Some dreams are more easily obtained than others.
